Solid material, took it out and yes, like other glass fire tubes you have to lift the glass to light it. I found using the tumble weed fire starters works best. Very little smoke and is easy to move around the patio. I purchased for ambiance and it definitely delivers.

We tried multiple ways to light it and keep it lit and had no luck. We used the pellets specifically for heating and it still would not light properly. Cool looking but there are major design flaws in it. Returning it.

Cool concept, but lacks a lot of little details! First you have no way to get it started without removing the glass tube. Second it varies if it will start or just smoke for 20 minutes. It seems to get clogged up where the pellets burn and the fire doesn’t get the right amount of airflow. After every use, I have to take the glass tube out and turn it upside down to get grate unclogged. ... show more

I am so glad I went with this pellet heater over a traditional propane one. It puts out a surprising amount of heat, and the "rocket stove" design is really efficient—it burns through the pellets cleanly with very little smoke. It’s also much easier to transport for camping trips than a bulky heater. The ash tray makes cleanup a breeze, and the build quality feels solid and durable. It’s become our favorite addition to the backyard for coffee on the patio or hanging out on the balcony. It makes a beautiful conversation piece but does not provide the warmth i was looking for. The wheels make it easy to move around for a more portable option for placement under the patio. It does make smoke so keep it in the open or under an area with high celing. If you had a smaller space this would probably work. My patio is large and open so the heat doesn't stay. ... show more

Works great. Poor instructions but fairly easy. Buy wood pellets, about $7 for 40#. Load side chamber, lift up the glass tube and drop a fire starter on top of the pellets. Takes 15-20 minutes to get roaring, but flames will come out the top.
