Winner of the 2021 Independent Press Awards in the category of Death & Dying Winner of the 2021 Independent Press Awards in the category of Grief Next Generation Indie Book Award Finalist in 2020 Books on grief often fall into two categories: memoir or science. In The Only Way Out is Through, Dr. Gail Gross combines the two in an inspiring story of loss alongside the analytical psychology that helped her find her own re-entry into life. The Only Way Out is Throughtells the story of a mother's sudden loss of a child and the impact on the family as a whole. It offers a comprehensive approach to healing for the bereaved and helps them reenter life on new terms. The Only Way Out is Through is not only a book about grieving, but a guide to successfully navigating transitions--the endings and beginnings of life. Dr. Gail helps readers learn to listen to their own inner voices, the deepest part of the unconscious, so that reorienting and reshaping the future seems possible. Offering strategies for dealing not just with profound grief, but with living beyond a devastating loss, she provides a map for those looking for guidance, comfort, care, and hope. Read more

  • Influential Writers
From Dr. Gross's mention of Leonard Cohen's lyrics, I was hooked. With each subsequent writer, Dr. Gross brings relevance to her personal story. W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues" is the most moving ode ever written to a loved one. By quoting the poem, Dr. Gross pulled me directly into her pain, which is important, because we must get into her pain before truly understanding how we get out and through. Brava for incorporating into her personal story such esteemed poets. ... show more

  • Best book on the subject I have read
I am in the unique and unfortunate position to need this book at this particular time. My child died unexpectedly in December. As a huge reader, I have read multiple books on the subject in the last 5 months. This is the best one I have read so far. Probably unfairly, but I feel like I don't want to read about this terrible subject by someone who hasn't lived it. You just can't understand the experience having just studied it. It is sincerely unfathomable. Gail Gross is also the survivor of the death of a child, so she intimately understands the magnitude of the experience. She is also a doctor and educator, so I believe her expertise in walking any grieving parent through the process of grieving for their child. Specifically, I liked several things about the book. I loved that she wove multiple faiths and cultural norms process for grief through the book. Even as someone who doesn't identify with a particular religion, I think it underscored the universality of the experience. She also talked a lot about different "great" psychiatrists (like Jung, Erickson, etc,) and their beliefs on the grieving process. Most important to me however, was her sort of step by step approach to work through your grief. She literally had one by one steps to help. When you are in a fog of grief, you do need it spelled out in simple terms. Do this today, then do this tomorrow. The balance of grief theory and practical tips to work through it are extremely valuable and useful. ... show more

  • A must read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the separation and explanation of all the different strategies interesting and eye opening for dealing with grief. I also appreciated the inclusion of the perspective of her son. This should definitely be on everyone’s to-read list even if you have not dealt with child loss grief but any grief. A lot of the strategies can apply to not only a death loss but maybe a loss of a friendship or meaningful relationship as well. ... show more

  • Not recommended for newly bereaved
While I respect and admire the author's honest and open sharing of her personal experience of loss as well as her stellar reputation as an expert in human behavior, this is not a book I would recommend to newly bereaved parents ~ primarily because of its heavily psychoanalytic flavor, which requires a level of concentration that is difficult if not impossible for those in the early days of grief to maintain. Her suggestions for coping seem aimed at a fairly sophisticated and highly educated audience. I'm especially dismayed at the author's willingness to perpetuate the myth that child loss destroys a marriage: "Believe it or not, 80% of all couples who suffer the death of a child end their marriage in divorce" (p. 64). In a 2006 study commissioned by The Compassionate Friends, parental divorce following the death of a child was found to be around 16% ~ findings consistent with an earlier study conducted by the group that showed equally low divorce rates among bereaved parents. I wouldn't wish this unspeakable loss on anyone, but bereaved parents deserve to know that the death of a child doesn't necessarily foretell the death of their marriage ~ and if they are willing to reach out for all the information, comfort and support available to them, it could even draw them closer. ... show more

  • Author has both the professional and personal credentials to address this topic
The Only Way Out is Through is a very helpful book about working through the grieving process. Dr. Gail Gross, a renowned psychologist, has all the professional credentials to write this book, but she also is a parent grieving the sudden death of her 24-year-old daughter. She offers ten practical strategies on working through the stages of grief. I like that at the end of each strategy she provides practical ways to take action in support of the strategy. Melding her professional knowledge with her personal understanding she imparts her wisdom in an easy to understand manner. Many thanks to NetGalley and Rowman & Littlefield Publishers for allowing me to read a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. Opinions expressed here are my own. ... show more
