I’ve been using the TP-Link TL-SG105 for a few months now, and it’s one of those rare networking devices that just works exactly as advertised — no fuss, no configuration, no random disconnects, no drama. I needed a small, reliable gigabit switch to expand the number of hardwired Ethernet ports in my home office. Between a desktop PC, gaming console, smart TV, and a couple of other wired devices, my router’s limited LAN ports weren’t cutting it. This switch was the perfect solution. Setup: Truly plug-and-play. I took it out of the box, connected the power, ran one Ethernet cable from my router to port 1, and plugged in my devices. Within seconds, all of them had network access and full gigabit speed. No configuration required, no software to install, and absolutely no compatibility issues. Performance: Performance has been flawless. I’ve run speed tests across multiple machines while transferring large files via SMB, and the switch handles it with no sign of slowdown or bottlenecking. Latency is basically non-existent, and it doesn’t introduce any overhead compared to direct-to-router connections. Even when multiple devices are active simultaneously, everything remains stable. Build Quality: The metal housing is surprisingly solid for the price. It’s got some weight to it — not heavy, but definitely not cheap plastic. The navy blue finish looks clean and professional, and the small size makes it easy to tuck away behind a desk or media console. The fanless design is completely silent and hasn’t shown any signs of heat issues, even in a closed cabinet. Additional Notes: Ports are shielded, and the internal build quality looks solid (I took a peek out of curiosity). LED indicators are bright enough to be seen clearly but not blinding, which is great for media rooms or bedrooms. No packet loss or link flapping, even during continuous uptime. Works just as well for casual home use as it would in a small business or lab setup. If you're looking for a no-nonsense, dependable gigabit switch that delivers full-speed connectivity and requires zero maintenance, this is it. I’ve used other switches from Netgear and D-Link in the past, and honestly, TP-Link nailed it with this one — especially at this price point. This is my second time purchasing this switch to expand my home network. I bought the first one back in 2020, and it has performed flawlessly ever since. I haven't had any connection issues. It now includes a loop prevention switch near the power port, which my original unit didn’t have. While this model is unmanaged, it’s truly plug-and-play, perfect for users who just need a simple, effective solution to expand their wired network without configuring settings. It uses minimal power and runs cool even under continuous use. The metal housing feels durable and well-built, making it perfect for both home and small office setups. It can be easily mounted with two nails. Speeds are consistent and stable across all ports, with no drop in performance even during large file transfers or streaming Plex from Synology NAS. These are non-managed switches for Ethernet (plug-and-play) for internet connectivity that is more solid and reliable than wi-fi. You plug in one live connected to the router(/modem) in one port and share Ethernet cables for up to four other devices. One device can be for areas where your wi-fi is too weak or non-existent by taking an old, retired router and turning it into an Access Point for wi-fi bridging. If you live in a home with a crawl space or basement, you can run a cable from under the main floor to your router(/modem) towards the affected area and back up to your main floor. Put a switch there for cabling devices or use an old router as an access point for wi-fi access, as most routers have multiple Ethernet ports on the back side for cable connections for other devices.

The media could not be loaded. 10/23/2024 : (If you choose to replace the fan, you do it at your own risk, and I take no responsibility for the outcome.) I pulled the trigger and installed the Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX 12v 0.05A, and now the unit runs SUPER QUIET. I cannot hear it at all from 10 feet away, and up close it just sounds like a soft hum, quite pleasant, as is the nature of noctua. Since I got this switch on a pretty good deal, I did not want to return it, so I decided to just use a razor to carefully cut the soft rubber on the plug of the original fan's wire, after which it easily came off. Use a small flat screwdriver, or tweezer, to "unclip" the security tab (on the 3-pin header) before pulling the plug, otherwise the entire head will come off. It is easy to unscrew the two screws of the old fan. To install the noctua i just used the larger washer, and i don't think you need even that tbh (or u can just use the screws that come with the noctua fan for the quickest, easiest installation). Now, it runs super quiet with smooth airflow, and should last even longer than with the original fan. I will update if the unit fails, if not, assume it is still running solid. I decided to share because of all the other times when generous people voided their own warranties in order to help the community out. So, I can confirm the noctua fan works, and is very, very, very very quiet. If you choose to replace it, you do it at your own risk, and I take no responsibility for the outcome. 10/22/2024 : I spent a lot of time trying to make this work, because other than the fan it is an excellent unit (talk about weak link in the chain!!). I definitely did NOT open this up, and did NOT peak inside, but from other videos/pics on the internet I found that it has 1 small fan that is plugged into a 3-pin header, so technically it *should* be very easy to switch with a Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX 12v 0.05A. Except, TP-Link in their infinite wisdom, apparently, have also layered some wax/silicon type goo on the 3-pin plug, pretty much ensuring that you void the warranty if you try to switch out the fan. I am so disappointed, given how sensible their other products seem to be made. Why put a server-grade fan in a consumer-grade product? And then make it impossible for the consumer to upgrade the fan to a normal one? Very disappointed. I am seriously debating whether to return and wait for a quiet model in 1-2-3 years, or to just risk the warranty and replace with a noctua. Original: Reading other reviews, I thought it would make a moderate hum, not notable from 15-20 feet away. Nope. The fan is high pitched, the type of cpu fans from 20 year ago (remember those?). This had a good sale on the big sale day so I was eager to get it. Sadly as soon as I plugged it in I knew it was too noisy. It whines for about a minute, then stops, making you think maybe it was just startup noise. But, even with NO load, AND in front of TWO high end fans, the internal fan kicked on and stayed on. Wow. I am so shocked, at this price, these fans are ridiculous!!!! Can only be used in a server room, away from humans. Very unpleasant sound. I have some big NAS hard drives that churn in my living room, and those sound like gentle chugs compared to this. Anyway, I went with the 5-port passive version that was also on sale — that one is working solidly and with my fans should remain within decent temps. I have added a video, excuse the mess, but it actually sounds much louder in real life. The sound it makes up close in the video is what it sounds like from 15 feet away in a quiet room. I unplugged it at the end of the video which is why it stopped. Do not get this 8-port if your have a quiet room or plan to watch movie or sleep or live around it.
