  • A Real Eye-Opener
I became interested in Mr. McCaig's books after becoming thoroughly enamored by the Border Collie. When I speak of my captivation with this type of dog, let me say that it is this dog's intelligence and athletic ability that grabbed me. I had previously read Mr. McCaig's other books concerning these dogs, the novels, Nop's Trials and Nop's Hope, which I rank as two of the best fiction books ever, and then Eminent Dogs, Dangerous Men, which was quite interesting, as well. However, reading Dog Wars totally opened up my eyes on what is going on in the "Dog World." I have been active in trying to get the mass production of puppies (puppy mills) put to an end, trying to make people aware of the plight of the dogs destined to spending their entire lives in this situation. Now, I am learning that those who breed the purebred dogs for the conformation show rings, their intentions are questionable as well. What is the point of breeding an animal just for a certain appearance, at the same time, breeding out its intelligence, health, natural working instincts? The point is not the welfare or love of the breed, it's the love of money - stud fees and puppy sales - and that's the bottom line. Thank you, Mr. McCaig, for this truly eye-opening book. Maybe I'll meet you at a trial someday soon and get to shake your hand. ... show more

  • Great read
I have enjoyed all of Donald McCaig's books that I have read. I've never been a fan of the AKC, because of the standards they put to breeders. The AKC says they are not at fault for problems various breeds now have. The AKC says the breeders are responsible. Well the judges don't use dogs that don't go by their standards(AKC's standards). How can the AKC say they are not responsible ! Their standards have ruined so many breeds! This book gives you an inside view of what really goes on. It is so sad that people who are supposed to love dogs have not a clue. We need more people like Donald McCaig ,and Ethel Conrad and the USBCC and all Border Collie FANS. I wish there was something I could do. I have Aussie's and Border Collies. I've had Aussie's most of my life. I know first hand how the AKC has ruined the Aussie's. We've had major health problems with our last three Aussies. Sorry I'm going off on you, I loved this book! ... show more

  • A cautionary tale of how a monopoly may have ruined a great dog breed
I bought this book based on the subject matter and not realizing it was authored by the same person who wrote the excellent 'Nop's Trials'. McCaig is a good writer and knows his subject matter, which is handily proven in this excellent chronicle of how the Border Collie came to be recognized by the AKC against the wishes of the bulk of the breed faithful. McCaig weaves the history of BC's with snapshots of his own dogs and their experiences all the while relaying his own involvement in the AKC recognition story. We get a look into the history of the AKC as well and its inner workings. Though the book certainly has a bias I do not feel the depiction of the AKC or its staff is unrealistic or questionable. What is appalling is the organization's utter disregard for the purity of purpose of the Border Collie. At the conclusion of the book I still don't understand what, exactly, the AKC actually gets out of adding the breed to its roster? The story of the AKC and the BC is a cautionary tale for other working breeds. This is a fascinating but ultimately sad story of great dogs, politics, money and big egos. ... show more

  • Insightful Read
I've read a couple of McCaig's books because of my fascination for the Border Collie--I bought this on whim, curious about the battle between "useful" dogs and show dogs. Even for someone not involved directly in breeding or Border Collies--it was an eye opening perspective on the AKC and show breeding. I love the way McCaig intersperses short glimpses of his own dogs in action between the narrative of the battle with the AKC . . . I don't think this book would necessarily appeal to everyone, but it is impassioned and lively . . . Sometimes I grab a book off the nightstand when I'm having trouble sleeping, usually that does the trick, but I made the mistake of grabbing this one night and it kept me awake til dawn! ... show more

  • Thank goodness for Donald McCaig and all those standing up for this amazing breed.
As an owner of a working Border Collie, I must say that it would be a shame if the pure working instincts were bred out of these amazing dogs. Some of them are not the most beautiful, but good ones have been carefully selected and bred to work. Looks do not matter. These dogs need to work, or they quickly become neurotic, but the AKC doesn't take that into acccount, they are encourraging the breeding of beautiful idiots, who end up suffering in the end. Back yard breeders should be ashamed, as should the AKC, who perpetuates the ruination of many breeds that were bred for a specific task, not just to be beauty pagant contestants. ... show more

  • A fantastic book!
A truly wonderful book written by a fantastic author; I normally don't recommend books on Amazon.com, but this book is is really outstanding and I felt compelled to write a review. The books provides a lot of insight into the evolution of the border collie and its ongoing struggles with the American Kennel Club (AKC), and details how the author tried to keep the AKC from recognizing border collies in order to protect this unique breed. The book shows how the AKC really doesn't have the best interests of the dogs in mind. Highly recommended for anyone who's interested in border collies, or even dogs in general. I'm eager now to read more books by Donald McCaig. ... show more
