The media could not be loaded. This yarn winder is just what I needed to make my fiber arts processes more efficient. As a spinner, knitter and weaver, I manage a lot of yarn, and this tool greatly reduces the time it takes me to wind balls of yarn. There are several things I love about this: - Its large size allows me to wind non-standard skeins of yarn such as art yarns and bulky yarns. It is possible to wind up to a pound of yarn at a time! - It is sturdy. Being made primarily of metal with a plastic cone and nylon or delrin gears, this machine will stand the rest of time and wind miles of yarn. -It is portable. Even though it is fairly large, this can be easily moved. The adjustable clamp allows me to place this on many different surfaces from tables to loom beams to work benches to television trays. -It is very fast! I can wind several hundred yards of yarn in less than a minute. -This is easy to use. Even my five-year-old loves winding yarn for me. -Its is quiet. Unlike motorized winders, this is very quiet, so I won't wake up the house if I want to work late at night. -It creates perfectly wound, center-pull balls. I really enjoy working with yarn wound on this machine because there are no tangles, so I can enjoy crafting rather than spending time unravelling yarn messes. The only thing I don't like about this is that the arm that holds the yarn was slightly bent, which caused the arm that rotates around the cone to clank against it. After bending it in the opposite direction, the problem was solved. Overall, this machine is everything I would hope for on a yarn winder. I'm impressed with it and would recommend it to any knitter, spinner or crochet artist.

This large yarn winder works well, is sturdy, made of metal and thick plastic gears and, holds securely to the table with nonskid and cushioning pads. I think it will last over a long time. It is easy to put together with the enclosed instructions. I did have to gently bend the yarn carrier arm down slightly, to have it lay flatly on the table as per the instructions. The winding arm spins very loosely, easily and, very fast in clockwise or counterclockwise direction. If you let go of the handle, the winding arm will flop downward which, I don't like. You have to control the tension of the wound ball with your hand as it takes up the yarn or, use it with your own yarn swift as, per the instructions. If you are used to crochet, you understand tension and, you can feel how to hold the yarn as it spins. If you have to stop to get a knot out of your yarn while winding, you have to remember to continue winding in the same direction or the yarn may tangle, go underneath the spool and get wound up underneath. It is a bit aggravating and awkward to undo this if that happens. I had to take the spool off and reattach it after untangling. At times, the yarn came unthreaded, out of the yarn loop closest to the yarn ball and, I had a difficult time getting it back into the loop without it coming undone again. It does make a moderate whiring sound as it operates but, not too bad. I was able to wind about 8 oz of size 4 worsted weight yarn before it started winding off the cone, from too much yarn. More frequent use and experience with this yarn winder will make it easier to use.

This yarn winder is easy to assemble and disassemble for storage, despite the small photos that accompany the directions. The winder is hand driven, not electric, which is beneficial because it doesn’t have to be used near an outlet and/or use batteries. It attaches to a table easily, but the table needs to be sturdy because a wobbly table will affect the winding. This winds the yarn into a “cake”quickly and easily. It took about 1/3 to 1/2 the time to wind a full pull-skein of yarn as it does to wind by hand. I wound a pull skein into a ball by hand just a few days before trying the winder. On that note, this winder can be used to wind yarn from a hank/skein, a pull-skein or a ball. There is a bit of a learning curve: yarn can tangle a bit in the winder if wound too quickly, but can easily be rectified. I would highly recommend this yarn winder. There are so many pluses that outweigh the few negatives. Winding yarn into a cake, with the yarn pulling out from the center, makes storing easier because the cakes can stack on top of each other. The cake also prevents the yarn from “jumping” out of whatever container they may be in while knitting or crocheting. The end of the yarn in the center is always easily accessible. Anyone who’s used a pull skein has had the experience, at least once, of not being able to find the end of the yarn in the center of the skein.

I’m thrilled with this yarn winder! I have another one that’s almost identical (except it’s blue) that I use frequently, and this one is just as great. The turn handle on this one is a bit shorter, which I appreciate because it takes up less space when attached to my table. I was particularly excited about the purple color. It’s easy to set up, works well, and effortlessly cakes large yarn without any issues. It can hold two 6-ounce skeins without a problem, so you can use it for almost any yarn. It also works great with small 3-ounce skeins. It is metal so weighs more than smaller winders, but I find that to be a good thing. It’s a bit less expensive than similar large capacity yarn spinners, but it’s made just as well as the one I paid almost twice this price for. As a heavy duty spinner, I expect it to perform well and last practically forever. My daughter is getting my other one, and I’m keeping this purple one! Update: I had some super heavy (finger knitting weight) bulky yarn and wondered if this would cake it. It did with a little bit of effort, it was too thick to go through both feeding loops, but it went through the wrapping arm and I held the end for tension. It caked up nicely. I used a regular 16.9 oz bottle of water for scale. This is a big cake! It easily handles normal sized yarns.
