  • It's just an "ok" USA Strat (SSS version)
White body, tortoise pickguard, maple neck - the look is my "dream Strat". It's generally made well, but I have some dislikes I didn't realize before I bought it. The pickups: Are the noisiest I've ever heard on a Fender guitar. The bridge saddles: Would be better off being the USA block type, not stamped steel. The push/push pot: Holy smokes, why didn't they just use the same center-push pot in the Volume position like most other Strats. This thing is far to reach for, looks odd when it's popped up and spins WAY too easily. The tremolo bar system: I couldn't get the trem arm on mine to pop in without putting an immense amount of pressure on the bridge, and getting it out was just as bad if not worse. When it would go in, it jiggled and spun loosely. To rectify this common issue (zero instructions included) you have to take off all the strings, remove the springs and then remove the bridge. Then you have to fiddle with compressing or expanding the little wire that locks the arm in place, then test it outside of the guitar. There are two hex screws as well: one adjusts the amount of spin the arm has, and the other adjusts how much play there is when the arm is inserted. This whole design is ludicrous. The whole "cold rolled steel" bridge: Makes this guitar brrrright! Ice pick bright. So bright, that it's a bit annoying after a while, and you have to keeps the treble down. No matter what adjustments I make, it still won't stay in perfect tune when you change the pitch only 1/2 step up or down. Tuners: Standard fare, nice but basic. For $1.5 thousand dollars, is it really too much to ask for locking tuners? They really don't cost much more than the stock tuners. Contoured heel: Meh. It looks good on paper, but it's hardly much of a plus. The most famous Strat players there will ever be never had this. Micro-Tilt adjustment: Standard USA fare. Without this feature I would never even consider buying a USA Strat. No way I'd pay near this much and find out later that the neck has to be shimmed to line up properly. So this is a must. New string tree design: This is very nicely designed. Neck: I love the feel of the new "fatter" design, the rolled edges and the slight vintage tint. What I don't like is a glossy fingerboard. Why did they do this after all these years of preferred satin finishes? The case is exceptional. The rest is good: nice finish, well-made nut, the frets are impeccable (could be more polished), the weight is perfect @ 8.0 bs., and I love the overall look. Overall: Fender had already perfected the USA Strat long ago, and I get the distinct feeling that they just made a few changes to upsell this from $1,200 to $1,500. In my opinion, most of the changes are detractors, and in order to get it fully up to task I'd have to replace the pickups, replace the whole bridge with the older USA knife-edge style, maybe add locking tuners and see if I can change out that push/push tone control for the older style Volume control push/push. I'd have been better off just buying something else. It does look, play and feel good, it's not a lemon by any means, I just think they went too far with the changes and diminished what had already been perfected long ago. ... show more
