I use travel routers when we're places with the kids where maybe there's a paid captive portal and there's no way I'm paying per device or when I'm frustrated with a steaming service's overbearing travel restrictions and I need to set up VPN. I've been using a GL.iNet GL-MT3000 so this is a direct comparison. That router works very well. I had it set up for three months with VPN connected to a bunch of devices and going through a metal wall and it was fine. How does the TP-Link compare? I have a Deco home mesh so I've used TP-Link stuff and this was a similar setup experience. A tiny bit frustrating when I tried to rename during the initial 1-8 step setup and I think it got stuck rebooting, but not too bad. Good news: - 4/5 easy to connect to wi-fi. The MT3000 admin stuff is laid out a little more complicated, but intuitive. I'd say it's a wash. You can get through it without resorting to looking up instructions just clicking around - 4/5 easy to connect VPN. Once I figured out I was looking for VPN merge then uploading the congif and routing all traffic was two clicks. No problem. You can just toggle it on and off after that. Passes DNS leak tests when on - 5/5 cute tech. Travel routers are adorable devices. Comes with a sticker to write info on, but I always use painter's tape because it comes off easy - 5/5/speed. 60% faster than the MT3000. TP-Link is a leading name brand known for its high quality and competitively priced routers, and this one is no exception. It's less than half the size of a typical home router, and can be powered by an external battery powerbank (not supplied), certain cell phones (check your model specs for support... mine doesn't), or a small ac adapter (similar to what you already use to charge other USB-C devices). So given it's reduced footprint and power consumption, it may not be as potent as your home router, but is portable for securely connecting multiple devices with good range and throughput while on the go. Though I didn't do any bandwidth tests, the range and speed seem solid up to 20 feet, and acceptable up to approx 50 feet, depending on walls and other interference, as well as the sensitivity of the Wi-Fi adapter on your phone, tablet, laptop, etc. This has two small external antennas, which boost range versus the previous model that's limited by a less robust internal antenna, but still is no match for my home router with 4 larger antennas that can cover 2,000 sq ft. But obviously lugging and powering it would be too cumbersome, and that amount of range just isn't necessary in an RV, hotel room, airport, café, etc. Note that this model doesn't have a built-in SIM slot or eSIM, so you can't just add a SIM card for cellular data connectivity if public Wi-Fi sources are slow or sketchy. Instead, you would have to buy a separate third-party SIM dongle, then attach that to the USB port of this router. That's an additional cost (approx $10 to $50), plus it would precariously protrude from the router, impacting compactness and portability. However, adding SIM or eSIM support likely would increase the price, so perhaps TP-Link should consider adding a sister model for those willing to pay extra for the added connectivity flexibility. However, this router can accept tethering from your cellphone, assuming your phone model and cell service allow it. But if they do, most folks would be satisfied just using the phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot instead of dealing with bringing and configuring a travel router. Though the range, security, VPN and other advanced features typically won't be as robust or flexible as the specs of this model. Travel routers can make public internet connectivity more secure, but they can't speed up a slow internet source (like at many hotels, especially abroad). But if you can access a fast internet source (either via Wi-Fi or Ethernet port), then there isn't a need for cellular data via a SIM or eSIM, and this router is an excellent solution for keeping your connection stable, private and secure for as many devices as you're likely to have in a small space. And if your workplace relies on VPN, this model likely is a solid choice given TP-Link's proven technology, though I didn't test those capabilities.

BLUF: COMPACT "TRAVEL" ROUTER PACKS WI-FI 6 SPEEDS AND ROBUST REACHBACK VPN PRIVACY, BUT SOFTWARE QUIRKS REQUIRE A BIT OF PATIENCE. I put this pocket-sized unit into service as a dedicated secure hotspot to handle multiple devices while traveling. I needed something highly portable that could instantly turn sketchy public connections into a private, encrypted network without forcing repeated captive portal logins on every single phone and tablet. If you have a home router or firewall and would like to use VPN, I recommend using WireGuard. I've used both Wireguard and OpenVPN; while OpenVPN is a more mature and widely available protocol, Wireguard is more straightforward to configure and allows you to connect multiple remote devices into a virtual VLAN> PROs ⚡Good Speed: Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 tech delivers snappy throughput that handles concurrent streaming and remote work tasks with ease. ⚡ Travel footprint: The ultra-compact, pocket-friendly design packs folding external antennas that tuck away perfectly into a carry-on bag. ⚡ Robust privacy: Native support for OpenVPN and WireGuard lets you securely tunnel your traffic without installing software on every device. I own a different travel router, an Asus RT-AX57 GO. The Asus is by far more technical, allowing greater control and tweaking via the web UI versus this TP-Link... but do I need that level of complexity for a travel router? This TP-Link made me rethink my setup. I hopped on its WiFi, opened the Tether App (which I already have for my home router), a few clicks and typed some things in and I was already connecter. Where this took about 20s to join the host network, the Asus takes a good minute. Doesn't seem like a huge deal but it gets old fast when you're in a hotel. The Asus will also log into your VPN via token, as does the TP-Link, but again... TP is much faster here. A VPN connection from this router happens in under 10s, the Asus is another minute again as it connects, boots you off, wait for it, then rejoin. For the simplicity the Roam 6, it's incredible. If you just want to plug it in, select the host, and have all your devices rejoin your travel network, this is by far the more painless setup. If you're someone that wants to tinker with every web setting, then the Asus is still the winner... for me, I'm going to switch to the simplicity. Speed is also very good... don't let the WiFi 6 trick you. I know we always want the higher numbers but this thing is plenty fast for streaming multiple devices. If anything, it will likely have more bandwidth than the hotel Internet can supply.

I travel several times a year and stay in a number of hotels while on these trips. Until I acquired this travel router I mainly relied on a VPN service to protect my data and privacy. This VPN service must be installed on all my devices to secure my communications on those devices. This TP-Link travel router is not cheap but neither is it too expensive. It is affordable and reasonably priced for the service it performs. The AX3000 travel router is relatively easy to setup. There are two methods that you can use for the setup - TP-Link Tether App or web browser. I use the Tether app since it's already on my phone to support my TP-Link devices at home. Once you get it properly setup and running, it's out of sight and out of mind. Just connect all your devices to the AX3000 travel browser and all of your communications and transactions will be secure. You do not need to install a VPN service on all of your devices. If you don't already subscribe to a VPN service, you will need to do that and setup the travel router for that service. You can also use the travel router unsecured by VPN service if you are not concerned about security. I highly recommend the AX3000 to simplify your connections and to secure your communications whenever you're traveling.

This tower is a compact solution for frequent travelers who want to securely connect multiple devices under a single network. I like that it's sleek and has a lightweight design that effortlessly fits into carry-on bags and sits easily on a hotel nightstand without taking up much space. I also love its performance, particularly how it bypasses restrictive, per-device hotel Wi-Fi fees by utilizing a single connection to seamlessly link all of my Wi-Fi devices including work and personal phones, laptop, and tablet, and a Chromecast for easy output to many of the TVs all at once. The packaging is simple and minimal, and it includes all necessary components like the power adapter, a USB cable, and an ethernet cable right in the box, making it ready to use immediately. There are some drawbacks I have found, mostly annoyances in its setup and Sunday limitations. While the primary app-based configuration is straightforward, I hate the captive portal authentication process and find it slightly clunky and definitely inconsistent depending on the specific security settings of the hotel network I am trying to use and I find I have to turn off my phone adblocker. Some also mention that while the router can be conveniently powered via a portable power bank, it requires a specific power delivery source to perform reliably, which might mean carrying an extra high-output brick if your existing travel chargers are underpowered.
