So I was quite disappointed at first because I couldn’t seem to keep the flame lit, it would start up and quickly fizzle out, assuming it was faulty I was quite upset the first night attempting to use it. A couple days later with a clearer head it occurred to me that it’s a “flame” and flames need oxygen, and I’ve been trying to use it with the lid on. So I kept the lid off and it started working without any problems. Unfortunately nothing in the directions mentions the lid, and the picture on amazon doesn’t show the lid, which is probably where most people’s bad reviews are coming from. So keep the lid off unless storing it somewhere and enjoy!

First time this worked great. The pads are supposed to be good for 4 hours so after an hour I turned it off and turned it back on the next day for another hour. Had a rainy spell so several days passed before I turned it on again. NOTHING. Swarms of mosquitoes still there. Put in a new pad and it worked. So the "4 hour pads" are not a cumulative 4 hours of multiple sessions. Once the pad dries out you need to replace it with a new one. It is sold in a sealed foil pouch so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that it will dry out and probably not work but the product description saying it is a 4 hour protection should be more clear on that point. If you tend to have long gatherings and will go through the better part of a repellent pad in one session, this is great and I would say 5 stars, at least here in Maine. Just be aware that if you have multiple shorter sessions you will be buying more replacement pads. Also the matched sets of replacement pads and butane will become mismatched and you will end up with a surplus of the butane cartridges because the butane is only consumed when burning.

Pro: once it gets going, definitely keeps the mosquitos away, very effective Con: replacing the filters and fuel can get a little expensive Pro: the filters last 4 hours and fuel lasts 12 hours so you don’t have to replace them that often. Great for porch sitting and camping Con: you either have to keep the device upright or remove the fuel tank each time in order to carry it somewhere else. Overall, great device. Has a bit of a weird smell when the filter is burning but it’s better than deet and citronella especially those who are sensitive to smell.

What an improvement over my old candle heated mosquito device. On windy days we could hardly get them lit. The trick to turning these on it to turn to the “ON” position and let the gas prime the device for several seconds before you click it over to “START.” I removed one star for 2 reasons. (1)... Using the lid as a base is annoying if you move the unit because it doesn’t actually attach to the bottom of the unit. Why not make it screw on the bottom so you don’t have to move it as 2 pieces? (2)... If you move the unit be aware that the blue pad can easily slide out. I found this out the hard way when I moved it and the pad slid out and into the pool, ruining the pad.

I had zero expectations for this product. You see, mosquitoes love me. They will fly past everyone on the planet to get to me. Went horseback riding once, covered head to toe, pants tucked in socks, shirt in pants, covered 3X in repellent. 12 bites. Rest of the fam-0. Today it was hot, humid & steamy. Turned thermacell on, planted myself on the deck & 1 determined mosquito got about 5’ from me then took off. That’s it. Mosquito free in Jersey in a backyard in the woods surrounded by trees & grass. Bonus-no nasty citronella scent.

I bought this for a 3 night camping trip. Mosquitos love me so I am always looking for ways to avoid being bitten when I'm camping. This worked great. However, I am giving it 4 stars because the fuel ran out much quicker than 12 hours. It was out of fuel half way through the second cartridge and definitely not 12 hours in. It may have gotten 8-9 hours over the first 2 days of camping but by the third, we had to switch to other methods. Still a great product but a little disappointed the fuel ended so soon.

I was absolutely skeptical about this product because I get eaten alive no matter what I do I could bathe in citronella and they'd still find a way ! UNTIL.. I used this little miracle made from the gods! Lol I can tell you, i have never enjoyed a summer with my kids like i was able to this year! I kid you not since i turned this little magical red smoker on i have NOT been assaulted once! Now I'm not going to say I haven't gotten bit at all while using it. I went from 20+ bites to 4 or less! I recommend this product to those who cant enjoy the outdoors with family and friends or even just themselves because they get attacked.

When we felt like we couldn't enjoy our patio of our new house because of the mosquitos, this thing saved us. It works great- my only complaint is that if you lose track of the time since you put the last pad on, you won't know when it runs out besides mosquitos starting to return. The pad does turn white when it has "run out" of repellent, but if you are having a BBQ or something you might not notice. And there is no way to tell how much fuel there is left. Perhaps a little timer or something could be added?
