Good umbrella, holds up to the wind. Keeps the rain off you. What else could you want? Just wish the button also closed it.

  • For Those Who Take Their Rain Gear Seriously
Color: Black
Where I live, umbrellas are a way of life. Everybody walks and if you don’t have an umbrella, you are going to get ridiculously wet when it rains. In New York City, there are two types of umbrella users: those who buy four dollar umbrellas from street vendors and those who buy “good” umbrellas and spend “good” money for them. This Totes umbrella is the latter. The lifespan of a street vendor umbrella is just slightly longer than that of your average mayfly. A street vendor umbrella will last approximately two rain storms, or if there is any wind involved, half a rain storm, if you are lucky. A street vendor umbrella is a spontaneous, “as needed” purchase. It starts to rain, boom you buy the umbrella. The rains stops, boom you forget it when you get off the bus or leave your dentist’s office. Besides the inexpensive price, these umbrellas are lightweight, small, and easy to tuck into a handbag or briefcase. In contrast, this Totes umbrella is serious business. It is securely made, with strong spokes and a water repellant finish. It is surprisingly heavy for a collapsible. This is NOT an umbrella you want to forget in the back of a taxi cab. You want to own it for years or until the next nor’easter blows it inside out and it goes flying down the street. This umbrella has a button on the handle which “auto” opens but unfortunately does not close the mechanism. There is an elastic loop attached to the handle which allows the umbrella to perhaps be hung from a hook. Please do not use the strap to suspend the umbrella from your wrist. That would be waaaay too dorky. The umbrella also comes with a fabric cover which must be discarded the minute you receive the umbrella. I don’t know why, it’s just the law. This umbrella has a lifetime warranty. If damaged, you return it to Totes in Cincinnati and pay five dollars for handling. ... show more

  • Nice and looks solid
Color: Black
I have owned my share of cheap umbrellas. They are usually super light and come in handy in a pinch. But after the last one broke into pieces after it had been turned inside out a few times during windy conditions, I decided that it was time to invest on a better umbrella. Totes seems to have a good reputation so when I was offered the Blue Line umbrella, I had to try it. The umbrella feels definitely heavier and looks chunkier than any of my no-name brand umbrellas. The handle is made of wood; the pole, stretchers and the ribs are metal and they are coated so they won’t rust. When it is closed, the umbrella measures 12” and it’s 22” long when it’s opened. The canopy is 42” so it’s big enough to cover two people. This is an automatic umbrella so there’s a button in the handle to open it. However, you still have to close it manually by pulling down the runner. The runner slides down the pole smoothly. It was so well oiled that when I first opened and closed the umbrella, I had traces of oil in my hands. The material that makes the canopy of the Totes feels thicker than the ones in cheaper umbrellas. I haven’t tried this umbrella in a heavy downpour or in high wind conditions because the weather is not cooperating right now (I’ve used the Totes more as a parasol than as an umbrella so far), but I’m confident that it will keep me dry when the rain comes this winter. The umbrella comes with its own pouch for storing and there’s a thick loop at the handle to allow you to hang the umbrella if you need to. Though heavier than what I’m used to, I like the Totes umbrella because it looks solid and well-constructed. It has a good-sized canopy, yet the umbrella still fits in my bag. ... show more

  • A rugged umbrella that looks smart, too
Color: Black
This is a well-made, easy-to-operate umbrella. IN USE It snaps right open when you press the button, and it's not difficult to retract like the Oak Leaf umbrella that is one of the top-reviewed umbrellas on Amazon. My favorite feature is the water repellent coating, which prevents dripping when you go indoors. I give the Totes umbrella a little spin before closing it, and it sheds almost all of its water, so when I go inside, the umbrella doesn't drip. BUILD QUALITY The Totes compares well to my EuroSchirm trekking umbrella (another top-reviewed umbrella), though the EuroSchirm uses fiberglass ribs (which they claim are unbreakable) instead of metal. The EuroSchirm is also lighter (9.5 ounces vs. 13.8 ounces for the Totes). I think the EuroSchirm is the more rugged umbrella, but the Totes, with its wood handle, is "dressy" while still being strong. FEATURES It folds down to 12", pretty standard size for a folding umbrella. There are umbrellas that fold down much smaller, but they aren't as strong. It has a strap on the handle, which I always slip around my wrist to keep me from dropping the umbrella (oddly, the EuroSchirm has no strap). The water repellent coating (mentioned above) is great for preventing dripping when you go indoors. The lifetime WARRANTY is pretty good: If you ship the umbrella back and pay $5, Totes will replace it. So the replacement will cost you about half the price of a new umbrella. In all, this is a rugged umbrella that looks smart, too. ... show more
