  • Adequate, cheaper option to metal or wooden gate but not completely toddler proof
Prefacing this by saying we like this gate and it has served a good purpose for us--we've bought a total of 4 of them over the past 3 years. Generally speaking, we've had very few issues with these gates and we definitely recommend it with some caveats. That being said, I will try to illustrate some of the pros and cons of this gate. We have 1 cat and 2 toddlers. The first gate that blocks off the kids' playroom from the rest of the house. The second gate blocks off the living room containing a brick fireplace that spans an entire 14 foot wall which we decided not to childproof and the basement stairs. The third gate is outside at the top of the stairs on our deck. The fourth gate replaced the first gate that my son broke by laying over top of the extended gate while it was unlocked causing a clip inside the gate itself to break off, sending the gate itself to the floor. The clip inside the retractable gate just snapped under the weight of my 40 lb 3 year old jumping on it while the plastic clips that were screwed into the wall were still perfectly intact--which was actually good because once the replacement came, I didn't need to re-screw anything into the door jamb, it just clipped right on to the existing pieces. In the meantime, I just unclipped one of the other gates and clipped it to the one blocking the playroom until the replacement came. Other than that, it does a fine job keeping a child 0-3 years old safely locked into a space as long as they're not yanking or jumping on it. The retractable gate is much more convenient than a door gate, in my opinion, but there are some drawbacks and benefits that should be called out: 1. A clever child can probably squeeze themselves under the gate since it's basically fabric and can be moved pretty easily, especially if the gate is not locked or if not installed all the way to the bottom of the floor (see item 4 below). 2. Don't expect this to keep a cat out of a room. Mine can definitely slide under it or jump over it. 3. Along the same lines, it would probably be fine for most dogs, but I would guess a very small dog could slide underneath and a very large dog could probably break through it if it wanted to. 4. Something to keep in mind: There are two plastic pieces that screw into the wall or door jamb to mount the gate onto, if you have trim at the bottom of your walls like most people, it can make for a tricky install if you want the gate to be flush with the floor. They give you some spacers to install in these situations, but my trim ended up being just a little thicker than the spacer, so I wasn't able to install it that way and screwed in those pieces just above the trim at the bottom so the gate ended up siting about 2 or 3 inches from the floor. With that kind of clearance and given the gate is flexible, it can easily be pushed away to make more space to fit under, especially when unlocked--which means your toddler or animal could likely escape eventually. Despite this, the gates works fine for us in most cases but you may want to consider an alternative if it's imperative that you keep whatever you're locking in behind that gate to actually stay there. Like I said, my 3 year old figured out how to escape and naturally my 1 year old followed suit. They're usually not unsupervised for more than a few minutes, if at all, so it's fine for us--but that might not be fine for you. 5. Gates with doors on them tend to have a pretty narrow entryway which can make carrying something like a laundry basket or a baby through them annoying at best and deathly treacherous at worst, especially if it's at the top of the stairs. The nice thing about this gate is that when you retract it, it only sticks out a couple inches from the wall on one side, giving you nearly the entire width of the actual doorway to walk through which makes carrying a laundry basket much easier in/out of that room. We still have a traditional gate at the top of our stairs and it only makes for about 2.5 feet of clearance when the gate door is open on a stairwell that is more than 3 feet wide. Plus, there is a bar at the bottom of the traditional gate that you have to step over. The only reason I haven't installed this retractable gate at the top of the stairs inside is because I'm afraid one of the kids will crawl under it and fall down the stairs. Final verdict: It's a fine gate especially if you're going to be in and out of the room where the kids or pets are and will do the job well. Just don't let your guard down too much. ... show more

  • Lots of extra hardware and mounting clips.
I was able to install three gates with one packet of the included screws and I still have a few left over. The gate comes with two sets of mounting brackets and hooks, as well as thick and thin adapters for if you have baseboards. One thing to make sure of, is the rolled portion of the gate really needs to be on the left side of the opening. I tried one the other way and while the gate will close, it's too flexible when installed that way. With the included extras it's possible to mount the other set of clips and move the entire gate if needed to change locations. The gate comes off the clips with a push button latch. Pretty much push down on the button and unlock it, then lift the whole thing up to remove. Locking and unlocking is even easier. Push down on the large button on top and turn. A smart toddler or preschooler could probably learn how to open it if they are tall enough to reach. We got ours to keep our small dog out of certain rooms at times. The nice thing is the roll up gate it there waiting should we need it but out of the way if we don't. Overall the gate seems sturdy and the install kit make it very easy to install. You will need a drill, a Philips head bit, a hammer to set the included drywall toggles should you not have a stud, a stud finder is helpful, and an appropriate sized drill bit should you need the toggles. The kit includes short and long screws, drywall toggles and a full size placement guide. ... show more

  • Easy, sleek design
Installation was a little confusing at first, but once you figure it out it’s super easy. There’s a guide for where to drill the holes on each side which makes it super easy. They’re super durable and sleek.

  • the instructions are useless
The level of frustration caused by trying to decipher the instructions was ridiculous. 1. determine if you are installing it on the inside or the outside 2. Hold the gate up to the doorway and decide which way you want it to go. right and left means nothing because it depends on which side of the doorway you're on. 3. jump ahead to the instructions for inside and outside the doorway BEFORE you drill any holes. The paper guides say D1 and D2 but you only need to drill EITHER D1 or D2, not both. 3. Install it above your baseboard if possible. The millions of extra pieces are for if you drill into your base board. I just installed it above my baseboard and didn't need half the pieces it came with If the instructions had come in this order I would have not rated it at all or given it 5 stars but I now have extra holes that have to be patched and I'm pissed that what should have taken 10 minutes took 45, minus the patching. ... show more

  • So far it’s been doing its job!
We put this baby gate up to keep our dog from going upstairs. He’s old and likes to mosey on up there for no dang reason and then he almost always falls when coming back down the stairs. This has been a perfect deterrent. It’s working well. It fit perfectly in the doorway as you can see from my picture. Retracts easily. So far so good! ... show more
