Let me start by saying I have considerable experience in enterprise networking, my entire smart home / home office environment was built using Ubiquiti products, and I've been a fan of the portfolio because of the many enterprise features they bundle into a responsible price point. So with the pandemic resulting in a greater reliance on internet for home-based work and school this seemed like a perfect add-on to provide backup internet with plug-and-play interoperability. I really liked the concept of a low monthly recurring fee with additional costs tied to consumption only 'if needed and used' (as an alternative to the high monthly recurring fee from having a second ISP) To be fair, integration and activation were simple and straightforward - however, after a few months I can only say that the concept is great, but costly service fees and limited control kill it. Specifically, - The service is locked to AT&T at a rate of ~$15/ month, which includes one Gigabyte of data transfer* while data transfer beyond that is an additional ~$15/GB* (* I understand that there is an introductory promotion right now that this fee is temporarily reduced to ~$5/mo) - While you can control which networks / VLANs are allowed to use the backup internet (for example, if you have a network dedicated to video cameras, you can prevent streams from that network running up usage), you can't control what triggers a fail-over or a fail-back, or the times you want LTE backup to be active, which are in my opinion are essential given the costly usage fees. By way of example, I noted frequent transfers to LTE backup in the middle of the night. As best as I could tell, those resulted from minor internet 'blips' that lasted some seconds (a few missed pings?) and would've otherwise gone unnoticed. While the LTE was hyper-sensitive to fail-over it, at times it would nonetheless take a good while to fail back to my regular internet, running up LTE usage during that time. This most recently happened during my nightly cloud backup - and during that short 1am blip I wouldn't otherwise cared about, I quickly ran up ~2 GB of LTE usage. Unfortunately, there's no way to configure failover to trigger occur during specific times (i.e. during school / business hours) or to be less sensitive, such as if the internet is out for at least 1 minute, or 5 minutes, rather than for some seconds. Also, the options to force a manual failover are limited - I figured I could disable the LTE device in the UniFi controller to prevent failovers to it, then re-activate it anytime I was actually impacted by an outage - but disabling the device didn't seem to stop failovers to it. The only way I could stop those was by blocking traffic at the switchport. Similarly, the only way I could force a manual failback was to reboot the LTE. Now the UniFi controller does allow you to set a monthly data usage limit between 1GB and 20GB (in 1GB increments), however it will only *warn* you when you exceed that limit but won't *block* further usage until that limit is exceeded by 2GB - so if you set a 1GB limit, you can potentially be billed for 3GB of LTE usage ($45) per monthly cycle - the circumstances I essentially woke up to. All these arbitrary limitations seem to benefit Ubiquiti / AT&T while degrading its value and requiring a lot of effort to manage around. I'm already looking at alternatives. Good luck!

I sell and install a lot of ubiquity products. I was hoping this product would be as advertised and a great product to sell my clients. I was very disappointed that their software intentionally does not disconnect from the cellular as they charge for the data you use once your Internet fails. it would not automatically turn off and switch over to the regular internet. I call you big lead text support and they basically told me where sorry it's not working the way you would like it to the agent also admitted that is supposed to automatically switch back as they advertised but since it doesn't they will end up making millions of dollars in extra revenue because you have to physically disconnected from power in order for it stop occurring data charges.

Couldn't for the life of me adopt this to either a local unifi controller or an aws controller

with the days of remote learning under $10.00 a month to keep the kids in class when all ease feels. I did need to get an antenna for the unit as the signal in the house was weaker than I would have liked. EDIT: after a real fiber cut from a contractor, with in seconds of the outage, the LTE picked up running 30 devices flawlessly .
