The tool is a great value for the money in the sense that the castings of the tool are good quality and you get 5 blades. The blades are a nice hard steel with a good carbon content and the screws and threads function as there should. The bottom of the shave is painted and the paint leaves black streaks until it wears off (mine wore off the first night, so it doesn’t take long). Here is the big one, the steel is good quality but very rough when it comes to its grind. I spent the better part of an hour flattening then sharpening the blade and once it is done, it works like a dream. If you aren’t someone good a sharpening, you may want to get something more expensive that requires less initial set up; but if you’re comfortable sharpening and tuning, the tool is a fantastic value itself plus you get 4 extra blades of a good steel you could make something else out of ... show more

This item is supposed to be a spokeshave handle with 4 blades. Only the 4 blades were in the package. There was no handle in the package. ‘Nuff said.

One of the screws that holds the cutter is loose in its socket. The tapping of the socket into the base of the tool was poorly executed. I think I will keep the tool rather than return it because the rest of the tool seems to be of good quality. Also, I see no reason why I would be removing this screw so, I might epoxy it into its socket. ... show more

I haven't had time to use it because the bottom is painted and I didn't want to extrude black paint into my project. Sheesh. The picture of how flat the face is (dings on the left hand side included) is after 1/2 hour of sanding with a carborundum stone. Not very flat but fixable,

This spoke-shave worked great to shape the handle on my joiners mallet project. The extra blades are a bonus, because sharpening them looks like it could be a chore. The only con is that the black paint rubs off onto the workpiece, perhaps an initial sanding or treatment with acetone or mineral spirits would resolve that. In my case, this wasn't a big deal, and hand sanding the workpiece took it right off. ... show more

Bought this anticipating needing to tune it up a bit, but did not expect so much extra casting material on the sole. Blade was reasonably sharp. Doesn't quite operate the way the Stanley it's a copy of does, but, after flattening the sole, and sharpening and honing the blade, it does work just fine. This is useless! That’s what they should change the name to. Cheaply made, tried it in a small piece of hickory to round a corner with the grain and it still just chops out. Nothing smooth about this at all. If you use it on maybe balsa wood?? Perfect! But other wood... forget it! Junk, returned it
