  • It Works, Very Lightweight, No instructions, Wobbly and Weird warning to not touch surface
I bought this portable induction cooktop to use outside when I am grilling. I really needed a burner so I can cook up something in a pot rather than going back and forth from the grill to the stove. I have never used an electric cooktop of any kind. I grew up on gas, had gas in every house I've lived in, including my current home. So this is a first for me. I was going to get a gas burner, but saw this and decided to try it. The cooktop comes with a short cord and for outside I have to use an extension cord. There are no instructions, so it's been a bit of a guessing game on how to use this. It did come with a tiny magnet to test cookware for usability with induction. Since I mostly cook with cast iron, I didn't have to test it or go buy any cookware for this. When in use, the small (computer) fan on the bottom turns on. I assume this is to try to keep the cooktop cool. There is a booklet with a long list of "do not do this" statements. One of which is do not touch the surface of the cooktop. This really surprised me because everything I have read and watched about induction is that you can touch them while cooking and you can't be burned because the cooking surface doesn't heat up. So why is that a possibility with this one? One unfortunate thing is that this wobbles a bit when on a flat surface, which means the legs are not all the same length. That is really frustrating. This cooktop is 46 USD at the time of this review and it is cheap compared to named brands, but in line with other unknown branded cooktops. Everything about this is lightweight plastic, so I can't imagine this lasting for a long time. I guess we will see. ... show more

  • Feels underpowered
I used this portable induction cooker for a couple weeks primarily heating water in a kettle for tea and coffee. I was excited to use it as heating water on my friends induction stovetop is super fast compared to my electric stove. I was pretty disappointed in my experience with this. For starters there's no instructions, which was fine at first, the controls seems pretty intuitive but they weren't. Took a minute to figure out once its turned on you can only start it by setting to max power and going down from there. I ended up using it on max power most of the time. I compared times with my electric coil stove at boiling a kettle of water and it usually took between 1-2 minutes longer on the induction cooker so I gave up on using it for that. On a positive note, it is very lightweight with simple controls once you learn to use them. I think I'll start bringing it to cabins that often have electricity but a small or no kitchen. I think it'll be perfect for that or a simmer burner when the stoves full. ... show more

  • Good stand alone option for cooking
Induction stoves seem to be the choice of the future in order to stem the tide of global warming. My location is among the first to announce the discontinuation of gas appliances in residential construction. I was interested in seeing how well they worked without having to change an existing stove top. Also, it would be useful to replace a camping stove for shabu shabu. One issue in making the change is the type of cookware that you must use. For induction to work, there must be iron content in the pan. A very small magnet is included with the instructions to test this. If you have small children, this magnet is a potential choking hazard so I wish it was made larger. My 40- year-old Magnalite anodized aluminum set is now useless. The surface is smooth and flat so cleaning is simple. The bottom of the pan must also be flat. It does become hot to the touch due to the heat of the pan but induction does not by itself heat the surface. The bottom is of plastic. This makes the cooker lighter than expected but maybe less durable. You can decide if it is important to you. I found that 2 cups of water came to a rolling boil within 3 minutes at P10. With 10 levels, there is an ability to fine tune the temperature. All in all, this cooker is a nice introduction to induction cooking. I look forward to using this both indoors and out. Just don’t get it wet. ... show more

  • Convenient, effective, and portable
This is the first induction cooktop I've ever tried, and I felt like it was a good first impression. The build quality doesn't feel too sturdy, but I actually don't view this as a negative because the plastic body contributed to making the cooktop lighter than I expected, which is important for portability. I have cooked several times on this (only with stainless steel though), and just like an electric burner it takes a few times to fine tune the power levels, but once I got used to it it performed very well and in my opinion exceeded my electric burners. My only critique of this is that it did not come with an instruction manual. Even though it's not very hard to figure out the buttons, an instruction manual would be helpful to those who aren't as familiar with cooking technology. ... show more

  • Okay for the RV
When we travel in our RV we set up an outdoor kitchen with camping equipment. I wanted a burner that didn't run on a portable butane or propane bottle. Since we have power this single burner induction cooktop looked like a decent option. The one I received arrived with a crack in one corner but that doesn't affect the actual cooking surface. The listing is very clear about what pans are compatible and I tried it with my cast iron. It took a bit to get up to the full heat. I tested it with a handheld thermometer with my gas range one day and this induction burner on another and it definitely took longer to reach the same cooking temp. The whole thing is plastic and not made for heavy use. For me, This is still a great option to have in my RV, an easy size to store and better than a portable camping cooktop. ... show more
