Originally I was going to buy an off-brand version of these but decided against when I saw images of the sponges. The authentic Veken sponges are much bigger than the off-brand and fit snuggly into my pet fountain. I can't attest for my cat's feelings, but I think she likes the cleaner water taste with the sponge and new filter since she's been drinking more after replacing the filters. The sponge is not too difficult to install. Just make sure that you rinse the filter and sponge for a minute or two before installation to get out any unwanted taste and charcoal.

These work just as described. I have two cats (one long hair and one short). The little black sponge is one that can be reused for about a month (or longer depending on how many pets you have and how much time you want to spend picking the hairs out of it). I add some dental solution for cats into the water fountain to help my cats keep their teeth clean without me having to brush them and I have noticed that the white filter doesn't filter that out completely thankfully. In regards to the white filter, I run it under some cool water for about 15 seconds before adding it to my water fountain in order to limit the amount of charcoal that enters the drinking water. I clean the fountain every two weeks and I rinse off both filters (I have very hard water living in Florida so the white filter can get discolored). Depending on how dirty the white filter is I'll switch it then or after another two weeks (so around a month of use for both filter with cleaning in between).
