Description

TCL, one of the world's largest TV manufacturers in the world and America’s fastest growing TV brand, bring the latest in 4K technology and design. We've simplified the 4k Ultra HD TV so you can instantly enjoy endless entertainment. With HRD compatibility, choose from more than 4,000 streaming channels that feature 450,000 movies and TV episodes plus live sports, news, music, kids and family, food, science and tech, fitness, foreign language and so much more.Connecting any external source such as a fire stick or satellite box, bypasses most of the Roku functions, as you're simply going to one of the HDMI inputs on the TV. One cool feature if you're doing this, is that you can program the TV to, instead of turning on to the home screen, when you power it up, it will go directly to one of those sources if you wish. The digital optical audio output is one of three audio connections to get sound external sources. The others being HDMI ARC, and an analog audio output in the form of a 3.5 mm audio jack. • Digital Optical Output works perfectly
Size: 55 in Set: TV only
1) I owned a Sony TV Bravia Model KDL 46EX620, bought on 2012; I used the TV to display picture and sound coming from variety of input sources; For example from the over the air TV channels / stations such as over the air public channel KQED; over the air KBS Korean broadcast station to watch Korean drama with English sub title. I connected the standard digital optical output of the Sony TV to the digital optical input of my Yamaha receiver model RX-V373 which power the external speakers. The digital audio signal via optical output terminal is so standard that most modern TV provides such an output. the Sony TV further provides analog audio signal output via typical RCA connectors that I did not have to use because the standard digital optical output of the Sony TV provides good sounds for all of the over the air TV channels / stations. In other words, the Sony TV is able to convert whatever different digital audio formats associated with the sources / channels being broadcasted by the specific over the air stations / channels (i.e. varieties of Dolby formats and/or DTS formats.. from the sources) and converted down to basic stereo sound that can be received and decoded by any receiver that has an digital optical input. As the result, the sound of the Sony TV build in speaker is the same as the sound of the external speaker using the digital optical output. I also use the analog output of the TV (i.e. the RCA connectors) to connect to the Vocopro DA-200Pro Digital Key control Karaoke mixer (The digital key control is a very useful feature found in virtually all karaoke hardware and software players. It allows the key of the music to be adjusted up or down by small increments (steps) without affecting the tempo of the song) 2) I read a lot of reviews and decided to bought from Costco the Samsung 55" Samsung UN55NU8000FXZA The Samsung TV costs $900 quite expensive, it does have vibrant color as being reviewed. However I am very disappointed with the audio output of the Samsung TV. It does not provide the analog stereo output, therefore I could not use the Vocopro DA-200Pro Digital Key control directly. Moreover the Samsung TV have problems with converting the audio for over the air TV channels /stations when using the digital optical output. When using the digital optical output, at certain over the air channels the voice is muff fed so bad and only some background sound is heard; at certain over the air channels the voice is heard then when the commercial portion is broadcasted, the voice is muffed. At certain channel the volume / the sound is too loud comparing with the volume / the sound of other channel. Most of the over the air stations / channels have one or more of the above sound problems. None of these problems occurring when using the internal speakers. Samsung does not give a hard copy of the user manual when purchased the Samsung TV. When I downloaded the emanual / TV user manual from its web site. At page 36 of the user manual , it said "Digital Audio is only available with 5.1 channel broadcast". And this appears to acknowledge and confirm that Samsung TVs have optical audio problems; the Samsung TVs cannot convert down any digital formats (any varieties of Dolby formats and/or DTS formats and others digital audio formats being broadcasted) to a simple stereo format that any receivers can decoded and used for external speakers as I mentioned above; Other TV can do that. When I goggles "Samsung optical audio not working", it seems other Samsung customers having the same issues. Some Samsung customers suggested to set the Samsung TV digital optical output to PCM mode. I have tried that however it does not work. That is all of the over the air broadcasted stations / channels still having the same digital optical audio problems as discussed above. Some Samsung customers are frustrated because Samsung representatives tried to shift the blame as to customer's receiver problems instead of admitting it is the Samsung TV optical digital audio problem of not sending out the sound properly. More details of can be seen from this link or by goggle 'Samsung optical audio not working" https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/TVs/65-quot-Samsung-TV-s-Protocol-for-Its-Digital-Optical-Audio/m-p/242210/highlight/true#M26497 " ... Thank you for digging up that info. I don't understand what "Decoded from source" means, because it still does not indicate the output protocol, but only tells me that the TV is capable of interpreting the source. However, in my instance it provides the information I needed (I was getting PCM output). Unfortunately, it also means that the device I connected should have worked, but it did not—and a call to customer support demonstrated that Samsung is not capable of providing help to get it working. The guy I talked to seemed to not know what the word "protocol" means, and sure didn't know about "PCM," and did not offer to transfer my call to a more technical person (who probably wouldn't have been able to help either, since an engineer was probably needed). "" I refused to pay $900 for a TV with digital optical audio problems. 3) I bought many Sony TVs in the past because Sony TVs were well known for quality and reliability. However, I was disappointed with the reliability of the Sony TV Bravia Model KDL 46EX620 which lasted for only 8 years with average usage ( 5 hours per day). I returned the Samsung TV UN55NU8000FXZA at price $900 bought from Costco because the Samsung TV have problems of digital audio output for over the air TV channels / stations. I then bought the TLC Model 55S405 55" TV from Amazon prime for a price of $350. The color is slightly less vibrant than the Samsung TV UN55NU8000FXZA. However the TCL TV have the digital optical audio output that works perfectly. That is when the TCL TV audio is set to optical and PCM mode; And regardless different digital audio formats being broadcasted by the specific over the air TV channels / stations, it converted to basic stereo audio signal that any AV receiver with a standard digital optical input can process to the external speakers; In addition, the TCL TV has an earphone output (analog audio signal out) which I can connected to the Vocopro DA-200Pro Digital Key control Karaoke mixer for my Karaoke singing. With the price half of the expensive Samsung and Sony TV, and I also bought 4 years guarantee $15, the TCL TV is a value and better buy. The TCL TV have a lot of good reviews in Amazon prime. So far, I'm very happy with the TCL TV I wish my review / comparison of the TVs is seen in a positive way, so that manufacturers of the TVs such as Samsung & Sony can correct the deficiencies and/or problems of their respective products. • voice remote and accessibility for the blind
i think this is a good entry level 4 k tv. with the newest tcl firmware i got on july 23 2018 and dispite tcl telling me the s405 does not support the enhanced voice remote, this is not true. i have been useing the rf voice remote from my tcl s517 on my s405 tcl tv and the voice search does work with the rf remote. the problems i am haveing right now is not with the remote but bugs in the newest tcl firmware that was installed on july 23 2018. the voice search only works when onthe home screen. and this is with both the s405 and s517 tcl sets with the rf enhanced remote from the s517. once you go to tv mode i get the error voice search is not supported. we're still working on it. so far the interface has not crashed. it has options to set your picture and sound globally or for each channel if you wish. the same for the 3 hdmi ports. it has a usb 2 port but many usb devices require usb 3 to work. for blind users. pros. there are so many features i like. they have improved the on screen keyboard compared to the roku stick with voice remote i had. it is easier to under stand when it says brovo for the b key. etc. and voice does not skip over letters when arrowing through the keyboard. you have speech for all of the functions. all the menus talk.you can rename the hdmi ports, you can set it to go directly to those inputs when the tv is turned on. so it can go directly to the tv antenna, the roku home page, my fire stick , he cable box if it uses a hdmi input. etc. it speaks them when you change to them both in the roku and on my comcast remote control. once you get use to the tv remote you can open a talking tv guide with the left arrow key. all of this talks but you have to have the tv connected to the net to get the correct info. when on a station you can press the ok button to get the signal strength and the time frame, which is live over the air info and a description of what is playing. but you can not turn the channel sound off to hear this info. there is little delay when you turn the tv on. unlike my old l c d tv that takes 20 seconds before it starts working. you have speech to make changes to brightness, color, contrast etc. when changeing inputs. it has both wy fy and eithernet options for the built in roku and on line tv guide. both need this to function. *** cons. i had to turn off the screen saver. a few times it went into screen saver mode while i was watching a movie. for the audio output. it only has a fiber optic output. no digital coaxal output. luckily my vizio sound bar has the fiber optic input and i already had the cable i used for a apple tv box. i am finding that if the signal is below 60 percent the channel will break up. i have to turn off audio guide when watching weak stations because the station and movie descriptions will be announced over and over again, every time you lose the signal. you can hide the channels you don't want to watch. but its useing a graphical dot to indicate its hidden. but voice guide doesn't say anything when you hide a channel. it does not come with a voice remote and tcl says this tv does not have the hardware to use the enhanced voice roku remote. *** the roku. its so, so. there is no speech access to you tube or firefox browsers. so they can not be used at all. its a lot harder to search for movies without voice control. you have to type in everything. the mobile roku app is not accessible. it will turn off voice over on the iphone when you tap the mic button to voice search and it will not turn back on untill you close the app and reload. then voice over will turn back on. this is suppose to give you some voice controls on the i phone. but searches only show on the i phone. etc. when you tap on a item in the list then it activates the roku. the roku voice is losy and can not be changed. it is a mono tone female voice. the roku does not have a screen review mode like the amazon fire stick does. and the fire stick voice is a very pleseing female voice. there are many text screens it will not speak because there is no screen review mode. you need help when you have to activate the tv because again, no review mode. once the activation pin number has spoken you can not go back over it to get the number you need to enter on the computer on the roku web site. once it is activated on the computer it will give you a list of subscription tv services lick h b o, show time stars etc. then it will update the roku with your options and update the tv fermware. it is better to use the ethernet tv connection for this. i don't know if it would hose the tv if the download failed with wy fy. you turn voice over on by pressing the star (option button) four times. dureing the first setup. but with me it would not turn on. it would just bong. once i found the factory reset button to reset it voice over turned on. this is a pin hole next to the antenna connection. ... show more
