You'll need to mount this onto something else to make it useable. I used 4 x 4 scraps and fabricated a base for it. As other reviews mention, yes, it's a bit tricky to get to the screw holes, but if you use a longer driver attachment, it will work. It arrives quite sharp. I've probably made 1/4 of a face cord of kindling with it so far, and it's held up fairly well. There are a few chips in the blade at this point, but that's to be expected with oak and maple. I think I can just give it a quick filing or sharpening with a rotary tool at some point. You'll need some sort of hammer with this. I just got a cheapy one pound hammer at Harbor Freight, and I should have gotten something just a bit heftier. Something like a blacksmith 2lb hammer would probably be ideal. Watch your shins using this, though! Sometimes the kindling pieces will go flying, so at least wear long pants if not some additional shin/foot protection. ... show more

this kindling wedge works great! I used a 2 1/2 pound mini sledge. I don't hit the blade. I was amazed at how easy it splits stuff. longest log split was 15 inchs. the supplied screws r a joke. base can be improved. note: I used on fresh cut black oak. mounted on lg log helped.

Awesome for what it was designed for. There are some with reviews I've read that think this device is suitable for splitting logs, NOT SO. That said, works great for kindling, just need to make sure the object the device is attached to is sturdy.
