  • Much better
Color: Black Style: Remote Control Pattern Name: Fan
Definitely an improvement. My bedroom gets so hot in the summer, even with the AC going. It’s on the north-west corner of our house but heats up like crazy during the day. My alarm clock has a built-in thermometer and the room is usually at least a few degrees warmer than the rest of the house. It can get over 80°F in there at night. (Even in the dead of winter, 20°F outside, I often have to crack the window for a few hours, or it’ll be too hot to sleep.) This fan looks nice. It’s decently quiet. And moves air nicely. I usually use the exhaust setting just to keep the air moving. But in the evening, I’ll switch it to draw cool air in for a few hours before bed. The foam gap-inserts meant to fill in the gaps around the sides are just… dumb. The way they’re designed, they aren’t universal and they don’t fit my window AT ALL. There are 3 different sizes, but if the space you need to fill isn’t exactly in full-inches, you’re going to have a gap of whatever remaining the partial inch happens to be (1/4, 1/2, 3/4” etc). Mine has about 1/2” gap, so I had to space out the inserts carefully. Because they don’t fit my window, they don’t want to stay up either; they kept falling back against the screen behind the fan. Took me ages to get it all in and “stable.” The thermostat is handy. But… it has issues. I don’t know where it’s placed but I’m not sure it’s in a very good spot: The inside temperature can be 80°F, but if the outside temp is 59°, the fan won’t kick on because it’s reading the outside temp. The auto-fan temperature setting also only goes down to 60°. So while your room may be too hot, if it’s only 59° outside, it’ll be reading the external temperature and won’t automatically turn on. That’s a bit annoying. Where I live, the nighttime temperatures often get quite low, even if it was 90°F all day. Pros: It’s versatile, looks nice, the noise isn’t too disruptive, and it’s pretty powerful. It works well and is a pretty good improvement over the standard, dual-blade window fans on the market. The remote control is also very handy. (It’s part of what tipped the scale between this fan and another brand, tbh.) And the manufacturer warranty is pretty decent. (I also bought an extended warranty though.) Cons: The gap-filler inserts are really only suitable for whatever, very specific window the company used as a template. If you have older or “non-standard” (whatever “standard” even is right now), expect to have to fuss with them and probably have gaps due to their limitations. (I’m not sure why they decided that the usual accordion-style extenders were less preferable. Feels a bit like they decided “reinventing the wheel,” so-to-speak, was a “good idea” in this case. It usually isn’t.) Finally, the thermostat is placed in such a way that it often reads the temperature outside, instead of the temperature inside the room you want to regulate. If it’s too hot inside, but the outdoor temperature is low, the thermostat becomes useless; you’ll have to switch it to manual operation. ... show more

  • Low profile, high volume leaves more window to look through, and super quiet.
Color: White Style: Remote Control Pattern Name: Fan
I use fans in my Michigan home during the summer almost exclusively mainly because I do not have central air. This means that through the years I go through fans because of wear through normal use. I have been using the number one rated Bionaire Twin reversible window fan , which has some faults but small in comparison to the consistent service. When one of the fans stopped working it was time to purchase a new unit I thought I would give the Vornado low profile transom a test. I own other vornado standard fans and they are reliable and really blow! but in a good way. I set up the Transom as directed and to my surprise it also really blows, and with a much greater velocity, also has a temperature range setting, four speeds, it is reversible meaning it also sucks the air out of the room very efficiently. THIS UNIT IS SUPER QUIET, and not only does it have a remote but it can also be ran manually off of the front panel( which is super important for when the batteries run out or you loose the remote ) . You can feel the force of the air to the center of the room and did I mention that this UNIT IS SUPER QUIET? Lastly I now have the window 75% closed which means I can look out at the yards without moving the curtains or looking above the unit. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF NEGATIVES, but I can live with them. The panel lights up on the front while operating it, showing the parameters, but once you are in the run mode and made all of your adjustments the panel will only illuminate the on/off button. The other manufacturer would display the current temperature all the time. I could be wrong about this, seeing how I only had this fan for a day and have yet to read the instruction manual and the other negative and I think the design is the reason, you cannot redirect the airflow towards the ceiling or the floor, and I thinks that is due to 1. The design is what old school would call a squirrel cage, it's cylindrical in shape like a furnace fan and provides the greatest amount of air flow per volume of air also 2. Since it is as compact as it could physically be, then you sacrifice of the directional louvre's that are on most other fans blade type fans, but you gain in air velocity. ... show more

  • So close to perfect. (Also, make sure it fits your window)
Color: White Style: Remote Control Pattern Name: Fan
In some ways this is the most frustrating kind of product: it's so close to perfect that the single flaw drives you insane. I'll get the flaw out of the way first. There's no way to aim the airflow. There's a narrow horizontal "beam" of air. So if you are using it as an intake fan you are going to have a narrow beam of air hitting you directly or missing you entirely. It would have been relatively easy, I'd imagine, to add some kind of small adjustment so you can angle the beam upward or downward if desired. As for everything else, this fan is great. Runs quiet. Moves a ton of air. Four selectable speeds. Converts from intake fan to exhaust fan at the tap of a button. The included tiny remote is excellent, but everything is also controllable from the fan's front panel in case you lose the remote. The fan is pricy, but actually feels like a *more* expensive product than the price suggests. Another great feature is that you can (depending on window geometry) leave the screen window closed. Helps keep bugs out. One reason I was willing to take a chance on this fan was my great experiences with other Vornado fans over the last 10 years. Pricy but worth the cost in my experience. ... show more
