I was looking for a way to dim our LED string lights and was surprised to discover none of the local home improvements stores had any dimmers rated for outdoor use. So I looked at Amazon and discovered several that appeared to do what I needed. I was using a timer to shut the lights “on” at dusk and “off” after eight hours, worked good but the lights (2 watt bulbs) were just too bright. So I was looking for something that would provide dimming and replace the timer. Several units offered preset “on” times, but the most had a maximum four hours “on”, I needed eight. Then I found this dimmer and it offered an eight hour “on”/“off” cycle so I ordered it. When I got the dimmer I was surprised at how it was packed, everything fit nicely in the small box, but no packing material was used. The remote was loose and rattled around but, thankfully, was not damaged. Good thing since you MUST use the remote to change settings. Also, no batteries were provided for the remote, but no big deal. When I went to set it up I realized there were no operator instructions included. I figured it out but not so sure about the next person. I was able to dim the lights to a nice brightness so am very happy with that, but the 2/4/6/8 hour “on”/“off” time must be started manually each time, there is no internal clock (maybe there is, but no manual to explain). To the best of my knowledge, there also isn’t a photo cell to turn on at dusk. So at this point I use the dimmer with the timer I was using (note: the dimmer must be plugged into the outlet, then the dimmer goes between timer and lights) and am satisfied. Since there were no ratings of this unit when I bought it I will chalk up the things I found to a new item and/or company so I wasn’t harsh with the rating. ... show more

Work as it should, but if lights string has plug at end for additional accessory requiring more than 10 amps sealed internal fuse will blow with no repair allowed without damaging case.

Bought this dimmer 2 years ago to conrol 2 Costco LED string lights located inside my gazebo. (The lights themselves were very bright for my liking). The dimming feature works very well controlling the brightness although I only use this feature (don't need them flashing). But, I have had a few issues with this remote unit over these 2 years.... a) - lights turn on by themselves. This rarely happens but does occur. (possibly during some thunder storms) b) - the lights no longer completely turn off. Each bulb filament glows ever so slightly when turned off. So slight that it is barely noticeable but still not completely off. This does not "fade" away over time after turning the lights off with the remote. To compensate for these slight issues, I just unplug the lights when I know I won't be using them for a several days. The dimming feature still works very well.     • Seem to work well, but a little finicky.
This is the second dimmer I purchased. The first came with no remotes and it was supposed to have two. I was able to send it back, wait, and then get one with two remotes. Annoying, but OK. The current dimmer seems to work well. The remotes are of very cheap material, but sufficient. The remote system does seem to be a little finicky lately, but it always works after hitting the button a couple of times. Hopefully, it stays that way. I am a little surprised that Amazon has so few options at 800-watts and up. A couple of large-bulb string lights daisy-chained together add up to that level fast. ... show more

I first ordered a dimmer with a 300 watt capacity. We have incandescent Edison type bulbs and that 300 watts wasn't enough. This works perfectly. Dim from 100% down to 10%. On/Off on the remote and a timer for up to 8 hours. It has some different modes that flash at different rates. Not sure that it is overly beneficial unless you want a psycho headache. ... show more
