We've had automatic brewers and we've had cheaper espresso makers and mostly been disappointed, particularly the espresso makers. The thing is, my OH likes her coffee differently than I do. I like my espressos and other extra strong coffees like a long, while my OH favors the lattes and cappuccinos. So, lately we've mostly gone for one or another of the various manual coffee ways to brew individual coffees to our liking. I figured it was time to make at least one aspect of my life easier and get one machine that could make all the kinds of coffee that we each like and automate the process. At this price point, my expectations weren't very high, but I've seen the reviews on their other machines, so I felt reasonably confident that this was going to be just fine. And, it is. More than fine. This machine makes a real espresso. A good one too. Not too bitter. Smooth. Good body. Nice crema. Really, I'm kind of surprised at how well it does on the espresso and double espresso. Most coffee shops don't make an espresso that well. The Americano is a bit thin for my liking, but then again, I do prefer my coffee to etch metal. I've even tried out the cappuccino and latte settings; something I'd never have considered in the past. Much to my surprise, I really like them too. Who knew? Tomorrow, I test out the long. I'm expecting that to be the sweet spot for me. I've been saving it for last, though I'm not really sure why. It's worth mentioning that the settings can also be customized. Want your espresso to extract a little longer or shorter? Easy peasy. You can dial the presets in how you like them. Importantly, you can also reset it all to the factory settings if you decide that it was better before you started tinkering. The milk frother works really well, btw. I like that it's adjustable, so you can dial in how frothy you like it. And, the clean setting is a real gift, since keeping that part of the machine would be difficult otherwise. It sounds silly to say that I love a cleaning setting, but I do. I also really like that you can froth milk separate from making a latte or cappuccino. So, if you need more, you can have it at the push of a button. You want to make a fancy hot chocolate? This machine has got your back. I should mention that the exterior housing is plastic and the machine feels lighter than I would have expected. But, at this price point it really isn't reasonable to expect 10 pounds of steel. The important parts that deal with the pressure and the coffee are heavy cast metal or steel. It's sharp looking and it does a bang up job. Fits in great with our other appliances too. There are separate heaters for the espresso and the milk frother, which speeds things along and ensures that one process doesn't suffer because the other is also running. The pump achieves the pressure you need to make a real espresso and they've included all the bits you need to be up and running.

I am experienced with a much more expensive espresso machines, so I was curious what a more economical machine could do. The quality of the material is what I expect for a $99 unit... good enough. There is a bit of a learning curve with dosing and tamping. The booklet gives a little bit of guidance, but you really need to figure that on your own. It suggests you use freshly ground beans that are not more than a week old... so you will need a separate grinder or purchases freshly ground beans. That being said, I used ground espresso coffee that had a sell-by date, not a roasted nor ground date. They suggest you fill the portafilter up to 2mm from the edge before tamping. I usually go with weight, and will have to figure a good measure long term. My pucks have been a bit watery, so I still have things to figure out. The scoop and tamping tool work well enough. I like that the frother lets you toggle between froth for cappuccinos and for lathes. It's a different between steaming temperature and the amount of foam. I do see a bit of water when I begin frothing milk, but I am not sure if that is normal or from running the machine with water first to clean it. I do like that the milk tank can be removed and stored in the refrigerator so I don't need to worry about filling it with an exact amount of milk. I can just fill it and use it over several days. I find it fairly easy to produce the drink I want by simply pushing the desired button. So far, all the drinks I have made have been generally good with no harsh bitter or other bad tastes. I like that the unit heats up quickly and you can warm your cups on top. While it is flexible with the height of the cup you use, the width is rather limited because of the presence of the milk tank. Clean up is fairly easy and the water tank in back is large to cover several days' drinks. I have used it for a week now and am overall pleased with it. There is a bit of a learning curve, but I like that it can customize the drinks for me with just a touch of the button. I am puzzled by the power button... it seems to blink when you power it off. Maybe that is the way it is, or I am overlooking something obvious. But for now, the only way I can get the power button to stop blinking when powered down is to unplug the machine.

This espresso machine was very easy to set up and start using. The instruction brochure is clear and easy to understand, so I had everything running in no time. One of my favorite features is the milk reservoir. It's easy to remove and clean, which makes a big difference for everyday use. We even kept unused milk in the reservoir in the refrigerator for two days, and it was still perfectly fine afterward. The machine makes it simple to prepare different coffee drinks with the push of a button. Everything feels very straightforward, even if you're not an espresso expert. I also like the size. It doesn't take up much counter space and is small enough to fit comfortably in almost any kitchen. Despite its compact footprint, it still looks stylish and modern. Overall, this is a user-friendly coffee machine that looks great, is easy to maintain, and makes a nice addition to the kitchen.

I am learning so much about espresso making with this machine! I found a delicious Italian bold roast espresso grind coffee on Amazon, and off I went to "pulling shots". I even experimented with making a cappuccino, and had success on the first try! There is a wealth of knowledge on line if you want to tweak your technique and tools, but out of the box this machine is good to go, and makes a delicious cup of coffee provided you have the correct beans and grind consistency. Highly recommended for first timer baristas, and the best part is it doesn't take up any more space than a standard style counter top coffee maker. BTW the filter basket size is 51mm if you want to add accessories.
