Description

Rush Hour is one of ThinkFun's most popular stem toys for boys and girls, and has been an internationally bestselling brain teaser puzzle for over 20 years, with over 10 million units sold worldwide. It's a fun traffic jam logic game that comes with 40 challenges of increasing difficulty, from beginner to expert, and makes a great birthday or holiday present for kids who like smart games and challenging activities. Rush Hour is made with high quality components, and comes with a very clear and easy to understand instruction manual - you'll be able to play within minutes of opening the box. Like all of ThinkFun's games, Rush Hour is built to develop critical thinking skills. Playing through the increasingly difficult challenges will improve logical reasoning and critical thinking skills, all through fun gameplay. Honk! Honk! It's gridlock and the little red car can't move. The player is a traffic cop in the Rush Hour Traffic Jam Puzzle where the objective is to get the red car off the road. To play, pick one of 40 challenge cards; solutions are printed on the back of each card. Then set up the cars and buses in a specified pattern on the 6-inch-square road grid. Move the vehicles one by one (obey those traffic laws!) until the red car can escape the traffic jam. There are four levels of difficulty. Kids can alternate turns with another player or just "play in traffic" alone. The game from Binary Arts received a national award from Mensa and is used in elementary school math classes. The design includes clear instructions printed on the sturdy box, which can be used both as a playing tray and for storage. The game cards stow away in a drawer in the road grid. This is a 1999 Parents' Choice recommended toy. --Marcie Bovetz

  • Great thinking and problem solving game
Style: Rush Hour
My students love this game. I’m an occupational therapist and work with kids in preschool through fifth grade. My 3-5th graders love this game. I love it because it really works on their problem solving and frustration tolerance.

  • This is No Old-Fashioned Slide Puzzle
Style: Rush Hour
I teach 7th and 8th grade, and am always on the lookout for interesting logic puzzle games for my students to try if they finish work early or if we have some free time, or at homeroom or lunch. Rush Hour fits the bill perfectly. This game has been highly-regarded by educational companies because it teaches kids spatial reasoning, and I can see why. I generally have to think several steps ahead, visualizing "to move the orange car down, I have to move the grey car to the right, but to do that I have to move the blue car up," etc. I'll have to hold all those maneuvers in my head before I can trace back to the one move that I actually CAN currently make. The sense of accomplishment when you finally solve a puzzle feels great. Even the medium puzzles are relatively challenging, taking me five to ten minutes or more of moving and shifting pieces to figure out how to solve the puzzle. The Hard and Expert puzzles, however, are no joke. Some are mind-benders, guaranteed to be good puzzles for an evening at home and absolutely a brilliant challenge for even the most astute student minds. With 40 puzzle cards in the box, it will take a while before you finish, and even once you do, good luck trying to remember how you solved that puzzle two weeks ago! It is a challenge all over again. This is no old-fashioned slide-puzzle with the one piece missing and you have to try to complete the picture. It takes a relatively simple concept (slide the red car on its single track out the space on the right side of the board) and challenges you in a way that can drive you loopy with curiosity. Since each car is on a single track and can slide either horizontally or vertically, it provides you a straightforward framework for manipulating the pieces, if only you can figure out the right order... ... show more

  • Terrific game for young and old
Style: Rush Hour
We have owned this game for almost 20 years. We first got it when our kids were in elementary school and recently purchased it again as a gift for our 5 year old niece. It is challenging at a variety of levels. What is great is it can be played solitarily or with help from multiple people. The cards increase in level of complication which makes it fun and interesting to see how you progress through the puzzles. An all time favorite puzzler. Item came quickly and in great condition. Highly recommend Rush Hour for all ages. ... show more

  • Fun, giftable, challenging (but not too challenging) logic puzzle great for recommended age range.
Style: Rush Hour
This game is a little addictive! It’s like a game on your phone but screen-free. There are 40 cards that tell you how to set up the logic puzzle in different ways using plastic cars on a “parking lot” grid. The cars move forward or backward only, and you goal is always the same: to get the red car out of the lot. The 40 cards are in order of increasing difficulty so it’s like a game with 40 levels to master. The solutions are on the back of each card but my family has never needed to use them. The cards fit in a handy little drawer in the parking lot game board. I just wish the plastic cars fit in a compartment somewhere too! The game does include a small drawstring bag to store pieces in, but this isn’t a great solution because the little cars can fall out of the bag’s opening pretty easily. Also, the board doesn’t fit in the bag with them so it’s not a great design—I wish it could all be contained in one thing. I have seen a travel case for the game for sale on Amazon, but 1) I don’t really want to spend the money and 2) I don’t think it’s a great idea to travel with this game because if you lose one car, the whole set is basically useless. When I travel with kids we bring Plus-Plus building pieces because they are all the same so it’s not a big deal if you lose a couple. So I would rate this game as 5 stars for being a fun, giftable, moderately challenging logic puzzle that is great for the recommended ages but Amazon asked me to rate on travel ability so I will say 4 stars overall ... show more

  • 5 Stars but qualifying
Style: Rush Hour
This is not a game for all kids. I bought it and tried it out myself to see if my grandson who was going to be 9 would like. After trying it, I knew it would not be for him. He would not have enjoyed the necessity to analyze and come up with the appropriate solution without getting frustrated. However I have other grandchildren and immediately knew which one of my grandchildren (she will be 9 in June) would not only love the challenge but enjoy the analytical aspect of this game. I also saw the aspect of other's being pulled into the game by making suggestions. I give this a 5 star rating but consider the personality and interests of the child. This will be a very beneficial game for some kids but could also turn another kid off completely if they got frustrated. The nice part of this game is the beginner to advanced levels of play. The size of the game and nice bag for the small parts and best of all, when all else fails a step by step guide to the correct solution is on the back off each card. As an adult of the same type as my granddaughter, I found it challenging and captivating. A game you could walk away from and come back to later for a fresh take and hopefully a solve. Fun Fun Fun for the right kid. ... show more

  • Best Board Game / Puzzle
Style: Rush Hour
Best time killer. Pros: - Addictive - Fun and enjoyable for all ages - Challenging really gets your brain engaged - Great quality - Comes with a pouch so that you don't loose the game pieces - Compact and the cards can be stowed away in a sliding compartment on the side of the board Cons: - There are none :) Overall: I would highly recommend it as a gift for children and elderly people. It's truly fun and challenging. The goal of the game is to get the red car out of the traffic jam. You achieve this goal by moving the trucks and cars that are blocking the red car's path. With that said, the game comes with four sets of card difficulties (Easy, Intermediate, Advance, and Expert). If you can't solve the puzzle the answers on how to solve it is on the back of the cards. The game pieces and board are made out of solid plastic yet they're light and durable. Best of all, it comes with a mesh pouch to prevent you from loosing your game pieces. Simply, it's a great classic board game and makes a good gift for any age. ... show more
