  • Clearly little people designed this coop!
Size: 19.6' L x 9.8' W x 6.5' H
First and foremost, the overall result is a useable and a somewhat nice coop. But...there's always a 'but', be absolutely sure to put any other interior houses or large items over 23" wide inside before erecting this coop over them. The door is 24" wide. Add the chicken wire which will not be entirely flush, and it will be a real challenge to move anything that's 2' wide inside. Also, consider the fact that the tallest point inside is directly down the middle. The sides are only 3' tall. So for those men out there like my husband who hates 'Doll houses' as he calls them, this would not be a good option. I'm 5'5" tall, and the door barely permits me to walk through, so when the husband whacked his head I knew he was not going to volunteer to feed or water my chickens for me. Some other somewhat annoying features were the crooked long bars down the center top, two poorly shaped "L" joints for attaching the roof to the sides, and the less than level bottom 'feet' where several ended up not even touching soil. Yes, they include securing anchors, but in our sandy loam such lightweight aids are useless. We ended up hammering in steel fencing posts and wiring the 3 non-contact feet to the posts to keep them on the ground. Our biggest gripe was about the poor quality zip ties included. It seemed that half of them were non-functional with the center tab breaking off. It's no wonder they included so many. And in order to salvage enough to finish the project, we used 'J' clamps (like what you use for hardware cloth when making cages) to connect large sections of the chicken wire including the roof wiring overhead. It was a great concept and made the entire unit look so much nicer. Though flimsy, we attached one side of the unit to an adjoining steel fence. Once it was completely put together, hubby and I were able to lift the entire unit and move it. The chicken wire is not 100% galvanized, nor heavy. It was a very lightweight, coated version, though we loved it for that reason as application was truly a breeze. Be prepared to take two days to put this together. We are ranchers and homesteaders with lots of livestock, so we do a lot of hands on building projects, yet this unit required a lot of time as we did not want to provide any gaps for predators or have it look too unsightly. The gate construction is a booger and not strong enough to remain straight due to the simple box design, but it's still useable and decent. We are going to add a shade cloth cover over the top as the small portion that is tarped simply isn't adequate for our toasty AZ summers. There is no question that the lightweight chicken wire will absolutely cave-in or break if anything over 50 pounds attempted to climb on the top surface, like a mountain lion or bobcat, which we have in ample supply here. So only time will tell if our newest 12 week old chickens will remain safe inside or not. The ranch dog will definitely let us know if a badger or skunks attempt to get inside, and that, too, will let us know just how reliable the wiring is (or is not). We have another huge 30' by 40' chicken coop constructed from chain link (dog kennel kits) and so far in 5 years we have only had one skunk incidence where we lost about 7 chickens. But chain link provides very wide openings, which is why we opted for the chicken wire this time around with our newest chickens. This would be a great backyard city chicken enclosure, but for out here in the wilderness, only time will tell. ... show more

  • A little Short Sided
Size: 13.1’L x 9.8’W x 6.5’H
Assembly of the frame is easy for the most part, with the exception of the door. (More later) I don't know why, but I expected the sides to be a little taller. In reality they are about 3 foot tall, the height of the roll of net. The net/mesh is somewhat difficult to attach and keep straight. As I started, I pulled it too thigh trying to make it stretch to the size of the end. Rolling it out and over the top in 6 sections was a little difficult to manage. I found that if I laid the roll on one side and worked up and over the top it was easier (little trick I used). I used almost every zip tie that is provided. Cutting the edges of the mesh is important as to not catch yourself, a chicken or the tarp that covers the top, try to find a pattern and cut accordingly. The door assembly was not well described in the documentation. There could have been clearer guidance on spacing on the top and bottom, maybe even some guide holes would be nice. Having to determine best placement of the bars and then drill the holes needed is not best indicated. Had I not already drilled the holes, I would have gone back and changed the locations after the fact once I saw it installed. Over all, this is a fairly safe place for new chicks that aren't quite ready to free range, but it is definitely not predator proof. I would recommend keeping an eye on them or put it in a safe area. ... show more

  • Great for keeping birds safe.
Size: 13.1’L x 9.8’W x 6.5’H
This large metal bird coop was easy to set up and is reasonably sturdy. We bought it to protect our birds from hawks. Zip ties come included and will work for some time. We used thin solid (non-braded) steel wire/safety wire. It is usually located in the picture hanging hardware section of the hardware store. It comes in a small spool and both ends will twist tight with pliers or more easily with safety wire pliers after being wrapped around the frame and through the chicken wire. If you buy it online it could be called safety wire or safety lock wire. For those that are not familiar with predatory animals or need more security continue to read further: We ran the thin steel wire/safety wire through each overlapping seam of chicken wire on the "roof" of the structure. This will help keep hawks from getting in through the top. This is as far as we went and no hawks have made it in since we've installed it. If you want to help keep predatory animals out that may come in from the bottom we would suggest securing the chicken wire every two inches or so to the base of the frame and secure the frame with heavy duty stakes, weights, or even cementing all four corners in the ground if keeping this in a permanent place. This would help so animals can't come through between the base of the frame and the wire, or lift the bottom of the frame off the ground. Though labor intensive, some may even need to dig a foot or two in the ground around the whole base of the frame and place chicken wire to help keep any animals from digging underneath. If after all of this and you still have predators getting in, you have much bigger problems. You may have to follow the same concept as described above but use a heavy duty extra large chain link dog run/cage and then place chicken wire over the chain link. You may even need to run chain link or cement a few feet down underground around the whole base of the frame. If after all this and you still have them getting in you could give up lol....but I wouldn't. Just consider it a personal challenge and find a way to solve the problem. As another option think about doing detailed research on LGDs (livestock guardian dogs) who were "imprinted" and raised specifically to guard birds or whatever you are keeping in the coop or outside of the coop. Not all LGDs will guard birds. Some LGDs are good with young children, some are not. It depends on the LGDs parents/lineage, how they were raised, what they were raised for, etc. LGDs are not a simple house dog and probably aren't going to fetch. They will take a lot of training and need a thorough understanding from the owner before getting one. It will take much more than just a simple search on a website or single video watched. If you decide to get one, and are completely aware of what it takes to raise one, a properly trained and good LGD at a minimum will warn of all intruders. We wish you the best! ... show more

  • Easy to put together
Size: 13.1’L x 9.8’W x 6.5’H
It has been easy to put together even my 8 and 6 year old helped. We were missing both part I'm which holds the door to the frame which is a bit frustrating. Size is what it says it is.
