Pros: o Did the job I needed it to do Cons: o The two-piece screw-together shaft might give you some fun Would I recommend this to a friend: YES I wanted to set a piece of 1-5/8" metal post to mount our Starlink dishy. Also wanted to get down below the frost line, which is around 48" here... so, I had to dig a two foot deep hole large enough to fit the Ryobi 18V drill, then use this to get down past 48" (OK, I actually ended up 56" deep). I know how stony our ground is, so I was very skeptical that this auger would manage to do the job. Fortunately, I picked a spot where there are apparently no large rocks, and with patience and perseverance, the auger managed to bore the hole. I *did* get stuck on a couple of small rocks that stopped the auger, and when I put the drill in reverse, I *nearly* unscrewed the two halves of the shaft from one another... which would have left the lower half down in the hole. Granted, I could have dug it out if that had happened, but the whole (or should I say "hole") reason for getting this is so I could save myself some digging. I realized what was happening in time, and managed to pull on the shaft and get the entire auger out before it had completely unscrewed. Just be warned about that little "gotcha". So anyway, at the end of the day, I was very pleased with the fact that, even WITH the fairly challenging soil and stones, it DID get the job done, albeit a little bent and worse for wear (the auger, not me), but still usable. ... show more

I used this to plant a few dozen bulbs this fall. It made the job so much faster and easier. I hit a bunch of rocks and roots, and the tool never broke or bent. I wish the flats on the end (for the drill to grab on to) were a little better made. Sometimes, my drill chuck slips, and I have to re-align and re-tighten the bit. In PNW the soil is very hard and rocky. These made bulb planting much easier. I van barely break the soil don with a shovel on my hill slope and these augers made bulb planting very simple this year

    • Get what you pay for

I've used this once to drill about 35-40 holes for grass plugs. First, it worked and didn't break. It is fairly lightweight and thin, which at this length makes it wobbly. I kept thinking it could bend or break at any time if I had to put any pressure on it. The end that goes into the drill should be more definitively shaped for the drill to more positively clamp to the bit. Other than that it works and was inexpensive. For extensive use I'd pay double (or more) to get one that was higher quality and would snap into a drill driver. If you're going into good, fairly loose soil this will be entirely adequate. It would probably also be a good auger for beach use (occasional). ... show more
