I actually really like this sand. I originally bought it thinking it might look a bit too synthetic—almost like something you’d use in a kids’ tank—so I had some buyer’s remorse at first. But after adding it to my tank, I was pleasantly surprised. It looks much more natural than I expected and really improved the overall appearance. I got this mainly for my corydoras so they’d have something softer to sift through compared to gravel, and they seem to love it so far. I would definitely recommend rinsing it thoroughly before use since it’s pretty dusty and has some floating debris at first. After a good rinse though, it turned out perfect. ... show more

This is my favorite substrate, and I've used it on probably 6-7 tanks over the years. It does have a little cloudiness, but it clears up within a day or two and isn't bad enough to be harmful to the fish. I've NEVER done an at-home rinse any of the times i've used this stuff, and it's always been perfectly usable straight out of the bad. Has a nice little sparkle under good lighting, and looks great in general. Very small grains, similar in size to those of the "white sugar sand" from the same brand. I like to pair this with their black gravel. Plants grow perfecftly fine in it, and i've had success with all of the standard fish tank plants (java vern, amazon sword, dwarf grass, etc) Overall, i've always been pleased with this substrate and will continue to use it. ... show more

It’s pretty and sparkly! Very fine grain, doesn’t feel sharp. I rinsed it several times in a bucket and poured the water in my tank slowly and it didn’t make my water cloudy! I love it so far, hope the fish will too!

Compared to other aquarium sands I’ve used, this one stands out for how clean it arrives and how even the grain size is. The black color is deep and looks excellent once submerged. Minimal rinsing needed and no sharp edges, which is important for fish. It was easy to shape for aquascaping and stays put once placed. I bought this sand to setup a tank for a Congo puffer. The only complaint I have is that the second bag I got had a bunch of tiny little gravel pieces mixed in and I had to sit and pick them all out, which was a pain in the butt. The first bag didn’t have that problem. It’s not a huge deal, it ended up being worth the effort of picking those pieces out because the sand looks absolutely beautiful in my tank! ... show more

I keep an eye on specific aquarium products, and this sand in particular is always less expensive here. I purchased the 20lb bag for the same price as the baby bags were being sold at my local pet stores. And it does have enough sales happen, that you can get it at an even better price. Mine came from a facility that packed it super well. Even with other items in the box. The bag itself is thicker quality. I had to use an actual sharp instrument to cut the bag open properly. The sand is very nice. Fine, with just a very soft glimmer in light. I have a solid inch over clay substrate, with nothing but light green plants in it, and it feels like a Jurassic pond. There are some floating bits, there is sand dust clouded water, but otherwise it’s great. I do wish there was a better design to cut these things open tho. No matter how I try, I always get a tiny pocket of sand that just flings everywhere when I’m done. ... show more

This is a picture from today. I bought this back in August of 2024, and it's still holding up great! After the first few initial rinses (as you're supposed to do), the water has never been cloudy. The color of the sand still looks new. It does not clog up the filter. It's safe to use with aquatic turtles. My only complaint is that it leaves some black substance on a few surfaces, such as the leftmost artificial plant in the photo. If you use more non-porous decoration, you'll be fine. ... show more
