This unit is fairly compact and very easy to use. The tip over switch also works well. The fan is a Vornado design so the warm air is easily projected across the room. I am only heating a master bathroom and it works very well in this relatively small space. The thermostat turns the unit off when the desired heat setting is reached. The only issue I've found is that the handle is very slippery. I corrected this with a piece of stair tread tape. ... show more

This was my first foray into anything produced by Vornado and my first impression after the first couple hours of use was no less than pleasing. Firstly it’s a personal heater, let’s clear that up. If you’re looking for a unit with more heating power, consider Vornado’s complete line or “whole room heaters” using vortex or V-Flow technology. The units intended purpose is to heat the air around you and keep you comfortable in say like an office cubicle or general workspace where you would be mostly stationary. With Vornado being considered a more premium brand this is a pretty good entry level product to familiarize yourself with their vortex air circulation. The unit did a great job at fighting the chill that usually surrounds me when I’m at work in my desk and I was pleasantly surprised with how cozy and comfortable I felt during the first couple hours of use. Let’s talk noise.....you can definitely hear it running but I’m my opinion it’s a fairly pleasant sound and there is no speed control, just one. It definitely makes some white noise. Some may find this unit fairly noisy compared to Vornado’s larger more powerful line of heaters. Place the heat selector in the middle position and it works as a fan. Air flow is good and gentle and provides a soft yet pleasant current of air. I was okay with less airflow because my desk fan was just too strong at times. Let’s talk power...you get three options: Fan only, low heat, and high heat. Low draws 375 watts and high draws 750 watts. (750 is a low setting on the more premium models where 1500 watts is the max output.) 375 just feels a little warm which I tried for a few minutes and switched to the 750 option which I love better. Not too hot and not too cool it was just perfect. It’s advertised as cool to the touch which I didn’t think so it doesn’t get hot on the sides but it does get considerably warm so keep it unobstructed on all ends. Heat output is perfect and I would highly recommend this product for anyone who wants to keep a small space a little more cozy. Bottom line since it uses the vortex technology Vornado is famous for it does a great job circulating the heat around you and not just at you. Using it as a standard one speed fan alone was also pleasant. If you want a great example at what this company is then start with their entry level product line. One last thing. Out of the box with it has that new “vinyl” like smell and the power cord is very stiff but very well constructed. I’m not sure how long it will take to rid itself of the new vinyl like smell when I was running but I’m sensitive to certain odors and it gave me a little bit of a headache and nauseous feeling in my stomach for the first couple hours while it ran. The initial burning smell you get from first start up only lasts a couple minutes. Maybe run it in an open area for the first time and see if that help it bake off the odor. Some might say vinyl smell or some might say it has a Sharpie permanent marker like smell. Just an FYI. ... show more

The Vornado VH5 is an attractive and compact heater. It's meant as a personal heater, rather than a space heater, but could also work to keep a very small room (perhaps 75 square feet) somewhat warm. VERY COMPACT: The Vornado VH5 is roughly 8 inches high by 7 inches wide by 6 inches deep. So it's compact. LOWER ELECTRICAL DRAW: This heater can be run using 750 watts or 375 watts of heat. I like the lower wattage, and that it can't be set to a level that would increase the electrical load. But of course, it produces less heat than a higher-watt heater. So be sure that fits your needs. (If you don't need such a compact size, the Vornado MVH Heater offers three wattage levels. We've been using one happily for years.) EFFECTIVE AT HEATING: I found the heater effective, for the watts it uses. The Vornado fan system works well. However, if you're using it in a large, drafty space it might not work as well. ATTRACTIVE DESIGN: I find the design of the Vornado heaters to be attractive. Some models offer color options, which is nice, but this model currently does not. NOT A SILENT HEATER: The biggest surprise was that this heater is somewhat noisier than I expected. It seems like it is fan noise from moving air, and maybe that's necessary with the compact design. But given that this heater is something people are likely to be fairly close to - you'd need to be 3-5 feet away for it to work as a personal heater - the noise may not work for everyone's situation. (Unless you want some white noise.) NO THERMOSTAT: Like the other Vornado personal heaters, the VH5 doesn't have a thermostat. That makes some sense, as this isn't designed to keep and hold a space at a temperature. It's also one less part that can break. But be advised, if you had planned to use this to maintain a temperature in a small room. TIP PROTECTION: If the heater is tipped, a cutoff switch will turn off the heater. I'm a big fan of Vornado, I own two other heaters and one large fan. They work really well at heating and moving air, and are surprisingly quiet. The VH5 wasn't what I'd expected. The Vornado VH5 is fairly similar in design to the somewhat quieter Vornado VH202 Heater and the VH203 (in a champagne color). Those models may be a better choice for some people, if you want a slightly quieter heater, that's also slightly shorter in height but has a base that's a little larger. The VH5 seems to have a little larger fan and perhaps more airflow, but makes a little more fan noise as a result. I've attached some pictures showing the sizes of the three Vornado heaters: - the MVH is about 11 x 10.5 x 9 inches (height x width x depth) - the VH202 is about 7 x 8 x 7 inches - the VH5 is about 8 x 7 x 6 inches ... show more

    • Minor glitch
The space heater is fine for its intended use of heating the workspace around a computer or writing desk. Perfect for situations of user being cold while others in same room are too warm. Everything electrical and mechanical works as advertised. It is more attractive than former metal box-shaped models. The two soft pads on bottom that prevent sliding or scuffing furniture each came off. One fell off about the second day of use and the other a week later.
