    • The good, the bad and the ugly

Update: 12/5/2020 - Switching to 2d mapping fixed a few issues. Unfortunately even with 2d mapping the playlist continues to fail. I have to factory reset the lights almost daily as the playlist gets errors then self wipes. Once that happens it can’t be rebuilt without factory resetting the lights. Not very practical especially for the cost. This could be a 5 star product if the app/software worked properly.... The Good - The lights are bright, very colorful and controllable. Everything you want in an LED. I bought these for Christmas as I've been wanting lights that I can control the functions. These have the potential to fulfill that desire. The Bad - Light control is sketchy and some missing features. There are several preset effects which can be edited. The problem is only parts of some can be edited. Some allow editing of speed, brightness and color while others only allow features not including color. Some can be edited and saved, while others can't be saved and if you do, they will overwrite your playlist. For Christmas, some basic features are missing i.e. (twinkle, fade, slow fade, flashing, etc.). Trying to create these effects is cumbersome. The Ugly - Simply put, the app, software and control is terrible. The app crashes constantly. Errors galore. Twinkly support is active in trying to resolve these issues. As stated above, only some of the preset effects can be edited for color. Some allow you to pick color combinations but not make your own color. Some allow you to save a copy while others don't...problem is you don't know which can be edited and which ones can't. There is a favorites area where you can click on a heart to "save" the effect o your favorites. Unfortunately you can add items to your playlist from favorites, you still have to go to the big list of effects and find the ones you want in your playlist. The playlist is horrible. The playlist starts out at 100% and as you add effects it goes down from there. Unfortunately you can't save much. I started off with 5 effects, got an error, deleted them and all of a sudden I could only save 2 effects. I've factory reset the lights and now I can only save 1 effect basically making the playlist pointless. Errors - well the errors are endless. Unfortunately the errors also tend to delete your playlists and saved effects making it a chore any time you want to use the lights as you have to re-create your effects. The idea of these are fantastic, the execution is poor. For the cost, these should work seamlessly as of right now they sometimes work and sometimes they don’t. Hoping for a fix in the near future. The basic features are great and colors are excellent. Even with the issues these are an upgrade for our Christmas tree. ... show more

    • Misleading, but Still Works

After doing A LOT of research on Christmas lights and wanting lights that I could use around the outside of my house for more than just one holiday, I finally found these lights and was so excited about all they could do. However, upon getting this product the pictures and product description is very misleading. Over and over everything you read says it is 157.5' long - that is a not telling the whole truth. What they don't tell you is that it is not 157.5 continuous linear feet. What I discovered is that it is two strands split in half and both strands connect at the plug. Therefore, if you are planning, like me, to run 157.5 continuous linear feet around the eaves or your house, guess again. I even chatted with Twinkly and they confirmed that all their lights are designed this way. Even in you look at the pictures you would think that it is one really long strand and not two shorter strands. So, I had to spend another $50 to buy a really long extension cord so that I could actually use the product. Also, this product does say that it can be used for lights around your house for holidays, but the only option that is given to map the lights is for a Christmas tree. Yes, you can assign each bulb a different color, but it is so hard to select just one light - I wish I could zoom in on the Christmas Tree picture so I could actually pick the one bulb I want to change color on. Now, these lights are pretty cool and they do some pretty amazing things. I do wish the app would allow us all the cool features that the preprogrammed light displays come with. There really isn't a way to make your own motion patterns and stuff like that. Sure, you can take one of their preprogramed displays and change the colors, but it really doesn't give you full control to really do what you want to do with the lights. Even when I chatted directly with the company, they really didn't have an answer regarding how deceptive their pictures and product information pages were - they just kept telling me they would let someone know - ya right! I only gave it three stars because of how misleading the marketing of this product is, but if you can figure out how to get this product to work, it is a great product ... just wish I didn't have to spend more money on top of the $200 to get these lights to work the way I thought they would. ... show more

After seemingly days of moving lights around trying different combinations trying one strand versus two strands I absolutely everything I could think of I contacted customer support they wanted a laundry list of things and their only suggestion was try a iPhone as opposed to an Android I don't own an iPhone I was able to get a friend over with an iPhone and was finally able to map the lights long story short unless you have access to an iOS you're going to have a lot of issues once resolved it is absolutely amazing what these lights can do. Fix the mapping issues and this is a 5 star all day every day but that seems to be a ongoing theme with reviews ... show more

I really wanted to love these lights. After reading some reviews, I decided to buy them. What a big mistake. I bought 2 sets of the 600 lights for a 10ft tree. I spent the past 2 days trying to get them to work. The first set of 600 was enough to fill a 10ft tree. Mapping the lights with the app was a complete mess. Mapping involved taking pictures with the phone using the app until all lights turned green. The lights have 1 plug with batches of lights connected. The last 20-40 lights on each batch would not map(they stayed red). I tried all different ways but no luck. I also took the lights off and tried to put them on the tree different...still no good. Thought it was the set that was bad so I tried the second set....same issue! Both sets took a fir5mware upgrade when I connected. I'm assuming it was a firmware issue. I emailed seller but since I ordered the item in August, I was not able to return them. Going to contact Amazon and try return them for a refund. I would NOT recommend the lights until the bugs are worked out. ... show more
