We have an older home that still uses window AC units. The front room, our family room, is South-facing. The windows don't accommodate AC units, and there isn't electric in the ceiling for a ceiling fan. So it's the hottest room in the house and has no natural air movement. To get cool air in the room, we've been using a fan to push air from the adjoining dining room; which does have an AC unit. We've used a Honeywell Turboforce and a Lasko tower fan. Truth be told, they didn't move a lot of air and consequently didn't make much of a difference. The Vornado 660 is a true night and day difference from the other fans! It moves far more air, and the Vornado air circulator design truly works. We have the fan pointed in direction where no one sits, and you can still feel indirect air movement anywhere in the room. So the room IS cooler, and it FEELS cooler due to air movement. This might be the first summer I'll actually be comfortable in our family room. As a bonus, the Vornado is quieter on it's 3 of 4 setting than the others were at 2 of 3 and 3 of 3 settings. (This is coming from someone who is very noise sensitive, btw.) I may not even have to use the Vornado's highest speed. But it still wouldn't be louder than the others at full blast, and the air movement literally blows the others away. (See what I did there?) Lastly, I was little worried about size because the 660 is the largest model of the series. I ordered it anyway because I was thinking about noise and figured I'd rather have a bigger fan working on a lower speed to keep the noise down. As I've mention, noise isn't an issue. Turns out, the size isn't either. It's really not obtrusive at all; maybe 50% bigger than a basketball. In sum, I'm really happy with this fan. Trust me: spend a little more and get something that really works, the Vornado.

SO MUCH BETTER air circulation than inexpensive stand fan I bought last year from big box store. Like night and day - you get what you pay for. I don’t have air conditioning so good fan circulation is important. This Vortex small fan was reasonably priced and arrived promptly. The angle of air direction is adjustable vertically and it does tend to “stray” upward a little on the highest setting, but that doesn’t affect the efficiency. It is too noisy for sleeping when on high, but the medium setting noise level is similar to a white noise machine. Cleaning is not going to be easy. I will consider getting another one for another part of the house if this one continues to work out. I would recommend this to others. Time will tell if it lasts.

I am so happy with this fan! It definitely cools you down and provides much needed relief during hot summer nights. It's small which is convenient for me but it's also very powerful. I have it on the floor a good distance away from my bed but I still get the full feel of the cold air even on the middle setting. It feels like sleeping next to an air conditioner. It is a bit loud, especially on the highest setting but that doesn't bother me.

You can see my old review of this item below, but a little over a year after purchasing this item I have to update my score from 2/5 to 4/5. I rent and my landlord doesn't care about energy efficiency or insulation so: (a) I have a crummy window AC that's installed incorrectly in my wall (and it doesn't drain properly (AND it's not rated for this size room anyway!)); (b) my windows are not insulated and so a large, old hurricane window (110" x 50") gets 12 hours of direct sunlight each day; and finally (c) my lease forbids me from doing anything about either of these problems. I live in Miami, so (needless to say) my apartment gets uncomfortably warm during the summer. But yesterday I came out into my living room, where this circulator hangs out, and it was just unbearable. I couldn't figure out why immediately, but then I noticed that this circulator was off (there was probably a power outage -- this device has a surge protector in it and needs to be reactivated after any flicker). I turned this back on amd within an hour my apartment was back to what I expected -- too warm for true comfort but cool enough to put the ambient temperature out of my mind. So whatever my initial complaints, it is clear to me now that this circulator does, indeed, help cool my apartment. I stand corrected, and happily so. [Old Review] SYNOPSIS Please don't dismiss my review by supposing that I tried to use this differently than intended. This DOES NOT work as intended. The "air tunnel" this fan creates travels less than 10 feet before the airflow feels equal to ambient. My Amazon Basics fan does a better job circulating air than this overpriced floor fan (ahem, "air circulator"). Difficulty Level - How Hard Was This To Use? [_] Beginner [_] Novice [_] Competent [_] Advanced [_] Expert Build Quality [_] This felt very poorly designed, and I recommend against buying it. [_] This felt poorly designed, but "your mileage may vary." [_] This felt like it was adequately designed, with no big pros or cons. [x] This felt like it was well designed, with more pros than alternatives. [_] This felt like it was excellently designed, and I recommend buying it. With respect to form factor, weight, and aesthetics this is clearly a premium-tier item. I can only give it 4/5 on my own scale because I would not recommend buying this in general. This fan puts out more air on medium than my previous one did on high! Yet, it's not overly loud. I need sound when I sleep and on medium, the noise level is even and perfect. On high, it would be a bit much for me, but perhaps perfect for others. With all the power and ability to move air, it takes up very little table space and is easily adjustable. Best fan I've ever had!!

The fan does exactly what it is supposed to do, which is push as much air around the room as possible. It does this as well and probably better than any fan I’ve ever owned. I decided to clean it about 10 months after purchase, and it was a serious pain in the hindquarters. The screws are set in such a way that it is impossible to see what you are doing and putting it back together was way more difficult than it should be. All told, a job I thought would take 5 minutes took almost 40. So 5/5 stars for functionality but 2/5 stars for maintenance. Thanks for letting me vent.
