  • The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook Review: 700+ Recipes Perfectly Sized for Small Households
Format: Hardcover
# The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook Review: A Kitchen Workhorse for Small Households If you cook for two people on a regular basis, you have probably run into the same frustrating problem over and over again. Most recipes are designed to feed four, six, or even eight people. That often leaves you with a mountain of leftovers, wasted ingredients, and a sink full of dishes. *The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook, 10th Anniversary Gift Edition* from America's Test Kitchen solves that problem in a big way. At first glance, the sheer size of this cookbook is impressive. With more than 700 recipes covering everything from breakfasts and appetizers to main courses, desserts, breads, and side dishes, it feels less like a specialized cookbook and more like a complete culinary encyclopedia for small households. Whether you're a newlywed couple, empty nesters, roommates, or simply someone who prefers cooking smaller portions, this book delivers an incredible amount of value. One of the cookbook's greatest strengths is the recipe development process. America's Test Kitchen is known for its rigorous testing, and that attention to detail shows on every page. Rather than simply cutting larger recipes in half, the authors carefully rework each dish to ensure proper cooking times, ingredient ratios, and flavor balance. This is especially important for baked goods, casseroles, sauces, and other recipes where scaling down can be surprisingly tricky. The variety is outstanding. The cookbook includes classic comfort foods, international dishes, vegetarian options, seafood recipes, soups, salads, and desserts. The updated anniversary edition adds more than 200 new recipes, including air fryer favorites and additional plant-based meals. No matter what you're craving, there is a good chance you'll find it somewhere in these pages. Another feature worth highlighting is the practical advice scattered throughout the book. Equipment recommendations, grocery shopping tips, storage suggestions, and strategies for reducing food waste make this much more than a collection of recipes. The nutritional information provided for every recipe is also a welcome addition for health-conscious cooks. The photography is attractive without being excessive. There are enough photos to inspire and guide the reader while still allowing the book to devote most of its space to recipes and useful cooking information. The hardcover gift edition feels durable and substantial, making it a cookbook that can handle years of use in a busy kitchen. No cookbook is perfect. Some readers may find the book's size overwhelming, and beginners could spend considerable time browsing through the extensive recipe collection before deciding what to cook. Additionally, some recipes require specialty ingredients or equipment that casual cooks may not already own. However, these are minor drawbacks when compared to the cookbook's overall usefulness. ## Final Verdict *The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook* earns high marks for its incredible breadth, dependable recipe testing, and practical focus on small-scale cooking. It successfully eliminates the guesswork that often comes with adapting standard recipes for two people and provides enough variety to keep meals interesting for years. For couples, empty nesters, and anyone tired of eating leftovers for three days straight, this cookbook is an easy recommendation. It is one of the most comprehensive cooking-for-two resources available and deserves a permanent spot on the kitchen shelf. **Rating: 5 out of 5 stars** ### Pros * More than 700 recipes covering nearly every category * Thoroughly tested recipes that scale properly * Excellent variety of cuisines and cooking styles * Helpful shopping, equipment, and food-saving tips * Nutritional information included * Durable hardcover gift edition ### Cons * Large size can feel overwhelming at first * Some recipes require specialty ingredients * Not every recipe includes a photograph If you only buy one cookbook specifically designed for cooking for two, this may be the one to own. ... show more

  • Best Cookbook Ever!
Format: Paperback
This is, by far, the best cookbook I have ever read! And I’m in my 60s! I bought the paperback, which is large and heavy and will be easy to use. It has appealing dishes from classics to the types of dishes we get in restaurants. And beautiful pictures! The Test Kitchen authors made the recipes as simple and concise as possible to prepare. Since we have to eat and I have to cook to feed my husband and myself most every day, this cookbook helps me look forward to being inspired and “changing it up” for years to come! ... show more

  • Best cookbook I've ever owned!
Format: Hardcover
This cookbook has completely changed the way I cook! Not only is it filled with delectable recipes, it also has so many tips and helpful information about foods, preparing them, and cooking them. Each recipe begins with a small paragraph about the recipe and any substitutios that can be made, such as different types of hot peppers that can be used alternatively. There are also notes on any special prep technique required. Alternative variations are also included for some of the recipes. One of my favorites is a variation of another recipe that contains something I don't eat. I had been cooking the same tired old recipes I'd been making since I was 12, then I got sick of leftovers so I bought this book. I wish I had found it years ago, cutting my recipes down when it was just me & my son was such a hassle. Now we have all types of exotic food, Thai, Indian and Italian dishes I had never had before and they are all big hits in my home! Thank you America's Test Kitchen for the best cookbook I've ever owned! You will not be disappointed if you buy this amazing cookbook! ... show more

  • Need a microwave and an exercise program
Format: Hardcover
This would be the perfect cookbook except for the fact that not everyone has a microwave. My kitchen is small and I have choices to make. Microwave oven was the first thing jettisoned. When prepping they needed to give a non-microwave option. Otherwise this book replaces a lot of books. It has a recipe for every occasion. Be aware, the recipes are not heart healthy or calorie light. ... show more

This is a beautiful cookbook. I have only had time to make 1 recipe but it was delicious and everything you might expect from The American Test Kitchen. I have already identified several recipes I can’t wait to make. It is well worth the money.

  • The Gold Standard
Format: Hardcover
This cookbook is indeed the gold standard for "cooking for two." It is comprehensive and takes nothing for granted--it explains the simplest processes and recipes, while adding new twists. I also like that it includes many global recipes. My new favorite cookbook.

  • Great recipes...but more than enough for two.
Format: Hardcover
I have been a big fan of America's test kitchen for many years. My husband and I are older and we needed smaller meals . He also refuses to eat left overs so I really wanted recipes that would have just two portions . The recipes are delicious and well written, there is a section in the back with all the nutritional information on the recipes..BUT.. these recipes often have what I regard as larger portions and there are left overs. Meat portions are often 6- 8 ounces each, far too much for me. If that works for you , then these recipes may be perfect but most of them were too large for two people IMO. ... show more
