This is definitely going to to take some time for me to master...so I definitely recommend reading the instructions as you're not just going to take it out of the box and start using it. The biggest thing is switching scan modes...even little things like making sure you switch to pinpoint mode wouldn't be intuitive without reading the manual. With that said, this will be part 1 of a 2 part review. I've tried it 2x and so far it's been touch to use on the beach. I figured I needed to mess with the settings, but I pulled out a coin and buried it to help with testing. PINPOINT mode is 100% needed. Even with that, it got me in the general vicinity (several inches) from the coin. So I think I need to mess with the sensitivity. I do think if it's set to it's most sensitive setting you have to think about what you're wearing and I definitely think it can get interference from your cell phone in your pocket. So more testing is needed for sure!

The ABLEGRID Metal Detector kit is a good entry level way to get started in the detector hobby. This is not a toy nor is it a highly sophisticated unit but a detector that offers a surprising level of control and ability at the price point. I've only been a casual detectorist for many years and do not claim any level of expertise but I have had fun using my old Bounty Hunter unit to find trinkets, a few jewelry pieces and the occasional property iron. I've wanted to get a newer digital unit for some time and when this set became available thought I'd give it a try. The kit is of reasonable build quality, not great but again at the price OK. It's comfortable enough to hold, being lightweight and length adjustable. The coil is a good size, offering a fair coverage area. I'm not super impressed with the screw knobs, wish they were of more durable plastic. The entrenching tool is sturdy and folds nicely for storage in the included holster. The case and holsters are of medium grade nylon, good enough. Headphones are what you'd expect, cheap low fidelity ones but given all you're listening to are beeps, adequate. Pretty much everything to get started, minus a sifter scoop, is included. I charged the unit with a USB charger (not included) and started testing. The detector is setup for Discrimination, Notch , Memory and Pinpoint modes. I mostly use Discrimination and was impressed by this device's filtering capability. It can be set to exclude different metals. One test I did was to place a copper penny on a hardwood floor which has many nails embedded. With iron excluded I was able to consistently pick up the penny tone and icon without interference. Without the filter the tone was constant for iron and I could barely get a copper icon flash. Not having a beach nearby I took a variety of objects to the yard and buried them at a 6" depth one foot apart. The detector correctly identified most of the coins but had a little trouble with the cheap mystery metal ring. Could very well have been my being out of practice as it does take some time to get the coil movement down to be consistent. The unit features variable sensitivity settings, which again with practice will help get optimal discoveries in different types of soils and depths. The display is large and contrasting enough to view in all but direct sunlight. A backlight mode is switchable. Speaker volume is pretty good but it's best to use headphones as once one gets familial with the tones that'll be the quick method used to quickly scan an area then check the display for approximate depth. I do wish the panel could have been adjustable to angle towards the user. It's a bit awkward to have to contort a bit to view the screen. It's typical for a lower cost unit but I think it would have been fairly easy to design and build an adjustable one. Another interesting mode is Pinpoint. With this engaged it's not necessary to sweep the coil but to home in on a more exact location of an object once picked up by wide search. The kit includes a better than average user manual which describes the fundamentals in a clear manner. All in all I like this ABLEGRID set and while not a notable name brand I think it would satisfy an adult or child's curiosity about treasure hunting with a metal detector without spending the fortune before it being found.

This was able to detect and discern between the different metal samples I tested quite well. The detector recharges via USB-C, so no fumbling around with loose batteries. It would be easy to carry a USB powerbank in the field for extra life. The instructions were a bit awkward, and I had to rely a bit more on my intuition and product picture to assemble. Once assembled, it is quite easy to use, and I would think a beginner would manage through OK. The included folding shovel and weather cover are also handy inclusions.

I have a metal detector and my kids want to get involved, This is a great starter detector for the kids and a friend. Works almost as good as my high dollar. Batteries seem to last even longer than mine.
