How to choose your Bathroom Fan? What is a sone rating? Sones, or the sone rating, is a term used to describe sound levels. Lower sone ratings are found on quieter fans. Higher sone ratings indicate a louder bathroom fan. What is CFM? CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) measures fan air movement. CFM increases as air movement increases. The exposed trim piece doesn’t fit too snugly into the housing but I like to put a bead of silicon around it anyway so all works well for me. SEE UPDATE BELOW: It's a bathroom fan. Is it quieter than the 30 year old original fan? Yes. Is it super-ultra quiet as advertised? Nah. Most aggravating: the clips that attach the fan cover will not snug the cover up to the ceiling no matter what. I went round and round with it. The picture above shows light shining around the outside frame - where the frame should be tight to the ceiling. That's a problem. UPDATE: Reconsidered my original review. 1) Apparently the lighted cover design provides for a small seam of light around the top where it snugs up against the ceiling. It drove me crazy at first thinking it should seal tightly, but it looks as if it's supposed to be that way. I actually kinda like the way it spreads the light against the ceiling. As always, make sure you seal around the fan housing once it's installed. 2) It actually fit perfectly into the old 7.5" x 7.25" opening. I did not have to go into the attic to install. 3) The fan was pretty quiet after installation; once the cover was in place the fan much quieter! Overall the unit seems very well made and durable. I needed two new fans to replace noisy builders grade that have been annoying us for 19 years. I almost paid twice as much for a name brand fan because it had a slightly lower noise rating but decided to give this one a try based on reviews. Good choice. Most of the replacement work was removal of the old fan including all the insulation that dropped down. This fan fit perfectly into the opening for the old fan so no cutting or enlargement was necessary. Along with these fans I did order a plastic 4" to 3" adapter that costs about $7, knowing that my old fan used a 3" exhaust duct as many homes built when ours was does. This company says attic access is not required for installation. The flanges that are designed to attach the fan to the joist can only be used if you are installing the fan from above. But, there is a groove around the bottom of the fan housing that makes it easy to drill a couple holes and attach the fan from below. If those holes had been pore-drilled, I would have given the installation 5 stars. That give you the additional advantage of placing whatever side of the fan housing that works best with your electrical and exhaust duct against the joist. All in all, a relatively easy job. And, the fan is super quiet. With the bathroom door closed, you cannot hear it at all. For the money, this fan can't be beat. ... show more

Nothing to complain. about. it works, good value and moves a lot of air silently. replaced my entire home with these fans. All the one star reviews are likely due to installation error. it's very evident the fan blades are rubbing against something.
