This little AC seems to work pretty well. It's a very basic unit with only 2 control knobs. Easy to install. It is louder than my previous unit and sometimes it just makes the weirdest noises for no apparent reason.

About the unit itself. I wasn't paying attention when I purchased it, it has very basic turn style knob controls. 2 cooling modes (one star * and two star **) which basically adjusts fan speed, and 2 fan modes (low/high). There is also a knob that is from 1 (warmest) to 7 (coolest) that is a very basic thermostat. I would have preferred a unit with temperature sensor/display. There is no "vent" option to bring in outside air in fan modes, it appears that it would just recirculate inside air. Having a vent mode would be nice, because at night when it's cool outside I would be ablet to bring in cooler air instead of just blowing the warmer air in the room. In my installation, the unit is supported fully by the window frame. Compared to a more expensive unit I purchased for a larger space, this unit is relatively noisy. The fans are somewhat loud, and when the compressor runs there is a fair amount of vibration/low "hum" that is transmitted to the window frame/wall (hence the nickname "window rattler" for these type air conditioners). Also the dust filter slides out the right side of the panel (see photo), and I will not be able to remove it for cleaning in my installation as front of the unit sits just inside almost flush with my window frame/sill, and the unit is only about 2 inches from the right side of the window frame/sill. The larger unit I have in the main house has a front panel the opens "in" to the room and would be a much better option for a window mounted AC unit. This is really designed for a "double hung" window, not a sliding window. Due to this fact, install was relatively difficult. The unit is 16" wide, and the window unmodified is about 15.75" wide. I had to remove the sliding window pane, and cut the vinyl window frame to make it fit. Then I fashioned custom pieces of wood to fit the channel the sliding window usually rides in to hold the unit in the window. I was able to attach a piece of plywood to the wood blocks in the sliding channel to seal the area above the window. This unit replaces an 11,000 BTU "portable" AC unit, and not surprisingly I find it a little under powered to keep my entire 165sq ft. office (in a dark colored, insulated metal building) as cool as I would like it. However, I believe it _almost_ keeps the room as cool as the larger portable unit. We've recently had some ~95-100F days, and I was able to keep the room in the 78-82F range (most of the day below 80 but peaked at 82 for 20-30min). My computer is near the window and I was able to direct the air flow over me making the room feel much cooler and more comfortable than it actual was. Overall this is a reasonable solution for the space I have a relatively low cost. I would ideally like to install "mini-spilt" with ~9000 btu, but that's about 5 or 6 times the cost, would require some cement and electrical work, and would be difficult to find a location for the inside air handling unit due to relatively low ceiling and height of window on the side where I would need to install it. ... show more

Unit came well packaged and sealed. our bedroom unit failed and and looked like a good replacement for it. My grandson stopped by and removed the failed unit,unboxed the new one, made the required adjustments and plugged it in and turned it on. The media could not be loaded. This AC unit does the job - it blows cold air. I like the compact size, it takes up very little space in the window. And even storing it when not in use, its not that large. It does run loud. The fan is loud, and the compressor is quite loud (listen to attached video in the review). I'm using it in a room that is not always occupied so the noise is ok. But I don't think I would use this in my bedroom or office, because the loud noise when its running might bother me after long periods of time. Its energy efficient. I used a Kil-a-watt and it is right as advertised, so I expect it to not add too much cost for energy. And it puts out cold air. I actually prefer the fact that it uses mechanical on/off knobs. I ordered this specific unit because of this feature. I don't want it to have digital controls or all that WiFi enabled stuff. I just wanted basic on/off and dial thermostat. This allows me to connect it to my home automation appliance module. I prefer this type of control panel. 4 stars. I wish it was quieter, but besides that, it does the job. ... show more
