Has worked very well for drilling holes for 2 1/8" circular finger-pulls for sliding closet doors. You want holes that don't go all the way through the door for these pulls but you also want a flat bottom on the hole. This is the perfect type of drill bit for this type of job. It will drill all the way through a door or other wood object, but if you want a blind hole with a nice flat "bottom" this drill will produce that also. Packaging has "Freud" in tiny letters and "Diablo" in much larger letters. Diablo is the actual manufacturer/distributor so it's a bit misleading to call it "Freud"... if you are cross-shopping, you may have seen the Diablo brand in a store but completely missed the tiny "Freud". We have made 12 holes for sliding door pulls so far and the bit is still very sharp and working as well as it did for the first hole. We have 12 more to drill and I have no doubt these will all be fine also. Have seen these selling for as much as $85 in b&m stores. ... show more

I needed to counterbore holes in closet doors to install some flush door pulls. The pulls measured 60mm. This bit was perfect for cutting those holes. I put some blue painters tape on the door before cutting the hole. The finished holes were cut cleanly with minimal effect using a power drill.

I have a set of Forstner bits from Freud not Diablo. I needed some spare 1/4 bits for a project in oak that needed to make quality round splinter free holes about 100 of them. I was surprised to get Diablo and almost returned them but then I saw they were actually a division of Freud. They did the job even though they had burrs on the cutting edges which I touched up with a diamond stone before using. The grind was a bit coarse and after 100 holes one got dull but still was making good holes. Even the original Freud was getting rolled cutting edges so I saw no difference in steel material used in the bits. Even the grind was the same on both, a bit coarse and unfinished. These are disposable bits, to small to resharpen so they are really throw away tools. They did the job but I can’t help but wonder if there was a better steel and a better grind they might last longer. While these got me through the job I will keep looking for a better quality tool. ... show more

I've started replacing bits from my Forstner set. The Freud / Diablo happened to be on sale and purchased the size I needed. I have to say I will continue replacing any in the future with this brand. Great design, penatrates quickly and prevents skipping. Good chip removal also. Even if they may be slightly more expensive they are well worth it. ... show more

I had an unconventional use for this 1 1/2" Forstner Drill Bit. I was installing a couple of LVL beams parallel to an existing beam in order to remove a column. To bolt all the beams together, I needed to recess the bolts past the sheet rock to the wood. Not sure what was going to be the best option, I bought a 1 1/2" drill bit, and 1 1/2" Spade bit, and this 1 1/2" Forstner bit. I am sure the drill bit can work but it isn't a clean hole as it starts with a considerable wobble before cutting, the spade bit works well but a challenge to keep it from taking too big of a bite in the soft sheet rock. The Freud not only worked the best for the task but the head thickness is the perfect size; it happened to be flush with the sheet rock surface at the same time it contacts the wood. I have no doubt the bit would bore straight through the wood based on the cutting; my use was simply different. ... show more
