I’m always thrilled to learn of a new addition to the Bruno series, it’s long been a favorite of mine, this latest addition didn’t disappoint. Martin Walker has created a wonderful community full of characters who like all of us have their challenges. As Bruno works to solve a murder he is also working to save his village from economic and social demise, and working on his own relationships as he learns he sometimes needs to have a more thoughtful approach. This book marks a return to a local case that doesn’t involve international plots, as such it was quieter, but the lack of action was more than made up for in the ways. Bruno was examining his actions and developing a relationship as second in to the investigation to a new character, Fabien, instead of being the lead, and exploring a new romance. As always the descriptions of Bruno’s home life and cooking drew me in, who wouldn’t love to throw together a simple dinner for friends with greens from the local market, eggs from his chickens, and the piece of. black truffle his wonderful basset hound found! Don’t pick up this book hungry as you’re going to be torn between not wanting to put it down and needing to fix yourself a snack, preferably a French cheese. I’m already looking forward to seeing where the next book takes us with Fabien and Laura now welcomed into Bruno’s circle of friends, and will there be puppies? This wonderful series combines an intelligent, thoughtful officer, his interesting group of coworkers and friends, a stunning location filled with history, and mouthwatering food descriptions, and again, dogs. If this is the first of the series you’ve read please do yourself a favor and read all of the earlier books. I've been reading the adventures of Bruno, Chief of Police since I happened upon the debut novel in 2009. This series never disappoints. The reader is transported to the Perigord region of France, with a supporting cast of colorful local characters and places. Per usual, there is a murder to solve. This time, the location of the victim hits close, at his friend/ former lover Pamela's house and rental property. The introduction of a new police inspector added to the storyline as interconnecting relationships were told through an outside lens. I really liked the fact that this book delved more into Bruno's private life outside his duties as well as his personal dynamics with other characters. When trying to bolster the future of his village, he makes mistakes, is made aware of them, then corrects them. As usual in this series, the descriptions of the region's cuisine invoke jealousy for this foodie/oenophile. A worthy addition to an enjoyable franchise!! ... show more

This is not your typical Bruno novel. There is much too much about preparing meals and eating them. There is too much about regional politics and the economic situation in the town. These themes are in the forefront. The mystery, the reason we bought the book, is almost an afterthought.     • Will the path of true love ever be smooth for Bruno?

I distinctly remember complaining in my last review of a Bruno Chief of Police mystery that the books had been focusing on the investigations and had very little to do with the food and camaraderie that are two of the reasons why I enjoy this series so much. Well, A Murder in Springtime fixes that. Although the mystery concerning the woman who was killed is an interesting one, for the most part, it remains in the background so the focus can shift to the preparation of delicious food and sharing it with friends. This made me happy because, since the very first book, the characters have become part of my literary family. Another focal point that I liked was Bruno's attempt to revitalize his small village of St. Denis. Neighboring towns have stolen away many shoppers and tourists, and St. Denis' markets, shops, and business owners are suffering. Bruno comes up with some very good ideas, but human nature tells us that not everyone is going to be on Bruno's side. Speaking of characters, I hope this is the first of many appearances for Fabien Panton, the man sent to St. Denis to investigate the murder. He's quite the personality and fits in well with the others. Here I am, all caught up again and waiting for Bruno's next case. If you want to be transported to southwestern France, pick up these books. They are so filled with Gallic charm that I read them with a French accent. I felt short changed on both the “crime aspect” and the food.The meals featured in past novels( and there were more than one) was such an insight into how the love of good food was integral to the characters and to the town. I usually love Bruno and the cast of characters but in this book Martin strayed too far away from the characters we are use to. The Baron was hardly mentioned along with Fabiola. The detective work was boring.
