Works great for kindling, far safer than wildly swinging a hatchet. We attached to a piece of 2x8 so is easy to transport to campsites. One slight design flaw is that the base is small such that it was difficult to position a screwdriver vertically. The "spreader" wings on top get in the way so that you either need a very long screwdriver shaft or have to install the screws at an angle. Also, the cap doesn't fit securely but can be secured with a couple of rubber bands. Otherwise, great product at a nice price.

The media could not be loaded. I went with this because it didn’t have a ring that limits the size of wood that can be split. It is great for kindling and the next size up of logs. I have split rather large pieces of wood with it. Very sturdy. The only issues I have had is if the logs are longer than 16 inches they can get stuck on my base log if the wood didn’t already fully split (rare). The fix would be if the wedge was taller or the flare was wider but overall I really like it and it makes quick work of kindling. I use traditional axe for kindling too but this is safer for the kids to use.

You'll need to mount this onto something else to make it useable. I used 4 x 4 scraps and fabricated a base for it. As other reviews mention, yes, it's a bit tricky to get to the screw holes, but if you use a longer driver attachment, it will work. It arrives quite sharp. I've probably made 1/4 of a face cord of kindling with it so far, and it's held up fairly well. There are a few chips in the blade at this point, but that's to be expected with oak and maple. I think I can just give it a quick filing or sharpening with a rotary tool at some point. You'll need some sort of hammer with this. I just got a cheapy one pound hammer at Harbor Freight, and I should have gotten something just a bit heftier. Something like a blacksmith 2lb hammer would probably be ideal. Watch your shins using this, though! Sometimes the kindling pieces will go flying, so at least wear long pants if not some additional shin/foot protection.

Sharp and convenient way to split very well seasoned light wood. If you hot a knot or split a harder wood, the blade edge will dent and dull quickly.

Was nervous about this purchase due to its size... much smaller than you would expect. However, we've used it to make kindling most of the winter -went through half a cord so far and it is holding up just great. Solid product, easy to use, very effective. It comes with a plastic cover for the sharp edge that just sits on top (doesn't snap in or feel secure) but even in very high winds it stayed put. My wife loves it as well. She's chopped up more kindling with it than I have! For reference, we're using dried cedar logs between 3-10" diameter with a 5 lb sledge and it makes quick work of it.

I've split a fair amount of kindling in my day and randomly saw this on Amazon and decided to give it a go. I attached it into a fairly big, flat, round I had laying around and went to work. The head on this is incredibly sharp - so much so I've scratched myself accidently if I don't leave the cover on the head. I bought a mallet, wear a glove, and let it rip. It gives about perfect size kindling without the risk of needing to hold the kindling while you swing a hatchet. If you attach it on a round that's tall enough (or whatever you attach it to) you can pull up a chair and split which is a nice bonus. I saw some negative reviews of it not splitting big enough logs, but I think those folks are confused. This isn't for splitting logs but for kindling. If you purchase this for kindling you won't be let down.
