I got this 21" Economic Soprano Ukulele Start Pack by ADM for my wife who is a musician of many sorts. This review is based on her experience using the product. Ukuleles are a string instrument made from a hollow soundboard and four strings. They look like a mini guitar. They have an hourglass base and a fingerboard neck. Often, ukulele manufacturers make the strings from stainless steel or nylon, and the instrument's tuning should be (in order) the notes of G, C, E and A. Most ukuleles have wood construction. However, musicians may find less expensive versions built from plastic. There are a variety of models including: soprano, concert, armadillo, pineapple, banjo tenor and baritone. This Ukulele is a soprano version that has a basswood body and nylon strings. As a musician my wife said that that this is quality constructed instrument. It's not top of the line mind you but it's a good solid instrument perfect for starting out and beyond. Other features of the instrument include a black neck fingerboard with sturdy brass frets (a total of 12 altogether). The frets are marked at the 5th, 7th & 10th levels. The tuners are chrome plated metal with plastic buttons and look like that of a guitar. They are just as sturdy as the rest of the instrument. This set comes with a pink holding bag, a shoulder strap that can be taken on and off, 2 picks, extra white nylon string in case a string needs to be replaced, an orange polishing cloth to keep the instrument shining and a digital tuner. They even included the battery for the tuner. The instrument is remarkably lightweight. This in combination with the nylon strings makes this instrument a good choice for children who are learning. Aside from the features there is another huge consideration that speaks of what a nice instrument this is. It's a soprano ukulele. It has the highest pitch of all of the ukulele's. It has a clear and joyful sound but has limited resonance and amplification. This is the kind of instrument that you would use in small entertainment venues and/or for personal enjoyment in the home. A few things to keep in mind in regards to this instrument. The strings need to be tightened when it arrives. You do this by turning the 4 white knobs towards you. Turning them away from you loosens the strings. Unless you have an excellent ear you WILL need to use the digital tuner. Figuring that out can be a bit of a challenge if you have never done it before so I suggest that you consult a musical store for a one on one instruction or watch a you tube video. Once you do it one time it comes naturally after that. The most tuning the instrument needs is when you first get it. After that you can pick a set frequency and just do it at the designated times. There is one thing about ukulele's in general that most certainly applies to this instrument as well. Their sound quality increases with time as they age. What it sounds like when it first arrives isn't exactly what it will sound like a few weeks or months down the road. With time the sound becomes richer. My wife just received the instrument a few days ago so she's still in the initial fine tuning stage. Right now the sound quality is lovely and she stated it was easy to play. She recommends using the picks because they help protect the skin on the fingers from irritation. The only improvement that my wife could suggest was the carrying case. She felt that if the case were firmer that it would protect the instrument better from damage. This is truly a beautiful instrument. It comes in a variety of colors. My wife's is pink. The price is affordable. It would be a wonderful gift for child or adult alike. My wife specifically mentioned that this would be perfect to use in schools during music class. Usable by musicians of ALL levels. It really provides so much for such a small instrument! My wife saw Tiny Tim sing "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" while playing the ukulele as a child. The ukulele comes already strung so it is ready to be explored upon opening. The strings are lightweight plastic material and are loose, so tuning is required. Thanks to the included digital tuner this is not a large chore. The tuner includes a battery that is loose in the small box it comes in, so that was another plus. The finish is essentially intact and not bearing any major flaws that might be a deal breaker, but it does have that "you get what you pay for" quality to it, but that could be attributed to the quality of wood versus craftmanship, but I am not an experienced musician or craftsman. The sound is much like I would expect, but again, I am not an experienced musician. It does a fair job. The quality makes me believe it is meant for light use or practice. Not performing professionally. The case it comes with opens across the bottom so you have to slide it over the instrument opposed to unzipping and setting inside and zipping shut. The strap on the case is not meant for adult shoulders. It is just a strap to hold onto. A child could probably wear it on their shoulder to carry if they were small enough. The instrument is really lightweight. There is one negative comment I must mention and that is the smell of the product. I opened the box and could detect a chemical-like packaging smell. It wasn't overpowering in an open room, but I had to bring it in my car and with the windows rolled up I began to get a headache from it. I suspect that it is mostly from the carrying case and I would separate them and let them air out before giving to children right away. I don't know if it is truly harmful, but getting a headache after a 10 minute drive didn't inspire much confidence. After mine airs out for a couple days I will be happier. The smell is what reduces this item from a 5 star to a 4. ... show more

This ukulele is perfect for beginners, both children and adults! This soprano sized ukulele comes package nicely, in a super duty cardboard box, so it arrives in perfect condition. This kit includes everything you will need to get started, plus a few extra things, including: One soprano ukulele, neck strap, 2 picks, electronic tuner, polishing cloth, and ukulele bag. Upon receiving your ukulele, plan on spending around 5-10 minutes adjusting the strings, and tuning it. New ukuleles don't hold their tune very well for the first few weeks as they need to adjust to the temperature, humidity, and stretching....so plan on tuning it before playing it every time. You also have an electronic tuner, with battery included to help you find the correct notes on each string. The strings were loose as they came, but now that it is properly tuned, they feel great, and this ukulele is sounding great! Beginners will appreciate the picks, so their fingers don't get worn out from practice. I have really enjoyed playing around on this cute little ukulele, and think it's a great kit for the awesome price. The paint job is really smooth, shiny, and looks awesome. The sounds is good to for an inexpensive ukulele. Tuners are usually an extra ten dollars or so, so considering all the pieces of this kit, this is a great deal. Also included are a few extra strings, in case you have one break. But I haven't, so that's a good sign! Ukuleles are fun for children, and adults, so anyone will love this classic instrument! I did receive this product at a discount or free for an honest evaluation, however that hasn't influenced my thoughts.     • Whynew ukuleles need frequent tuning at first.
This is a wonderful ukulele. It is important to know that ukulele strings, like guitar strings, need to be gently broken in when a new ukulele is played at first. A new ukulele will need to be tuned very frequently. This is normal. Once the strings are gently stretched, tuning will be needed less frequently.     • Good For Starters-- At a Cost
An amazing instrument for the price-- at least, with the sale present. The tuner is excellent and helped me realize I was more flat than normal. While I have perfect pitch, because of a badly tuned piano I sometimes fall flat in noting. Using the tuner and my ear, however, I've noticed that some of my chords and notes can be off-- the C note when played on the A string is sharper than it should be, as is the A note played on the G string. While this would and shouldn't be a huge deal to a beginner just learning, it admittedly is something that can be quite distressing if you, like me, are much more inclined to notice such a thing. It sometimes leaves some of the chords sounding slightly muddied and not quite as pretty. Had it been the full 70$ price tag, I would certainly have a lot more complaints. This may be simply a fault of my own individual ukulele and not the entirety of the brand, but this may be something to consider. I would absolutely not have bought this product at its quality, let alone be praising it, had it been at the full 70$ price tag. While it is a good starting instrument as I've addressed, you should not invest that much money unless you're very serious about trying to learn or are willing to get a professional, near-perfectly tuned instrument. As a roughly 30$ investment however? Absolutely worth giving it a shot to see if it interests you. The strap for the ukulele is admittedly almost useless-- it doesn't keep the instrument secure for me at all, nor does it provide any form of rest-- if anything it simply feels like a failed accessory that gets in the way. The picks are nice and give off a good sound when used, which are helpful. I personally don't plan to use the stickers but I do appreciate them being included, as for a beginning that can be very useful, as is the twelve basic chords chart. I would consider paying more for such a product in the future if kinks like the messy tuning were to be ironed out and fixed. i bought this as a gift for my friend and she loved it. it's her first ukulele. this isn't a top of the line ukulele, but it is still very good. i believe it was worth the money. the glossy black color was nice, but it had a tiny dent in the paint. that's just a detail i noticed- my friend was very happy with it and that's what matters. the strings come barely on the uke so you have to tune them in order to tighten them up. it took forever trying to tune with the tuner so i just did it by ear. the tuner works better when the strings are already near their correct notes. this was the first thing i have ever bought on amazon, and i was scared i was going to find some major defect and have to return it. instead, i was very pleased with the product that was delivered. i would recommend this as a gift or for anyone who is just learning to play! i will include a video of me comparing the sound to my mahogany makala uke. keep in mind that both ukes weren't fully in tune lol ... show more

UPDATE: 1 star I've changed my rating. After several months of trying to learn ukulele I noticed that the way the frets are positioned are not where they should be, no matter how many times you tune it you will not be able to play chords that sound good and are in tune consistently. I cannot figure out a way to make it sound good. It is a toy not an instrument. When I first received: 3 stars Here’s what I think is worth mentioning. Pros: • Very nice color (I got blue), lighter than pictured but I actually like it better • Truly everything a beginner needs, the fret stickers are a cool concept that I imagine will make learning tabbed songs and whatnot much easier. • Tuner has the typical chromatic setting, but also has presets for standard tuning of not only ukelele but guitar, bass and violin too. Cons: • Tuner is *very* slow, makes it more difficult to get in tune quickly when you have to wait for the tuner to process each little tone change. Perhaps it just needs new batteries and will be an easy fix. • Very cheaply made, the paint intended for the body of the guitar is clumsily dripped on the fretboard. Also the fretboard has considerable but not too major scratches that were there as soon and I opened the box. The circles around the sound hole and the ADM are faded and inconsistent color. I will include pictures of this. Neutral: • There are no pegs for the strap, so the strap clips onto the sound hole. If you’re a woman you may have an issue with the length of the strap and the way it needs to be positioned around your chest, it lays awkwardly and the strap is just a tad too short. • Arrived about a week and a half late, but this could be Amazon’s fault, not ADM’s fault. Not a big deal anyways unless you’re trying to get in in time for Christmas or something like that. • It was strung very poorly, but strings are elastic and seem durable so I don’t even think I’ll have to use the extra set to restring it. ... show more
