Description

The Yost Vises 910-HV 10" high-visibility all-steel utility combination pipe and bench vise with 360-degree swivel base mounts to a workbench to provide light-duty clamping action. The 360-degree swivel base adjusts the direction of the jaws for proper placement. Hand-tightening the two lock knobs on the base secures its position. The cast steel body has been painted with safety- yellow paint for visibility and has a flat portion that acts as a reinforced anvil and additional work surface. Both the top jaws and pipe jaws are grooved for enhanced grip. The top jaws are made of hardened steel and can be replaced when worn, and the pipe jaws are cast in place. The jaws draw closer together or farther apart by turning the vise handle clockwise or counterclockwise. The main screw that controls the jaws has been continuous rolled for high strength and is covered by a bar to protect it from damage. A rubber washer on either side of the handle prevents unwanted sliding when turning, and the balls on each end unscrew to enable replacement of the handle if worn. The base has three 0.625"-diameter holes for mounting hardware (not included).SpecificationsJaw width (nominal)10"Jaw opening (nominal)10"Throat depth (nominal)4"Pipe capacity7/8" to 2-5/8"Overall dimensions8 x 10 x 21 in. Vises use the clamping action of jaws to hold a workpiece in place for applications such as drilling and sawing. Vise styles are categorized by how the device is mounted. For example, bench vises mount to a benchtop; drill press vises bolt to a drill press; and woodworking vises fit underneath, on top, or to the side of a workbench. A vise's jaw opening and throat depth should be large enough for the workpiece.Yost Vises manufactures a wide range of vises, including bench- mount, woodworking, and drill-press styles. The company, founded in 1908, is headquartered in Holland, MI.

  • Nice craftsman vise
To be clear I have not placed a bar or pipe in this vise and beat on it with a hammed to shape it. If you use one that way my review will not help. That said I really like this compact well designed vise. One point of the design that stands heads and shoulders above the comp, is that the base allows the vise to swivel 360 degrees. Hoodog! If you want to utilize your vise fully on a small work bench you need to be able to swing to either or both sides, so 360 degrees is important. It grips very well, sturdy so steady, finally the swivel lock is two, count 'em two, levers so one is on each side. I love that feature. I mounted this on a pre-built workbench that is 4 ft long and the size is a great match. You would not want anything larger. I did find, as are most new vises, that there was some dirty grease that needed wiping off and the main spindle threads were dry. I lubed up the threads it is smooth as silk. Do this, it will improve your overall experience. Being 66 yrs old I doubt I will be buying more in the future, but you should. Money well spent. ... show more

  • Great vice for gunsmithing
Style: Heavy Duty Size: 6"
Maybe just a little too much. I don't really do much these days. I probably could have gotten away with another 4" vice. Figured I'd get something a little bigger just in case. Plus the price was too good to beat. So far no issues. I have it mounted toa work bench with a 1 3/4" top. I did add a brace underneath the bottom where the bolts go through for added support. I have those fitted with fender washers and using lock washers and nuts with nylon inserts for added support. complete overkill. But it there if i need it. ... show more

  • Not great for clamping small pipe like 3/8 or 1/2" but great value for a basement dweller.
Style: High-Visibility Heavy Duty Size: 6"
The only reason I gave four stars instead of five is because the pipe jaws are not for small pipe like 3/8" and barely 1/2" pipe but the vise is sturdy and didn't have much wobble and the price was right so it is a great deal.

  • Nice sturdy vise for the money
Style: Heavy Duty Size: 5"
I am just an occasional hobbyist, so I need an inexpensive yet capable vise. This ended up being the right choice. It’s solid, good looking, with an excellent grip. Handle rotation is smooth enough for my needs. I am sure there are better professional grade vises out there, but this one can competently handle any project I attempt around the house. Verdict: if you’re like me and need a capable vise for an occasional medium-duty project, you will have no regrets buying this vise. ... show more

  • Well Done.
Normally I view bigger as better so when I needed a vice I thought back to the business we had owned which had a big vice and started there. A good big vice has a good big price and that starts the search in earnest. I prefer good over big and this 4" is very good. It is "all steel" and not a cluster of brittle castings. Operation to open and close is a one finger operation. Tightening doesn't take all of ones strength to obtain a non slip grip. Nice to get a good product that is as advertised and is probably better than I'll ever need. ... show more

  • Impressive
Style: Heavy Duty Size: 6"
I'm quite pleased with this 6" vise. The jaws align perfectly and the ACME lead screw operates flawlessly. Yost lists parts including the lead screw and lead screw nut which is totally awesome. The channel is welded to the front jaw whereas all of the ductile iron vises I've seen have the channel "built in" as part of the casting. While ductile iron is generally rated at the same 60,000 PSI I believe that structural cast steel is a wee bit more "flexible" so should be a bit more forgiving before "breakage" but may very well "dent" or even bend more easily. I'll be giving this quite a workout in the next couple of weeks and will update this review if I encounter any problems. One thing worth noting - the lead screw has no stop so will unscrew entirely. The lead screw nut is fairly long but I think anything past about a 5 3/4" jaw opening would result in too few teeth engaged to achieve full clamp load. More info would be needed to calculate that but Yost says this vises "Jaws able to withstand a load of up to 1600 inch pounds (133 ft lbs) without distortion of the vise or any components". It's not designed to replace a hydraulic press but I'll undoubtedly use it to replace U-joints in truck drive shafts at some point. I should play it safe and never use a cheater pipe on the handle but at some point I know I will because that's how I roll. ... show more
