I have 16 hatchling leopard tortoises that love this substrate! I do spread a thin layer of hay on top so their tiny legs can walk easier, but they love to burrow down into the moist substrate at night. Easy to spot clean, and doesn't smell. Will continue to buy!

    • Amazing Substrate, BUT...
I love this substrate compared to all others, even the coveted coco chip. Easy to clean, absorbs water nicely and releases humidity at a nice rate. Is more resistant to mold & mildew compared to coco. Great substrate in my opinion, looks the best as well. BUT.. the only thing was this is 2 very small bags. I can get 27qt bags for $8 cheaper.. 16qt vs 27qt, for cheaper.. Yeah, Little over priced from this seller but the sub itself is amazing. ... show more

I've been buying this for a while and it worked great for my ball pythons at first. Held humidity pretty decently too. Now I think I'm gonna start buying a different brand. I had disinfected one of my bps tanks just as I do every month. Now shes pretty big so it's kind of a hassle. A few hours later, my fiance noticed small bugs jumping around all over the substrate. At first I thought.. isopods? Spring tails? But this specific product is NOT supposed to have bugs in it at all. I had then remembered reading stories from people that had the same thing happen to them and realized this is what they were talking about. To say the least I was pretty upset having to clean our her 40 gallon and everything inside of it ALL OVER AGAIN the same day being 8 month pregnant. If you have this, either bake or freeze the substrate or maybe even both before using. Or just dont buy it at all. ... show more

Be sure to use a mite killer or bed bug spray to destoy mite populations before they harm your scaley friends. The plastic bag this cypres product is sold in should not be placed into cribs as it could pose a choking hazard. Please don't put the wood shavings into the crib either. Babies don't like it because it is scratchy. ... show more

    • Dry it before you use it for a corn snake! 99% humidity if you don't
Do not use this for corn snakes unless you dry it first. I opened the bag and it was all moist. Checked the hydrometer the next day and it said 99%. I am stuck in a strange spot where I need to let me new snake stay undisturbed, but the humidity is way to high. I guess it is great for ball pythons, but dry it before you use it on a corn snake ... show more
