This is by far the best puppy training book I've found. It is well written, thorough, accurate, easy to understand and implement into raising your puppy. It covers everything for preparing to bring your puppy home, potty training, crate training, socialization, basic commands and so much more. I have searched for the right book for my puppy clients for a very long time, and they have all fallen short until now. I will be including a paperback copy of this book with every one of my puppies going forward. As a matter of fact, I just ordered 4 more copies to accompany puppies to their new homes in June. This book is amazing. I wish I had bought it BEFORE I brought my puppy home . It’s easy to understand. It’s all positive training building trust between you and your new fur baby . . I learned about a poisonous or toxic plant in my back yard that my puppy was chewing on and playing under . I was able to make plans to remove it for her safety! The list is long, but informative. I only knew of 3 things NOT TO FEED dogs. She has learned her Name , Come , off , down . Ive learned how to socialize her with other puppies and older dogs. Actually the older dogs will be tested this weekend. I WONT be able to limit the intro 10 to 20 min as I will be staying the night 7 hours from home . I have her pen to remove her from the situation if need be. This book talks about TRUST , illuminating growling when you fur baby growls. It’s an amazing book and a quick read. You can jump in anywhere or chapter when you need to. Buy This before you think about getting a puppy. It’s a commitment for sure ! I would suggest purchasing this book before Puppy comes home . I sure it is a good book. It was just too wordy for me. I just wanted a book to teach me how to train my dog... not the theory behind it.

    • My Favorite and Most Helpful Puppy Book

I bought 5 puppy books to help me get ready for our first-ever puppy. Now that we've had her home for a week, this is the one I find myself going back to, with the strategies that are working the best for our pup. Easy to read, take in the highlights, and apply in day-to-day use. It focuses on what you actually need to do, instead of stories and a lot of other extraneous information. Don't get me wrong, the extraneous information is great, so other books have their purpose. But if I want to focus on crate training today, or perhaps introduce "sit", I can find it easily here, and the instructions seem to be working for us. I like the positive/negative markers. The whole family can use them. One more comment, is that when I first read the suggestion for the "magic" crate, i.e. leaving treats when the pup isn't looking, I thought that was silly/stupid. But I was frustrated and used it and guess what? It works. My pup is always venturing into the crate looking for kibble treats. We certainly haven't mastered the crate yet, but this was a great strategy for getting her to start to like it! ... show more

This book is great! It covers all of the topics that you need to cover when first bringing a puppy home and does it in a very easy to read manner.
