Would highly recommend if using under a fire pit. Extra protection is always recommended for surfaces under pit. We used on a concrete slab and it seems to help extinguish the stray embers. Always feel better to add any extra protection. Seems to work great.

We purchased a portable fire pit for our new home and didn’t have a way to use it on our deck without putting our deck in harms way. We wanted to have something that could withstand a few floating embers and some heat from the fire pit and we got this - and so far it has been just what we needed. I don’t know if I could call this fireproof, but having something sit on it for 20 seconds while burning and not seeing damage or seeing the mat catch fire was a pretty strong endorsement of its strength. This sits with enough of a ring around my fire pit that I don’t feel worried using my fire pit with proper precautions. It is very lightweight and the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 stars. As the pictures show, it is also waterproof and keeps from absorbing anything. Love this mat. Fits my outdoor metal fire pit perfectly. I put it on my yard where I want to set the fire pit up and it protects then grass and anything else flammable from burning. I also sometimes use it on my deck when I light up the fire in my chiminea and it works just as well for that. It’s light weight enough to make moving it and resetting it wherever a breeze, but heavy enough that it doesn’t blow around easily or have the edges lift up and down when the wind is going. It’s a great product and I think it works well. Definitely makes me feel more safe when using my fire pits and protects my surfaces from scalding or burning. Recommend ... show more

Paper thin, maybe 2-layers but looks like only one with a stitched border making it look thicker than it is. Doesn't look like the pictures and certainly the image showing 3-layers is deceptive.
