I have a black down-filled North Face coat called the Mountaineer. I only remember that because I asked if I could climb mountains in it, and the salesman at the North Face store said "um, no" and then we both had a laugh. Fast forward 10 years. This is the same coat! I realized it when I received my Amazon purchase. This coat is extremely warm and well made. It has details on the side which make you look like you have a waist. I wear a size 12 in jeans and bought a Large and I can still wear a sweater underneath. For comparison, I also bought the Arctic Parka sold directly from North Face and returned it because it was not flattering at all. Regarding my old coat, which is virtually identical, I have gone skiing and sledding, shoveled snow, had snowball fights, waited at the bus stop, and just sat and felt cozy in my wonderful coat. Sorry if this sounds like a love letter to an article of clothing. Buy this coat! Its worth the price (and $100 less than what it was in the NF store.). It will last years and I hope you will share memories with it, for years to come. Side note: I bought the black coat and it is pictured with black fur, but mine came with brown fur

The set-in waistband gives this coat a slight A-line shape. So glad I didn’t have to choose between warmth and style. For reference, winter temps routinely get into the single digits in my neck of the woods and I’m comfortable in this coat. The fit is slightly close to the body so wearing a a super thick sweater would make it a little tight. I haven’t found that I’ve needed that, though (maybe a cashmere or merino wool layer underneath on the coldest days but if the temps are in the teens or above, you should be fine. I wear a 34H bra and the Large fits me fine. I don’t feel squished or constricted at all.

I really love this coat. It’s light and not bulky- perfect for travel. I also feel it would keep me comfortably warm and dry even in very cold weather. Unfortunately I am 5’2” and it’s just a few inches too long for my liking. The bottom of the coat hits just above my knees and cuts me in half visually. . The back is longer than the front so it looked too long also. I’m going to continue to search other coats in this brand because the quality is excellent and the price is worth it if it fit better.

I could not find much information online about this coat. I believe it is an early design of The North Face Arctic Parka. In my opinion, it is far superior to the current design. It has snaps instead of velcro and the fabric is better quality. The down bunches less than the current design and the fit is more flattering. I tested it against two other high performance coats. It was by far the warmest. I have not tested it at a temperature colder than 20 degrees, but I believe it would fare well. I was able to purchase it for $150 cheaper than The Arctic Parka and I believe it was a steal! I am 5’8 and wearing a size medium.

I’m so glad I trusted my gut and didn’t let the reviews about the hood or size stop me. I would’ve missed out on such an amazing coat. It has “The North Face” on both the front and back. Every time I wear it, I get compliments. I absolutely love it—it’s beautiful, warm, and makes Midwest weather so much more bearable.
