  • Awkward, but Effective
I've been dealing with an Achilles bone spur and my physical therapist recommended this type of night splint. I had tried a few other designs that just did not work for me. This was very reasonably priced and seemed to have good reviews, so I bought it. I do have to say that that my physical therapist was correct when she told me these are not the most comfortable things to sleep in. I had to remove the extra toe wedge within the first half hour of wearing it. The brace is nicely padded. There are no hard, rough areas that are directly exposed to my skin. There are three adjustable buckles to hold your foot in place. I did find that the padded area on the front slid around during the night until I slid them as close to the buckle as I could. Since the Velcro attaches to this padded slide, this seemed to minimize the sliding. I also found that as a side sleeper, the angle of the ankle strap just put too much pressure on my ankle so I had to loosen the strap a bit to make the brace more comfortable to sleep in. I think this brace is about as comfortable as this type of equipment can be. In spite of the awkwardness of sleeping in the brace, it really seems to have helped the pain of my heel. I noticed an improvement the first morning. My physical therapist also suggested wearing this while watching TV or sitting for a couple of hours if I couldn't tolerate sleeping in it all night. I really am getting used to sleeping in it and don't have that horrible heel/foot pain when I first walk on it in the morning or get up to use the bathroom at night. The pain is diminished for most of the day. You might also want to know that the bottom surface has a small pad of foam rubber with a light texture that makes it more comfortable/secure to walk on for short distances. I have also found that the buckles on the straps work easily so I can just unbuckle them in the morning, then clip them back in place at night with minimal adjustments needed. I really do recommend this brace for Achilles bone spurs and tight plantar fascia problems. I wish I hadn't wasted money on trying other braces that just didn't work. ... show more

  • Let me wake up pain free, definitely worth the price and having to store the ugly things.
I have pain from Plantar Fasciitis in both feet, but I figured I would only buy one brace at first to see if it works. My left foot is always the bad one, so I figured I would start there. Yesterday I wore less than ideal shoes during the day, after a week when I had been standing and walking more than usual. By nightfall, my right foot was hurting mildly, and my left foot hurting moderately. I put the brace on my left foot, fell asleep, and woke up eight hours later to moderate pain in my right foot (it's always worse in the morning), and miraculously, NO pain in my left foot. Seriously: it made my bad foot painless in one night. Of course I'm not saying I'm cured - there have still been twinges during the day - but waking up pain free is such an amazing improvement. Now for the bad: my five star review is because I am so blown away by the results, not because the product is perfect. I wear a women's ten, and so bought the large like the description recommends. This meant I had to tighten the straps quite a bit, which doesn't leave much room for the velcro to stick, which is what keeps the strap position steady when you buckle and unbuckle the brace. At the moment, it looks like I might have to adjust the straps whenever I put it back on, which is the last thing you want if you need to pee in the middle of the night. I am thinking about buying some extra velcro, so I can extend the part that sticks and solve it myself. I am also considering trying a medium when I buy one for my other foot, but I'm worried that if the hard calf rest part is narrower then it might be too uncomfortable. It's certainly bulky, but that seems necessary for it to work. I found it comfortable enough to sleep the whole night in right away. I sleep on my back, and didn't want my the platic part digging into my calf, so I put a pillow under my knee and upper thigh, which seemed to help a lot. I would also suggest you try keeping the straps a little less tight than you might think you need. You don't need to keep your foot at a very severe angle for it to improve. And if it's cutting off circulation, then something is definitely not right. Edit May 22, 2018: I have not used these constantly since buying them, the problem healed and then unfortunately came back again when I wore out my old inserts. But I have worn them every night for months now, and they are still effective and going strong. I now have one for each foot, and they were definitely worth the money. ... show more
