I saw Rex Kreuger recommend this style of plane on YouTube and I decided to try my hand at tuning one! Given how much can go wrong with an entry level Stanley-pattern plane (like the Amazon basics one, which was so poorly engineered I gave up on it and sent it back), I figured, go simple. This is pretty simple, being hammer adjusted, and I can work wood way easier than cast iron, which makes this style of plane very attractive for me. The rating I gave reflects this plane's capacity to be tuned and refined to use as a basic beginner's jack plane. Don't buy a budget plane expecting it to cut out of the box! They all take work. First things first: the sole is nearly dead flat out of the box. There's a brass insert at the front of the mouth - the insert on mine sits a few thou proud of the sole. I haven't done any work on the sole yet, but it's not going to need much at all, and it'll shave as it is. The chip breaker is narrower than the iron by about a 16th of an inch. The bed seems fine, but the mouth is really roughly machined inside, and there's a 16th inch gap/groove between the brass insert and the wood on the front of the mouth (which I have tried to fill with beige wood filler, as pictured). Lots of places for shavings to stick and clog. The wedge that shipped with this plane (the darker one in my photos) was super rough and poorly fitted - narrower than the mouth of the plane, too thick, and the forks on the wedge are square, meaning shavings get stuck there. Rather than improve this wedge, I just made a new one of the correct dimensions out of mahogany (the lighter one with a square top). The iron is made of okay steel. It was machined fairly well - didn't take too long to flatten it. The bevel on the iron came with a hollow grind which wasn't quite square. I did the minimum work to get it fairly square and razor sharp, but the blade just needs to be completely reprofiled. The iron is probably an 8th thick, maybe 3/32nds, and doesn't appear to be laminated. The chip breaker is a bit thinner, and is a simple piece of stamped and bent carbon steel. The bevel on it was super rough but easily honed. It didn't take much to get it sharp, flat, and perfectly mated to the iron. No knurling on the chip breaker screw. So those are all my notes about the plane. It's my first hand plane, and I knew I was buying a project and not something ready out of the box. Am I happy with it? Absolutely. With no hands on experience, and only a couple months of woodworking under my belt, I was able to get this guy planing ok with about ten hours of work. Haven't tried it with hardwoods yet but in softwood I'm getting reasonably smooth, flat surfaces that shimmer - and I haven't got a great edge profile on it yet. I didn't expect this plane to do seriously amazing smoothing work - I was looking for a jack plane to do flattening and dimensioning. One thing I'll say is, I don't know how much work will need to be done after the plane acclimates to my shop - I saw one review where their plane cracked after a couple months. But that's just how it goes sometimes ... it looks like they've sealed this guy with some kind of penetrating oil, so hopefully it'll settle ok. If you're looking for a brand new first plane and you like the idea of a hammer adjusted wooden model, this is your guy, I think. I was skeptical of that one review that said their plane was dead flat out of the box, but yeah - I'll corroborate that! ... show more

Not just "good for the money" this is genuinely GOOD. You're getting what you pay for on the initial fit/finish, and like any plane that doesn't cost $600, out of the box it will need some setup. What blew my mind was that the sole of mine is dead flat. Out of the box. NOTHING COMES OUT OF THE BOX THAT FLAT. I put it to a surface plate with some 120 grit just to make sure I'm not insane and sure enough, dead flat. I would not expect all of them to come flat, but it's a wooden plane, so a $2 granite floor tile from the hardware store, some spray glue and a sheet of 80, 120, and 220 grit (up to 400 if you're feeling fancy) will get it set up right. You want the edge of the front, edge of the rear, and both sides of the mouth of the plane to be flat. everything in between doesn't matter. If yours does need flattening, make sure you do it with the iron and wedge in the plane, just retracted, because wood body planes have a habit of twisting a smidge once the iron and wedge are inserted, so you want it under the tension it's gonna be used at while you flatten. The handle can be removed or left in, just tap it in or out with a hammer, and it goes from a nice push plane to a nice pull plane. this is called a "hong kong" style chinese plane and it works amazingly well. The body is a nice hardwood, not rosewood or ebony hard, but seems very solid. They even put a thick brass insert at the mouth, which is a super premium touch. Mouth is fixed (like all wood body planes) but the shape and size is perfect for a jack plane. Think of this like an asian feeling Stanley #4. You lose some of the ease of adjustment of the bailey style iron plane, but you gain control and precision, and this thing is LIGHT (that's a good thing for the kind of work this plane does) The only rough parts on mine were the wedge, which just needed sanding smooth, and the iron/chip breaker were ground crazy rough. It did take a rather excessive amount of time on 40, 80, 120, 220, 320, 800, 1500 and then green jeweler's compounded leather stropping to get right. The back of the blade was pretty flat but it looked like it was ground with a broken tuna can, deeeeeply gouged so that it needed a lot of metal removed to properly flatten the back. Once I did (it took like 25 minutes) It seems to hold a superb edge. The chip breaker was nowhere near as bad and took five minutes to put a knife edge on. Adjusting is very easy, all you need is a soft hammer for retracting the blade, tap on the back to pull the blade back, tap the back of the iron to advance it, and tap on the sides to shift the iron side to side. It seems scary at first, but you'll figure it out fast and be a pro within an hour of just playing with this thing. Once you set it up, this thing is unbelievably good and versatile, and very comfortable. The light weight makes it usable all darn day (and seriously, there is no plane on earth that's under $400 that doesn't need ALL of these steps done, for some reason no manufacturer makes a "ready to use" hand plane. So this needs very little setup, particularly since it's a wood body. Sanding a cast iron plane flat is agony.) As long as your expectations are reasonable and you don't plan to have this thing out of the box and cutting wood in five minutes, this might be the most outrageous deal on woodworking that there is. ... show more

The mass and the design are practical and useful. However, It needs more improvements in the finish. Besides sharpening the blade, which is common, the foot of the chipper rested on its pointy ends, locking up the blade and chipper. The chipper foot had to be ground flat (picture).
