It is worth having because it does have information that i cannot find. Bow rehairing is a subject that I cannot find from searching. It has bridge setup, peg reaming, and other subjects on setups. But the parts that are missing is crack repair, bass bar replacement, fixing the neck. Even if those are missing I am happy with this book and will be keeping it for reference.

I am not a repair expert. I found a couple of old violins at a flea market for a few bucks that needed a lot of tender loving care and thought it would be fun to try to repair them. I used this book as a guide and found it very helpful. I did bring both violins back to life but I have to laugh since I spent much more than they are worth on the tools and materials but I had great fun doing it. Now I can keep an eye out for other orphan violins that need some loving care.

This is a pretty good book, but a large part of the book is about bow rehairing, which in my opinion is not exactly violin repair, and as such, I feel it should be treated separately. It does do a good job explaining basic violin setup including making and/or setting up the bridge, installing and maintaining the pegs, repairing and setting up the fingerboard, making and installing the sound post, and the nut and saddle. A better title might be " Bow Rehairing and Basic Violin Set-up and Maintenance." I'm sure if I ever decide to try my hand at bow rehairing, it will prove to be an even more useful book. If your looking for a book on how to fix and repair cracks and things of that nature, you should probably look elsewhere. With all that said, I do find it to be a very good guide to setting up and maintaining your own violin, which is a huge part of having a violin. I had a terrible time finding one good resource for getting my violins in optimal playing condition and this book has helped me greatly. I have learned to setup and maintain my own violins so I am not at the mercy of local repair shops and such. This will also save you a lot of money.For about the price of one good setup at your local strings place, you can buy the few specialty tools and start learning to do it yourself. It is also very enjoyable and rewarding to me.

When I started turning pages with skepticism {like what's this guy know?}, I became slowly captivated by what I was seeing and reading. Each page turned lead to something better. Things people need to know about getting it right. The plug cutting directions were difficult for me to follow. It made more sense after seeing Ed Heron-Allens' frog/tip diagrams in his book. I tried the fingerboard leveling advice Mr. Atria offers here. I had what he calls a "hill". After inducing the 1mm gap clearance/straight edge method as he says to do all I can say is yes, heck of a difference. I made the frog holder, too. I'll need it. More about the first read through- as soon as I was through reading the neck reset section, I must say this manual had my fullest attention, all skepticism gone, and I'm waiting to see what's next. Then it starts showing violin specs. What a drag, could there be more? Nope. This will work if you need to keep your instruments/bows in good playing condition. If there's a better book on the subject I won't need it. Uncle Duke

Mr. Atria did an excellent job in Part I on bow rehairing. There were sufficient details explained to accomplish this task not only for the violin but viola and cello. In steps where there was a difference among the three (dimensions etc.) each instrument was covered. However, Part II Instrument Repair and Restoration seemed to be written in an extremely abbreviated fashion unlike the first part. Worse yet was that other than a gatuitous line drawing of the viola and cello peg box (showing the string names; why?) there is no mention of viola nor cello. The appendix with a few viola/cello measurements is of no value for part two. Had Mr. Atria completed Part II as he had done Part I this would be a very valuable book. Henry Stobel's Useful Measurements for Violin Makers covers viola and cello (and Bass) completely including templates but is not a well presented as Mr. Atria's book. If Mr. Atria completes his book and produces a version two of it, I will line up to buy it. But for now it is only of value for the violin.

The book is well written and contains a lot of useful information. The reason for 4 stars, and not 5, is that the illustrations are not totally clear in some areas. They are primary simple line drawings and require some study, and knowledge before hand to interpret. This is only a minor shortcoming.
