  • Westinghouse chipper is a good value.
I've now used my Westinghouse Chipper for several hours. Overall I'm pleased. It did the work I required, which was chipping a significant amount of small oak, pepper tree, elderberry and manzanita branches. The resultant chipped material was mostly fine for either composting or mulching. (Note: it is not a leaf shredder.) The only exception to that was very thin twigs – 1/16” or less – that were still flexible. These were cut to 5-6” lengths, rather than chipped as fine as the other material. Small dry twigs went through better. This is acceptable to me, since I use this primarily for mulch. It was also very easy to clear jams, which were rare. On the down side, it's nearly impossible to feed much material at one time without using the push tool. In addition, chipping larger branches was really slow. The machine would trim off a few cuts and then I had to move the branch around to get it to trim more off. I found it easiest when possible to keep rotating the branch 360 degrees to get it to continue trimming. I do not like the shape of the feed slot. It would be easier to feed if it had the one larger hole at the right (standing at the back of the machine) and then a straight slot for the remainder – similar to the SunJoe chipper. The same for the push tool – it should have straight smooth sides. As it is there's a tendency to get the push tool caught up on either the material being chipped or the odd shapes and rubber flaps of the feed slot. It's great that you can hang up the push tool on either side of the machine, but the tool should have a greater distance between the hooks on the tool and the flanges that prevent to tool from sliding too far into the feed slot. If it did, it would be easier to slap it up against the machine and slide the hooks down into the holes on the machine. As it is, I pretty much had to look every time I hung the tool up. Having used the SunJoe chipper for several years, I would say that the SunJoe was a little easier to use, but I like the chipped material from the Westinghouse better. However, the SunJoe crushes rather than cuts, and it does better with the small twigs. Also, as I found out when my SunJoe failed, dust and debris can build up inside the SunJoe, which doesn't appear to be an issue with the Westinghouse. At half the price of a new SunJoe chipper, I think the Westinghouse chipper is well worth it. ... show more

  • Just what I needed for the job
Have to put bigger tree parts in slow. Works great on most tree waste. Cuts into small clips, fast on most material, have to go slow on limbs over 1"

  • Great for medium weight branches and easy to set up and store.
The media could not be loaded. Works great! I love this little wood shredder! It was easy to install- just assemble the legs and wheels and it was ready to go. It comes with a bag to catch the chips, which is nice since it can fold up for storage and it holds a lot of chips! I needed it for light to medium weight branches and trimmings and it exceeded my expectations. I had never used a wood chipper before. It’s loud and a bit dusty, as expected, so wear ear protection and eye protection of course. There is a paddle so that if a branch gets stuck or needs an extra push you can get it through safely. I used it to give smaller branches a final push, to keep my fingers away- probably more caution than needed as it seems like the blades are deep within the chamber. But as a first time user I was more than happy to use the paddle for this. In the end i got rid of the trimming taking up space and I have a whole bag of fresh mulch I can use on the flowerbeds! Win win! Couldn’t be happier. I’m excited to use this later in the season when my big magnolia tree needs a trim too. ... show more

  • I’m putting it out for the trash after 6 months.
The last Westinghouse product I will ever buy. I think at some point they made decent products, but that’s just not the case anymore. This piece of junk lasted exactly 6 months before I just would not power on. I took it apart. I checked every connection. Nothing. When it did work, it was okay. I didn’t expect anything spectacular, and that’s what it was. It chipped up the branches I fed into it as long as they were the correct size. When it would get clogged or stuck, it was easy enough to open it and clean it out. However, now it’s just a big blue paper weight. Literally buy any other product. Stay away from this brand. ... show more

  • No replacement blade information
Put it through some pretty heavy use for a day. Worked well in the beginning. Blades dulled and took a lot of force to get it to eat up anything else towards the end of the day. Wouldn't be a problem if the owner's manual or something anywhere posted compatible blades to replace with. Can't find it anywhere though. Took two stars off for that. Without the ability to replace blades it's basically $120 for one day's use and then it's trash. If there's blades somewhere for 15 bucks, that would be a different story. ... show more
