  • Just too good, if you have 20v Max Dewalt Batteries
Okay, the downide first. Without a battery, it probably is a bit pricey. That being said, it is a well designed and good cutting saw. I've reviewed quite a few of these mini chainsaws. Most of them worked okay, if you only had occasional use. The worst, or biggest hassle were the ones that gave you a little bottle to manually oil the chain. First, getting oil in the small bottles is nearly impossible and then, using the saw, the bottle emptied quick. They give you a little bottle with this saw but that hit the trash immediately. The saw has a decent sized well built in and, with an appropritely sized funnel, I was able to pour to the top of the funnel, let it drain into the tank and fill it a second time and the saw was filled. I forgot to check the amps on the battery when I was out there but it's the size they sell with the dewalt reciprocating saw, probably 3.5 or 4.0 Ahr. I trimmed a couple 3" limbs off and cut down 5 young trees from about 2" to 6" in diameter. They were all in the 10 to 15' height. I then trimmed off the limbs and cut the rest of the trees into 15 to 17" sections. When I was done, I still had full charge indicated on the battery and half the oil remained in the well. I had one test that I couldn't complete. My neighbor has a dead limb that we've talked about taking down before it falls at the wrong time. He was at work but I was going to attempt it myself. The extending of the pole is a bit of a challenge at first. Warning on the pole was well put, "Watch you Hands". The pole seems to be spring loaded to bring it back to its smallest size. I held the section firmly extending and retracting it. You'l;l also find that the pole locks need adjustment to hold the extended pole securely before use. I had to abandon the idea of taking the 6" or so limb down as I didn't feel safe standing on the ground and my nearly 78 year old body wasn't stable on the rocks that got me closer to the tree. I decided to let the young guy handle it this weekend. When you're dealing with overhead stuff, particularly with some weight, wear a hard hat. As far as the actual cutting, this saw was a champ, like cutting butter out of the box. On the ad, they say it's 550 horsepower. I don't know how that's calculated but it is, by far, the best curring mini saw I ever used. I started cutting the larger trunks with a 10" Bauer saw when I realized the process was rather slow so I went with the mini saw, never went back to the Bauer. ... show more

  • Nice set, overpriced.
I actually like this non-pole/pole based chainsaw package. I would have loved it, if it came with it's own batteries & charger though - I did know this prior to ordering. As such, I cannot deduct any stars due to the fact that the battery situation is clearly referenced in the description. The description & title states that this item is "...Compatible with DeWalt Battery 20v...". Also in the description bullet points it states "...Insert your own battery to complete trimming tasks quickly and efficiently..." Here are the things I like about this set. First, this set comes with both six and eight inch bars & chains. This is really nice when the saw is out on the end of the extended pole. That extra two inches and chain do make a lot of difference when you are trying to maneuver the saw from limb to limb. Obviously, you can only do this on limbs around 5" or lower in diameter, unless you can cut from both sides, which I've found is quite rare. Changing from one size to the other is as simple as removing the bar nuts and bar/chain and replacing the bar/chain, bar nuts and adjusting the chain tension - probably not more than a 5 - 10 minute operation even for novices. I also like that the pole can be extended out to all but 10'. I'm a bit over 6' so this means I can easily trim at 15' with the pole still at about shoulder height. The tool-free chain tightener is one if the few I've seen that actually works as well as stated. Finally, I like that it has an automatic oiler. One small caveat, when you stand directly below the pole saw, watch for dripping oil from this oiler - ask me how I know 😂🤣😁 - consider wearing glasses or a shield. Yes, I know, you should always use your ppe when using any chainsaw. So don't do like me, wear your ppe! 🤣😎 During the first use of this, I noticed that beside getting oil dripped on me (see above), that the torque/power of this was actually quite good. I dont think I should compare it with other 18 - 20 volt full size chainsaws I have, but for a small pole saw I believe it was quite good. I was able to easily go through several 3-5" limbs from both softwood (pine) and hardwoods (white oak, hickory & walnut). Overall, I was impressed with how this worked. Btw, if I had any other auto-oiler above my head, I'd also probably have oil drip on me, so this is Not an isolated issue. When I first inspected this item I didn't find any major issues or defects that would render this inoperable. At this price point (~$160), this appears to be on the high side compared to other competitors. A quick search shows similar items costing between ~$131 - 160; however the other seller at $160 currently has a $20 off coupon available making the current price of this set very high and the value not so great. Would I order this again? Probably Not, at this price. Hope this helps! ... show more
