This yarn winder is easy to assemble and disassemble for storage, despite the small photos that accompany the directions. The winder is hand driven, not electric, which is beneficial because it doesn’t have to be used near an outlet and/or use batteries. It attaches to a table easily, but the table needs to be sturdy because a wobbly table will affect the winding. This winds the yarn into a “cake”quickly and easily. It took about 1/3 to 1/2 the time to wind a full pull-skein of yarn as it does to wind by hand. I wound a pull skein into a ball by hand just a few days before trying the winder. On that note, this winder can be used to wind yarn from a hank/skein, a pull-skein or a ball. There is a bit of a learning curve: yarn can tangle a bit in the winder if wound too quickly, but can easily be rectified. I would highly recommend this yarn winder. There are so many pluses that outweigh the few negatives. Winding yarn into a cake, with the yarn pulling out from the center, makes storing easier because the cakes can stack on top of each other. The cake also prevents the yarn from “jumping” out of whatever container they may be in while knitting or crocheting. The end of the yarn in the center is always easily accessible. Anyone who’s used a pull skein has had the experience, at least once, of not being able to find the end of the yarn in the center of the skein.

I have a huge yarn collection for my crochet projects and prefer to wind my skeins into cakes for a clean center pull when working on a project. I have another yarn winder from a well known brand that costs more than twice what this one is so I am very familiar with the workings of a yarn winder. This one was simple to assemble the bobbin and yarn arm and very simple to attach it to my table top. Honestly this winder looks so much like my more expensive winder they are very similar side by side. Where they differ is performance. The mechanism is fairly smooth but is a bit noisy and a little more effort to turn and I don’t care for the handle which has a ridge in the center of the plastic handle which irritated my thumb on the third skein of yarn. This winder will accommodate a large skein of yarn up to 16 oz. which is great and works relatively smoothly but I found the cakes were not as tight or neat as those using my much more expensive Stanwood winder. However, if you are on a budget and want a nice yarn winder this one works very well and does what it says. The first photo shows two cakes I made with this winder and the second photo has a cake on the left using the exact same yarn made with my more expensive winder. It’s not a deal breaker and for someone just starting out in yarns crafts this would make a good purchase or gift for the price point.

I love this yarn winder! In no time at all, I had wound the yarn into a perfect yarn cake with the center pull. The winder is super easy to operate. Simply thread the yarn through the two eyes and insert the end of the yarn into the slits on the bobbin and start turning the handle. It is heavy duty and fastens securely onto a table top or shelf. It feels very sturdy and reliable and did an excellent job of winding the yarn neatly and securely. This is a good value yarn winder and is easy to store with my other yarn supplies.

This is big and heavy duty. I definitely have faith in it doing its job and lasting forever. But does it have to be so clunky and take up so much space? The parts that stick out most are attached with nuts and bolts. If they had been wingnuts, or if the set had come with one of those little sheet metal wrenches you get with ikea furniture, then the whole thing could be much more compact, for both shipping and storing.

I prefer working from a yarn cake when crocheting. The chance of yarn becoming tangled is greatly decreased when a skein is rewound into a cake. This style of winder can easily handle a medium-sized skein of yarn. For some of the chunky yarns, results may vary. I have a similar winder that I’ve used for 15+ years. The materials used to make this winder appear to be nice and durable. This should last for many years to come. I didn’t have a large skein to wind for picture purposes, but there’s plenty of room for a large skein.

I am in love with the lavender color this is!!! It is so cute 😍 and it's such a useful thing. I used my yarn ball winder pretty much everyday. It's easy to use and easy to set up or take down. It holds almost all the different type of yarn I use. It's a decent value for the money.
