This was purchased to do a heat loss analysis on an older home. It revealed that the home was basically not insulated at all. It showed us temps on the hot spots, it was within 2 degrees of a laser thermometer. There was an update to the iOS app and the data and temps are better and the resolution seems to be better after the June 2024 iOS update. This item is affordable, does exactly what it’s designed for at this price point. If you want SUPER res and pictures that are superb, well this wont help you. What this will do 1. Give you Temp Data you need for basic analysis. 2. Works well with electronics temp board failure components. 3. Great for heat or cold loss in HVAC. 4. This is what you need for basic info and good data.

Very impressive device, I could see deer walking 200 feet away in a no light completely black night. this can be used to check heat leaking from the house or building. My only complaint is the need to use a cable to connect to the Iphone when using a cell phone case. Very impressive for the price.

Does the TC002 IR camera deserve five stars? Perhaps not. But then my previous camera was FLIR ONE EDGE PRO. It suffices to say that FLIR, for about close to three times the price was far from matching my expectations. And then there is TC002 from TOPDON (first time hearing that name). I plugged in the camera, and there it was. Much higher refresh rate with higher resolution. The site claims TC002 is HD. Well, that's very far from an actual HD resolution, but for such a small IR camera, it is still far-far better than what FLIR offers! That's it. Last night, I watched the paw trail my cat left while going toward her water bow. It was eerie and downright scary what this toy could do. And yes, the cat left enough warmth on the wooden floor for the sensor to pick up a distinct paw trail... This thing put a smile on my face!!! I should have taken a picture, but I was in awe to even think about it then. TC002 pros compared to FLIR ONE EDGE PRO: 1. Improved resolution 2. Way faster refresh rate - putting the center of the FLIR camera on top of the object to get a temperature reading was torture. The refresh was that sloooooow. With the TC002, it feels natural, practically instantaneous. 3. Better software - easier to connect and work with and with more options. 4. FLIR communicates through WIFI. The initialization takes 15 seconds... Annoyingly slow and additionally blocks the WIFI on the phone while connected. 5. TC002 arrives with a robust case to carry the camera. You can buy a case for FLIR for an additional $30, and most of the carriers don't have it in stock!!! 6. You don't need to charge TC002 or worry that the battery might go bad. It takes energy from the phone. TC002 cons compared to FLIR ONE EDGE PRO: 1. The temperature numbers are often lost (practically invisible) because they have the same color as the high-temperature object behind them on the camera view. 2. The contrast on average temperature objects seems to be slightly better on FLIR. The issue feels minor. The TC002 feels more sensitive than the FLIR, which might explain the contrast issue. Also, FLIR has a second camera in the visible spectrum, which helps contour the actual objects. 3. FLIR has a second camera. As good as TC002 is, it cannot match that feature. 4. FLIR can be put in an inconvenient place without the need for a cable connecting it to the phone. General cons: 1. Occasionally, there is a moment of hanging while calibrating. Both cameras have this issue, but it is far worse with FLIR (slow again). 2. When rotating the camera, there are some lines appearing on the screen. Both cameras have the issue, but it is more pronounced with TC002. Regarding accuracy, I got the same readings from both cameras +-0.1 degrees Celsius. I did not test it extensively, though, just heat from my CPU. Conclusion: FLIR seems to be built by a corporate. In the sense that the camera should have those features, so here they are. It does not matter if it is annoying. It will get the job done. TC002, on the other hand, seems to be built by a passionate hacker. In the sense of let us have fun and see how far we can get.

I have to say first that this is the coolest new tool/toy I’ve bought myself in more than a decade. The image quality on day one was terrible because I had no idea what I was doing or how to fully use the app, as there is no manual that I could find. I have since improved the image quality, but only after extensive research into how to use thermal cameras in general and learning through much trial and error which settings to manipulate. The importance of understanding the environment can not be emphasized enough. That, plus a lot of other factors can lead to the same image quality as my first day versus now. That said, I have been able to map the entirety of my house’s plumbing and electrical systems with very decent accuracy. The mystery of stud placement in my 45 year old home is no longer a guessing game. The HVAC system has been fully mapped and insulation issues have been confirmed and repaired. My favorite, and subsequently most terrifying, find with this unit is the extent to which the parade of hapless handymen and homeowners who believed they knew their way around an electrical system went. As it happens, the kitchen circuit was being shared by 4 (FOUR) other circuits around the house. Now I know why my panini maker was never able to run for more than a few seconds on an otherwise empty circuit. I found it by noticing a very bright line in my ceiling that turned out to be a severely overloaded wire that was likely to burn my house down. It took me most of that afternoon to trace and rewire everything back from the brink of doom. Hanging a tv on an open interior wall should not take more than a minute or two to locate the studs and set anchors. In our house, the builder opted for the “Who’s gonna know?” approach of shorting us several studs within the wall. I broke out my little buddy, located the studs that should have been equally spaced, and saved myself a bit more of my sanity. Tv looks great by the way. On to the mystery of the warm section of my slab foundation when we run our dishwasher. The plumbing is supposed to run through the wall and out immediately, according to the plumber we consulted. NOPE! The bright line of our drain AND hot water supply line run the length of our dining room before turning and continuing through the slab to our bedroom before going outside. The supply line then loops back through the yard beside the house in the most unpredictable twist of logic before going all the way back to the hot hater heater a mere ten feet from our kitchen. This bad boy travels the length of the house twice! Now we know why our showers are never really hot. If you have an older home with decades of mystery workers putting their skills to work, this little guy is a great tool to help unravel some of the strangest things you might not expect to find.

I work at a transfer station and carry this in my pack at work for spotting hot spots and the source of trailer fires when they happen. Super fast and easy to set up. It’s plug n play and I’m ready to go—monitoring temperatures visually within seconds—using the app/interface on my iPhone! At home I use it for my insulation projects and it even comes in handy for helping to find our cat that likes to hide.
