Clear, easy-to-drive full-range drivers for a small DIY speaker build

I had an old pair of small bookshelf speakers with blown drivers and a little amplifier board sitting in a drawer, so this TANVSO 2-pack was a perfect excuse for a weekend DIY project. They're 3-inch full-range drivers rated at 4 ohms and 20 watts. That's a good match for the small class-D amp boards that are popular for DIY builds, and they're easy to drive without needing a big amplifier. Being full range, they cover the whole sound range in a single driver, with no separate tweeter or crossover to wire up. That keeps a small build simple: two wires per speaker and you're done. The terminals are clearly marked for polarity, the frames have mounting holes that lined up with the old cutouts in my boxes, and the drivers seated flush with just a bit of foam gasket. Once they were wired to the amp, the sound was clear and well balanced for their size. Voices and podcasts are crisp and easy to understand, acoustic music and guitar sound natural, and the highs are present without being harsh. A 3-inch driver isn't going to deliver deep bass, but in a sealed box the low end is fuller than I expected, and at desk or kitchen listening volume they never sounded strained or distorted. An excellent full range driver for DIY

These speakers sound great in a stereo configuration or bridged as single MONO speakers. You'll have to watch what receivers you set these up with because 4ohm is rather low and apparently that means that a receiver has to work harder somehow to use these, which translates into more heat. The flipside is that these may show their volume at lower knob levels. It is rather complicated and I don't understand it fully so do your homework before setting up your DIY speakers, or even 3" speaker replacements. I found the quality of these to be absolutely crystal clear in the upper frequencies: brass, guitar, vocals, and higher pitches that I only thought were possible with a tweeter. The ability to represent lower frequencies may be more obtainable with a ported box, but you lose the tight punchiness that an enclosed box can give. If you are able, try to setup a crossover to separate the upper and lower ranges with an additional larger woofer 6-10"+. I plan on integrating these with a 10" woofer to see if I can maximize my stereo audio experience.

Matching 3-inch drivers for a pair of desk speakers

I built two small speaker boxes from scrap plywood and mounted one of the 3-inch full range drivers in each for my workbench. Both drivers fit the 77 mm cutouts I traced, and I wired them to a small 4 ohm amplifier I already had on the shelf. My first cutout came out a hair too small, so I spent an extra half hour with sandpaper paying for my refusal to measure twice. Once both were in, podcast voices came through clear, and music had a balanced sound at desk volume with no rattle from the cones. Because the drivers match, the left and right boxes sounded the same when I played a stereo track. The cones sit evenly inside their frames, and the terminals are firmly attached with each frame resting flat against the baffle once screwed down. They turned a weekend pile of scrap wood into a working pair of speakers for the bench.

Not bad for the price

I received a pair of 3 inch 4 Ohm speakers for review. I have not had a chance to install them in a proper tuned enclosure; but I did hook them up to an amp and got clear sound out of them, and there was a little bit of low end potential, so we'll see how well they deliver on the "full range" claim. Considering the low price, these aren't bad at all for a cheap DIY project. I have the amp, BT receiver and battery pack ready to go; I just need to cut out some boxes and wire them up. If nothing else, it will be a fun time.
