Directions: Instructions Pour Zoo Med’s Eco Earth into the enclosure to the desired depth. For burrowing tortoises, terrestrial turtles and toads we recommend a depth 1.5 to 2 time the height of your animal. If your tortoise is 4” tall, you would add 6” of eco earth. This provides your reptiles/amphibians with enough substrate material to create natural burrows or “microclimates” which is critical to the health of many humidity loving reptiles and amphibians. Cork Bark pieces are an excellent decorative element to add on top of your Eco Earth substrate and function as roofs for microclimate caves. Maintenance Mist your Eco Earth daily to achieve the desired humidity level in your enclosure. Check your humidity gauge to confirm that you have the correct humidity level for the species you are keeping. It helps to partially cover the top of your terrarium with glass to increase humidity levels. Cleaning Spot clean as needed. If a foul odor persists then remove all Eco Earth and replace. Changing all of your animals in your enclosure but we recommend changing 100% every 6 months at minimum.

  • Better than the brick.
Style: 24 quart
I wasn't expecting such a large bag, I'm 5'4" and it comes up to my knee. I bought this for my leopard gecko's 10gl tank. I only used about a 1/4 of this bag. All you have to do is put a little in then mist it with water then put a little more in and mist. It works very well. My leo loves to dig in this stuff, and I did a safety test to see if it would expand or break down in water and it did like I'd hoped and broke down. (This is so my leo doesn't get impacted) When I run out I will definitely be coming back and ordering more. Very pleased. I'm not being paid to say my review, or anything of the sort, this is my honest opinion and I'm quite the critic (if anything is wrong with my purchase I do bring it up in the product review to let others know my experience) ... show more

  • Great substrate for purple pincher land hermit crabs
Style: 24 quart
I have been using this substrate for 6 years for my 6 hermit crabs. They seem to be content. At times I've mixed it with some Flukers sand but overall mostly this substrate. It is important to keep humidity levels around 60-70% so that the hermit crabs can breathe as they have "modified gils" and need humidity to breath. Make sure to use heating pads on the tank and regulate the temperature to around 75 degrees or only a few degrees less or more. Mine prefer a little warmer. I also order specialty food on ETSY because the stuff over the counter at pet stores is crap. My hermit crabs are healthy and thriving. It's extremely important to have deep substrate as the crabs burrow and molt. They will also need larger shells as they grow. NEVER use painted shells. And i don't even recommend buying them as they are a ton of work. Needless to say they are well cared for by me. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because sometimes gnats appear. Some may say it's from the substrate but i never see the gnats in winter. soooo I don't know. ... show more

  • Two days in and mite infestation began.
Style: 24 quart
Was nice substrate, but two days in and suddenly my python has mites. It's unfortunate, but I can't even use the remainder of the substrate now and have to purchase additional items to wipe them out. Seems to be a hit or miss, I went with the purchase ignoring others stating they wound up with mites as well and now have them. ... show more

  • Perfect, aesthetically-pleasing substrate
Style: 24 quart
Worked wonders for my baby ball python in her 250-gallon tank I built. I used two bags of this and it completely and thickly covered the entire bottom. I wanted something softer for her as she is very active and this was the perfect item. It also shows off her colors well as it is dark and is much more visually appealing in my tank than cypress mulch. I have a reptile humidifier to keep the humidity up and this bedding traps the humidity while maintaining a pleasant smell and remaining pliable even a few months later. The only con to this is that I can no longer feed her in her tank because it sticks to the rats and I don't want to have her eating it. ... show more

  • Wow!
Style: Size: 8 q (8.8 L) Loose
I never thought I'd leave reviews for lizard bedding, but this stuff is amazing. We had tried several kinds of bedding for our leopard geckos, and this one is hands-down my favorite. I didn't think we would like it at first, because the geckos seemed to HATE it the first few days. They were playing "the floor is lava", jumping from one rock to the next, anything to not touch the "weird new floor". But, after they got use to it, they love it! It's soft and cuddly for their little den, it goes FOREVER without smelling (unlike other beddings that smell horribly and swiftly), and it's really light and easy to clean out. If you give worms, this bedding is much easier for warms to dig through and get away, but I see that as a benefit. It's good for animals to have to work a little for their live food. ... show more

  • May work for some but did not for me
Style: 24 quart
*RETURNED* I ordered this with the intention to use in the moist hide for my leopard geckos. It gets all over and since geckos lick everything and I mean everything he licked it to much which ended up causing him impaction. I immediately returned it and am now using a better moist hide substrate which has been working great! May work for some, but definitely did not work for my needs. I bought sphagnum moss instead ... show more

  • Great substrate for Russian Tortoise
Style: Size: 8 q (8.8 L) Loose
Use - We use this as substrate for a Russian Tortoise. The substrate is fine but not so fine that it releases dust in the room or that it tends to trap in our tortoises shell. Compared to coconut fiber blocks that one needs to hydrate, this is much finer and of higher quality and requires much less effort. We use this in combination with sand and our tortoise appears to enjoy it. Due to its fine nature, it is hard for the tortoise to use it to nest in. We add some sphagnum peat moss for that purpose. The fine nature also allows us to use a scoop to clean up waste easily and allows us to keep using it as bedding for a longer period of time (important if your children, like mine, are ambivalent about their responsibilities). Value: Cheaper here than our large pet stores and easy to set up as a subscription so it arrives as often as you need it to. ... show more

  • Fantastic Bedding
Style: 24 quart
The package arrived when it said it would, and was in perfect condition. This is bedding is very light and earthy, it smells fantastic and my snake seems to already love it. I expected it to be a bit more fibrous with larger fibers, but I am still very satisfied with what I received. When i opened the bag, the package was already moist and not dry like i expected which was a pleasant surprise. The package is not resealable, so you need to find something else to close it with or a separate container to insert it in. ... show more
