  • Has its niche
Color: Kindling Splitter with Gloves and Bag
I really like this wall-mounted kindling splitter. While I will not use it exclusively for my kindling needs, there are certain types of wood where this tool shines (and others where I would not use this). This works incredible on my scrap wood pieces that are leftover from carpentry and construction projects. I can’t think of another way I can split those quicker or easier. When it comes to natural wood, softer woods are obviously easier. As far as the length goes, this works well for about four to ten inches, although I feel like I need to be extra careful with my fingers while placing the log if the wood is on the short side. While I’ll still use my log splitter to make a big batch of kindling from logs, I’ll only do that while I’ve already got the logs splitter out and set up. For my kindling needs in between splitting logs, this is so much better than my other kindling cracker that requires I use a small sledgehammer, make a lot of noise in the house, and has a lot higher risk of injury. In comparison, this tool definitely better because it allows me to split wood silently in the house silently, it works well with the right types of wood, and feels way safer than what I’ve been doing. ... show more

  • New version of old design
Color: Kindling Splitter
This is the clone version of an old Scandinavian design. While still manufactured there, they sell for 3 times the cost of this copy. That’s a lot of money when there are so many alternative methods to achieve the same results. Though not of the strength or rustic charm of the often hand made originals, this copy produces results that are much the same. The most important consideration in use of any version, is choice of woods. The product page makes clear that results will depend on choice of woods—it only works well with straight grained softwoods, such as pine, birch and cedar; don’t even consider a gnarly hardwood. While originally intended for unprocessed wood of modest length (around 12-16 inches) diameter (< 6”) and weight, I find it most useful to split up construction scraps and woodworking off cuts. It is intended to be wall-mounted, and they include lag bolts to do so. You may want to use higher quality lag or through bolts depending on what you are mounting it to. Mounted vertically, as intended, operation is simple, raise the arm and place the wood against one of the notches in the stepped backstrap, then lever the steel blade into the end of the wood. The combination of the leverage and long arm force the blade into the wood—how easy, or even achievable this is depends a lot on how large and strong you are (and, of course the choice of wood). For longer pieces, and those more resistant to splitting, you may need to reposition the wood a second or third time as the blade penetrates along the length of the wood, using progressively higher notches to maintain sufficient leverage as the blade drives down along the length of the wood piece. The hinge and rigidity of the back strap. restricts side-to-side blade movement, but I find this clone to allow more lateral deflection of the blade than the solid cast iron original. Overall, a useful and affordable tool that is safer than a hatchet but little more so than a baton. ... show more

  • Perfect if you pay attention to parameters... ideal for 10" long, smaller dia., knot free wood.
Color: Kindling Splitter
This splitter perfectly does what the parameters outline: "Lengths under 10 inches for optimal performance." If you want to split longer pieces, simply mount another "notch" or "shelf" made from angle iron or what-not below the splitter to give you more range. This is for splitting kindling from small, relatively straight grained, knot-free wood. This is NOT a log splitter for gnarly, knotty wood-splitting. ;o) This splitter is nicely powder-coated with a matt, textured finish that appears will hold up to wear nicely. One small nit-pick, the knife had a slight warp to it, probably from the heat of the cutting torch, which caused it to not nest into its slot when in the resting, closed position. I put it into my smooth jawed vise and straightened it out, so now it rests in its slot better. It'd be ideal if the manufacturer rounded or beveled the square edges of the knife so that it pops into place with less resistance. I'll probably bevel mine with an angle grinder, smooth it with a flap wheel and hit it with some hammerite paint. Again, these are my nit-picks that I can easily correct. Overall I like the build quality, function and finish of this tool and highly recommend & would order again. ... show more

  • Could be better.
Color: Kindling Splitter with Gloves and Bag
I will start out by saying, I really really wanted to like this, because I've always wanted to try one of these, but it is much too short to be as effective as some of the homemade ones I've seen on YouTube. If only this had been made about two feet longer, it would have been much more useful. The problem is that it can only split pieces of wood that are up to 10" when the standard for most wood stoves is 18" long pieces of wood. This means you would have to cut half size pieces to use with this splitter. The other problem is that this splitter will only split very easy to split wood, such as softwoods. The problem with this is that hardwoods make the best firewood and this splitter will barely split hardwood, even if it isn't knotty. I believe this would be a good splitter if it were only about 2 feet longer. This would allow it to split longer pieces of wood and it would also give you much more leverage since the cutting lever would be much longer. As it is, I would not recommend this splitter for most people, for most uses. ... show more
