  • Makes wood chopping easier
I have used this product once. It did a pretty good job of making wood chopping easier for me. I thought the blade of the product should have been sharper when I received it. I have since sharpened the blade myself. I am looking forward to trying it out next week to see how much better it works.

  • Great quality!
It shipped and delivered on time. Each item quality looks really good. The most important thing was actually hammer and splitter quality for me because I use them a lot for hard work. I bought one from other company and the splitter broke off. This one looks better quality.

  • Medium Log-Splitter
These kindling splitters seem to be showing up more and more. Bottom line: they're budget-priced Chinese knock-off's of the New Zealand "Kindling Cracker." I now own two, of different sizes. They do get the job done. This one (the smaller but higher-quality of my two) is solidly built, made of decently-cast iron, with a high-carbon steel splitting wedge. (The splitting "blade" is a dull wedge, rather than a sharpened axe, which works fine.) These splitters have two issues: 1. Staying upright. It's very prone to tipping over. That problem can be alleviated by bolting it down to something solid, like a deck or very large flat stump. 2. Splitting the proper diameter log. Each splitter works best within a narrow range of log thickness. That's why I own two. Too small, and the log just flops around inside the retention ring. Too thick, and—even though it initially fits through the ring and begins to split—the log will quickly expand enough to jam itself in place. Do not try to force it through. You'll need to back that log out, and start again with something smaller. Bottom line: there needs to be enough clearance between the log and the support ring for the log's diameter to expand as it splits. I wouldn't try anything larger than 5.5" diameter. This set came with a pair of low-quality gloves and safety glasses. Use your own instead. It also included a 5.5-pound short sledge hammer. This works OK, and is probably about the right size and weight for the smaller logs this splitter can handle. ... show more

  • Good for making kindling
This wood-splitting device stands 1 foot tall and will accommodate a log that is about 6” in diameter. It comes with a mid-sized sledgehammer (about twice the size of a standard hammer), a pair of safety glasses in a case and gloves. So, how well does it work? Here are a few notes. First of all, it’s not very tall, so if you plan to split a lot of wood and don’t want to destroy your back, I recommend mounting it on something a few feet off the ground, perhaps a stump, and nailing or screwing it in place so it doesn’t move around (there are two holes in the base for positioning). Second, a log that’s 6” in diameter is not very large - this is going to make medium-sized kindling, as the manufacturer suggests. Third, to get a piece of wood started in the wedge - which sits about 3” below the iron circle at the top - you really have to hold it in place while you give the top of the log a few whacks with the sledgehammer. Once the wedge penetrates the log and the wood has started to crack, you can let go and swing away with both hands. You must also make sure your wood has aged long enough to make it splittable - green wood will not work. Finally, splitting wood is hard work — but you already knew that! This is surely safer than the alternative. Prepare to get a workout. ... show more

  • Free Hammer, Smaller inside diameter
This is a good unit for smaller kindling. I have another unit with a slightly larger inside diameter and both units compare similarly. Solid cast iron construction. I do like that this one came with a free 4 lbs hand held sledge hammer. The gloves are surprisingly pretty good too but I don't use them. The glasses came with a rigid case as well. Over all good buy. ... show more

  • Straight forward, works well.
Our cord of wood was running low on kindling, and this being the first time we've had a house with such a large wood supply, I was debating on buying an axe. I wasn't looking forward to swinging a heavy tool around, though, so I was intrigued when I saw this pop up on Amazon. I'm not sure the included safety glasses and gloves are necessary, since most people who need to cut a good amount of kindling probably already have these items, or would otherwise invest in a better quality set. I understand the glasses as basic safety, but prefer items to not come with things that may commonly become waste. The two main items: The mallet and the splitter, both seem of good quality. I bolted the splitter into a large stump using the appropriate holes. Note that bolts are not included, but I think it would be difficult to use this without bolting it into a fixed surface. Made pretty quick work of turning a 1/8 split log into various size pieces of kindling. It can be a little awkward when splitting many pieces as the log gets smaller, but you could just take kindling off larger pieces if that was easier. It was still easy enough to work from smaller pieces for me. Seems like a good purchase if you need both the splitter and the mallet. ... show more

  • Not really heavy duty, but works well
This is good for splitting small logs or firewood pieces into kindling. The mallet that comes with it is great. The gloves and eye protection are so-so, but most people probably have their own anyway. The only problem with the splitter is that it really needs to be connected to something on the ground or else it's difficult to use. But there are holes in the bottom of the frame, so you can screw it down. ... show more
