Weird things happen when the moon’s putting on a show. Like bringing your past to the forefront so you have to face your past… literally. The flashback narrative takes us back one year to the suffocating tension of wedding prep. From the jump, it’s clear Jamie was looking for an exit strategy. His family’s elitist conviction that Sybil "wasn't good enough" created a toxic environment, but as the layers of their behind-the-scenes life are peeled back, the irony becomes palpable. Frankly, it isn’t Sybil who lacks quality—it’s the family. And more pointedly, it’s Jamie. There is a visceral frustration in watching someone claim to love a partner while failing to offer even a shred of defense against familial cruelty. When Sybil suffers a meltdown just days before the wedding, the absolute silence from her fiancé speaks volumes. One would think a partner’s first instinct would be to check in, but Jamie’s absence is deafening. For my fellow readers who usually steer clear of the miscommunication trope, consider this your fair warning: it is a foundational theme here. However, I’d argue that in this case, the lack of communication isn't just a plot device—it’s a symptom of a much deeper, more systemic rot in the relationship. What made this a standout read for me was how the author handled that "symptom." Instead of letting the characters wallow in silence for the sake of drama, the character growth addresses these failures head-on. 🎧 The narration was well done. One year after her wedding gets nuked, Sybil heads to Hawaii with nothing but some non-refundable honeymoon vouchers, emotional damage, and a suitcase full of questionable decisions. She’s expecting spa days and umbrella drinks. Instead, her ex-fiancé Jamie shows up at the same resort with his suspiciously hot coworker. Which is already bad enough. But then, like some kind of romantic sitcom demon summoning, her other ex-fiancé Sebastian appears and volunteers to pretend to be her boyfriend to save face. Because that’s not complicated at all. Also lurking in the background? Liam, fiancé number one, whose absence still haunts the entire mess like an emotional jump scare. So yes, there are four rings. And yes, Sybil’s entire romantic history shows up on this trip like a pop quiz she definitely did not study for. This whole thing is second chance romance meets fake dating meets forced proximity wrapped in a tropical drink with far too many umbrellas. It’s awkward, it’s chaotic, and I inhaled it like a bag of salty snacks. You’ve got jealousy flare-ups, passive-aggressive poolside encounters, wildly timed flashbacks, and an entire resort staff slowly realizing they’re trapped inside the world’s weirdest love triangle. Or square. Honestly, I lost count. But here’s where it surprised me. Buried under the romcom chaos is actual emotional depth. We watch Sybil peel back layers she’s been running from for years: anxiety, fertility struggles, grief, that paralyzing fear of not being enough, of ruining everything before it starts. It’s messier and more honest than you expect from a vacation romcom, and it gives her arc real weight. She doesn’t just stumble into her happily ever after, she fights for it. Eventually. After... several more bad decisions. The best part? Her friends, known as the Core Four (now technically five), are still there in the background, hyping her up, calling her out, and generally being the emotional safety net that holds this whole friend-group universe together. Even though this is technically book two, I went in without reading the first one and had zero trouble falling right into the chaos. These are the kind of friendships that make you believe in long-distance emotional rescue missions. Now, do we get miscommunication? Absolutely. But weirdly, it works. It fits these characters and their baggage. Instead of screaming "just talk to each other" like a maniac, you actually get why they’re fumbling. There’s a lot of heart hiding behind their bad timing. I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Cherami Leigh, and she crushed it. Her voice carried Sybil’s spiraling inner monologue perfectly. The emotional swings, the humor, the complete unraveling at exactly the wrong moments... all of it landed. She also made the dialogue pop, keeping the multiple timelines and character shifts crystal clear without losing the vibe. Is it perfect? No. The pacing wobbles when Seb enters stage left wearing his chaotic agent of nonsense hat, and I wanted a little more Jamie-Sybil page time before the big finale. But it’s messy in a way that feels earned. Like life. Or at least like a really entertaining reality show I would absolutely binge. Tropical chaos, runaway brides, emotionally avoidant exes, suspiciously attractive resort staff, and a woman finally learning how to stop running and actually stay. This one landed at 3.5 stars for me. Thanks to Hachette Audio and NetGalley for the early chance to dive into the audiobook. ... show more
