Top Amazon Reviews

  • Throw a retirement party for your plunger
I researched and researched and finally decided on the Toto Drake II and am oh-so-happy with my choice. Mind dump on my research and my personal opinion follows: The bottom line: ---------------------- Performance and efficiency on the Toto Drake II are excellent in every regard. I read reviews that did not come to this conclusion, but this toilet is so good they're hard to believe. Ordering online from Amazon was quick & trouble-free - got the toilet in 4 days (and that included Thanksgiving!). Model CST454CEFG CST = gravity (not power assisted) flush 454 = model # C = double cyclone (two outlets create swirling water - no "old-fashioned" rim holes to clog or get dirty) E = e-max (3" flush valve and 2 1/8" trapway with additional siphon power at the trap - stuff disappears!) F = universal height (ADA - in this case about 17 1/4" seat height) G = sana gloss (ceramic glaze - must not use harsh/scratching cleaners. Bonus? You won't need to!) Pros: --------- * flushes EVERYTHING, and quickly (one can only wonder why all toilets don't - isn't this their only purpose?) * refills quickly (even with our old and narrowing galvanized plumbing, after all, it's only a little more than a gallon) * aesthetically attractive shape, if such can be said about a toilet * cleans completely about 99/100 times...I've had to clean it once for slight streaking * has variable flushing ability - if you hold down the handle longer you can get more of the swirling flush (not that I can say it has ever really needed to be held longer - even the quickest flush takes everything away) * I have not used the plunger once * I have not had to flush more than once even a single time Worries from my research that proved unfounded: -------------------------------------------------------------------- * noise - it's not super quiet, and there is a 'glug glug glug' sound at the 'finale', but it is not disturbingly loud and doesn't wake my teen daughter in the next room if it is flushed late at night. I guess this can vary based on your plumbing * seat height - some said the seat height cut off circulation in their legs when they sat for a while. Our family is 5'4" tall and taller and none of us have had any problems with the toilet height, indeed at 5'9" I find it 'just right' * leaking from the tank connection- our 2-piece Toto was installed by a plumber and it does not leak * color - 'colonial white' is the perfect white for my older home. Quite white-but not too white-and not at all dingy or off-colored or yellowed as I had feared - picking colors from a computer screen is scary! * shipping - some people, but not most, have had problems at some of the sites I visited while doing my research, but our toilet was well padded inside the boxes (2) and the boxes were in perfect shape when they arrived on the ups truck - our toilet was in perfect condition possible cons: --------------------- * you can see those big double cyclone holes and the altered rim that makes them work so well, which is maybe not that great of a "look" * doesn't come with a seat (we reused our existing seat as our old toilet was also elongated) * pricey, but never was the axiom more true - you DO get what you pay for other: ---------- * there's a thing called a MaP rating for flushing ability (not rinsing power) ranging from 0 to 1000 (1000 grams, that is, or 2.2 lbs.), the Toto Drake II gets an 800 (I've read anything over 500 is good - and people, please eat your fiber! 2.2 pounds?!?) * this is an elongated toilet, exact specs can be found on the toto website * handle is polished chrome and on the left (right is available) * one year mfg warranty * 12" rough in - the distance from the wall to the bolts * WaterSense - just means uses 20 percent less water than the current federal standard, Toto Drake II meets the standard and uses 1.28 gal/flush - there is a new Drake II using only 1 gal/flush our story: ---------------- The Toto Drake II replaces an American Standard that was in our currently 43 year old house we bought 2 years ago. That toilet had to be flushed multiple times (sometimes 6 or 7 times), took forever to refill, and needed plunging almost daily and at a minimum several times a week. Only 2 people used it regularly. I realize that every brand of toilet (excepting Toto?) has a range of products and ours may have been quite old (but it was an elongated toilet, so certainly not original), but I think the best use for American Standard toilets is media for growing reefs at the bottom of the ocean. I will never purchase an American Standard toilet regardless of what consumer reports says. I complained about that toilet constantly for 2 years whilst battling more urgent life problems (finishing my thesis, etc...). Life is so very good right now...thesis completed and a Toto Drake II in my hall bathroom. Life is sweet! This is a great toilet that I can heartily recommend. When we get to the remodeling we plan to get 2 more Totos and now I won't fret about getting them online. ... show more

  • Great Toilet; comparison with AS Champion 4
Color: Cotton White
We just recently purchased an older house in Northern Virginia. The house is about 45 years old and had the original toilets installed. The old toilets were American Standard 3.5 Gallons per flush toilets. We decided to buy 2 new toilets because we remodeled the downstairs bathroom and didn't like the original canary yellow toilet in the kids bathroom. I extensively researched for months the different toilets. After reviewing Consumer Reports and Industrial Trade magazines I decided to choose either the Toto Drake II elongated or the American Standard Champion 4 one piece elongated. They both have excellent reviews and I was having a difficult time deciding between the two. In the Consumer Reports article they have a Home Depot model and a Lowes model that perform very well and are a CR pick; however when I researched those particular models in more detail, there were many bad reviews on the long term performance of those models; something that the CR article didn't explore in detail. So, even though the cheap HD and Lowes toilets were appealing, I didn't want to have to spend more money and time later to deal with those problems. In the end I chose to get one Toto Drake II elongated and one American Standard Champion 4 one piece. I chose both because each has it's own advantages. I installed the Toto Drake II elongated downstairs. The Toto is a two piece model and only uses 1.28 Gallons per flush. My wife and I both like the look of the toilet and the internal components are high quality. The toilet seat and wax ring was not included with the toilet, but the bowl to tank gasket and bolts were included as well as the bowl to floor bolts and caps. Installing a toilet is fairly straight forward; however I had two issues when installing this toilet. The first issue is that the holes that the bolts go through in the bowl to attach to the toilet flange are elongated and wider than the toilet I took out or the American Standard (AS) Champion that I bought. Because they were slightly larger, the steel washer that goes between the bolt and the bowl actually was a little too small and when I tightened down the bolt the washer bent and went inside the hole. I had to go to HD to buy another bolt kit that had larger and thicker steel washers. It was fortunate that the same kit also had bolts with larger heads on them to attach to the toilet flange. The older ones had smaller heads and would pull through the flange when I tightened it down on the left side of the toilet. In addition, I had to buy another water connector, because the toilet sat higher and the old water connector would not longer reach the toilet bowl. In all, I had to spend an additional 60-70 dollars on top of the purchase of the toilet. This included a wax ring, toilet seat, new water connector, and bolt kit. We put the two-piece toilet downstairs due to the less water usage and we wanted the AS Champion upstairs in the kids bathroom because it was a "one piece" toilet that is supposed to be easier to keep clean and because the AS Champion 4 has been rated number one at the amount of "mass" it is able to flush in one flush. There was a lawsuit against the AS Champion, but this was with the earlier models and not the AS Champion 4 which has had no issues and is highly rated by consumers and professionals. The AS Champion 4 was more difficult to get into place over the wax ring since it was a one piece design and therefore heavier and more difficult to see where the bolts where in relation to the holes, so aligning the toilet over the bolts before placing it on the was ring was difficult. However, the size of the holes were smaller and not elongated as they were on the Toto, so once the toilet was in place, I didn't have any difficulties with the washer size with the bolts that secured the toilet to the floor. The internal components are also of high quality and seem like that they will last a long time. Comparison between the two: Gallons per flush: Toto 1.28 gpf; AS Champion 4 1.6 gpf - Advantage Toto Two piece vs one piece: Toto 2 piece; AS Champion 1 piece - Advantage AS Champion 4 Cost: Toto Drake II was cheaper even after a $75 instant rebate with the AS - Advantage Toto Flush: AS Champion 4: rated as best; advantage AS Champion 4 Looks: Draw; both are fairly good looking Useability: Wife likes the round bowl better than the elongated; I am indifferent; DRAW Material left behind: AS Champion 4 doesn't leave as much material left on the bowl after a sitting. reduces double flush or having to clean after every use. Advantage AS Champion 4. Install: For reasons mentioned above - DRAW Quality: Both high quality, but the Toto Tank cover just sits on top loosely and seems like it could come off easily if bumped. AS Champion 4 is securely attached to the tank. Advantage AS Champion 4 Overall I would highly recommend BOTH toilets. We are happy with both and depending upon where you plan on putting the toilet, they both have distinct advantages. If you can't decide either one, I would go with the AS Champion 4 if you can get the $75 instant rebate that they are offering right now! ... show more
